24.01.2022 This copperhead was found in a dining room at 2:00am by the owner. They were obviously pleased to see it leave.

23.01.2022 Killing a snake is nothing to be proud of. The only good snake is a live snake.

22.01.2022 This is a Lowlands Copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) from Ballarat. They are the most commonly encountered snake around town. If you find a snake in your yard, its most likely this species. Although highly venomous, they are not aggressive and are reluctant to bite. They are primarily associated with creeks, swamps and watercourses. They mainly prey on frogs.

20.01.2022 An excellent poem by Alexander Dudley here. It gives an appreciation of the hardships faced by snakes, an Eastern Brown Snake in this instance. Pseudonaja textilis from Bingara area: Bronwyn Brown Bronwyn Brown is timid, and Bronwyn Brown is shy;... Bronwyn Brown is careful, she doesnt want to die. Bronwyn Brown is scaly, and Brownyn Brown is slender, Bronwyn Brown is hungry, with mice on her agenda. Bronwyn searches paddocks, around chook house and shed; shes a nervous tube of vitals, with venom in her head. As Bronwyn is a Brown Snake, and too many people say: "The only good snakes a dead one" and that isnt okay, as Bronwyn isnt dangerous, unless shes under threat, and far more folks are killed on farms by guns and cigarettes. Her venoms much too slow to win advantage in a fight, shell fear for her survival before shell ever bite. But shell protect her body, with her stance and open gape, which warns her foe to back away, so Bronwyn can escape. If Bronwyns really threatened, she may rear up to strike, and her salmon-spotted belly warns youd better take a hike, as once theres space between you, she will drop and slink away, and hopefully the two of you will live another day. Theres far more snakes about the place than folks will ever see, they all play important roles in the ecology; Killing snakes does nothing, just reinforces fear, and Brown Snakes arent as dangerous as guys with guns and beer. Alexander Dudley 2016 Here is a photograph of an Eastern Brown Snake from Victoria.

20.01.2022 This lowlands copperhead was trapped in bird netting in a veggie garden for two days. It was then relocated two kilometres away near a creek

19.01.2022 Snake release. This snake was tangled in bird netting (same snake from last post).

19.01.2022 This is a large male Red-bellied Black Snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus) from the Grampians region. They are commonly found around moist areas such as swamps, riverbanks or closed forests. They are active by day and prey mainly on frogs, but will also eat other vertebrates. Although venomous, there has never been a recorded fatality from this iconic Aussie species. Like all snakes, if you leave them alone they will happily do the same.

18.01.2022 This Copperhead was removed from a garage in Mt Clear.

17.01.2022 This is a White-lipped Snake (Drysdalia coronoides) from the Ballarat area. They grow to about 40cm long and can be distinguished by a white streak on their upper lips. They eat small lizards and frogs. They are only mildly venomous and not regarded as dangerous to humans.

17.01.2022 Another Copperhead cut free from bird netting

17.01.2022 Creswick Copperhead

15.01.2022 This is the third snake caught in bird netting this week. Using a finer mesh net might help prevent this

15.01.2022 This is a Tiger Snake (Notechis scutatus) found near Clunes. It is a commonly encountered species here in temperate Victoria, favoring cool moist areas such as swamp edges and creek banks. When provoked, they often flatten their head and neck and raise themselves to present the broadest aspect to the aggressor (see picture below). This is not to be confused with aggressive behavior, it is simply a way of letting us know we are too close. They are highly venomous.

13.01.2022 Its spring and snakes are out! This deadly Copperhead was found in Snookums cage at Cambrian Hill. The owner says its the third snake theyve seen in two days...! Watch how calmly Jesse from Ballarat Snake Catchers handles the 11th most venomous snake in the world. All snakes caught are released in habitats away from people. See more

12.01.2022 Little snake found in a sand pit

10.01.2022 Hi there! Got a snake in your yard, house or shed? Dont try and kill it, most people who get bitten by a snake do so trying to kill it! And they are protected! Give me a call, Im happy to come relocate one 24/7!

10.01.2022 Another day another Copperhead

09.01.2022 This Lowlands Copperhead attempted to move through some fruit tree netting and became severely entangled in the process. This is the third time this year Ive had to cut snakes free from these deathtraps. Avoid using this sort of fine mesh netting if possible or at the very least refrain from leaving large masses of netting close to the ground like this. Snakes and other animals try to seek shelter within them, often dying a slow death doing so.

08.01.2022 Ive had a number of people ask the highly debatable question "is it legal to kill a snake if you feel as though its directly threatening your life." its a contentious issue because yes you can kill a snake if you feel as though its directly threatening your life. But this is rarely the case. There should never be a situation where the only option is to kill the snake. One can easily walk away from the snake. If it happens to be in the house and is causing distress to peop...le, it isnt difficult to keep your distance and call a trained professional to come and safely remove it. The law stating that its acceptable to kill a snake in a life threatening situation is founded on false premise and is a result of ignorance and a blatant misunderstanding of snakes. People kill snakes under the incorrect assumption that the snake wants to intentionally harm people, unprovoked. But in reality, there is never such a life threatening situation where the only rational thing to do is kill an innocent animal such as a snake. Its ethically unjustifiable. Yet (unfortunately) legally justified. See more

06.01.2022 Spoke about snakes on ABC Radio Ballarat last week, have a listen!

06.01.2022 Two Copperheads under one door in Mt Doran. Luckily I was only around the corner releasing the first one when they found the second one.

04.01.2022 Despite the belief that Australia has some of the most venomous snakes in the world, new research shows being bitten by a snake is uncommon in Australia and dying from a snakebite is very rare.

04.01.2022 Do you know what the best thing is about spring? Snakes are coming out again!! This is the time of year when theyre most active, taking advantage of the sunny days to warm up, move around and males begin the search for a mate. Most of the callouts we get are in September and October, as they emerge from their winter retreat and frogs are a plentiful snack. If youre lucky enough to come across one in your yard, admire it from a safe distance, it will move along eventually. If it happens to outstay its welcome, call a snake catcher and well relocate it for you. Were available 24/7 and happy to help. (Plus we just love seeing snakes!) Heres a Lowlands Copperhead being released near Ballarat.

03.01.2022 This Copperhead was caught in bird netting in the exact spot another individual was trapped two days earlier. Possibly a male tracking a female.

03.01.2022 Copperhead behind a washing machine in Creswick

02.01.2022 This Lowland Copperhead was unearthed from beneath an old tree stump in a paddock north of Ballarat. There are several other observations of Copperheads being found brumating (i.e., the reptile equivalent of hibernating) in the dirt beneath tree stumps over the cooler months. Check your stumps!

01.01.2022 Bird netting strikes again

01.01.2022 Here is my snake interview with ABC radio from a few weeks ago. Have a listen if you would like to hear some general information about snakes around Victoria. https://soundcloud.com//snakes-in-the-plain-ballarat-snake
