25.01.2022 WHAT IS CALMBIRTH? I get asked this question a lot, so I thought I’d share a little more about Calmbirth. Calmbirth is a childbirth education program, that is founded by a midwife, and constantly updated with the latest evidence & scientific research available.... The course is approximately 12 hours of face to face learning, broken up into 4 different classes. I normally run my classes over 2 consecutive Sunday’s. Class one we discuss the power of the mind & how the mind benefits and requires a fear free zone to be able to enter into a positive and productive birthing zone. Class two discusses the physical components of what is happening inside the woman’s body during labour & birth and the classic signs and symptoms you can expect. Class three is the practical tools and a whole heap of education on all the possibility’s of birth. We discuss pain relief & how to work with processes that are involving intervention. Class four finishes the course off with lots of discussion around after the baby is born. Setting realistic expectations as a couple together and preparing to welcome another family member into your home. The class is not just for hippy’s- although hippy’s are of course most welcome along with ANY other pregnant person & support person. It is also for anyone wanting to get more informed and have a more empowering birth experience, be it your first baby or 4th. I am a midwife, nurse and mother who has had very different birth experiences myself. I openly discuss all topics of birth and promise I don’t have a specific agenda for how you ‘should’ birth. In fact, I don’t care how you choose to birth, where you birth or with who you birth- but I do care that you feel you have correct, evidence based information available to you to make an informed and empowering experience for you as a family. To book into a course with me or for more information, head over to my website www.babiesballarat.com.au (link in bio), or to the @calmbirth website. Is there anything else you would like to know about Calmbirth? Let me know below your questions and I’ll get back to them as soon as possible. Rosie x

14.01.2022 Birth time documentary Last week I, along with many other women (don’t think I saw any men ), got to watch the incredible @birthtimeworld documentary. The biggest shock I got, was that I wasn’t shocked, about the current care provided here in Australia.... You see we have a system that is not working. We have 1 in 3 women reporting they have a traumatic birth. #itstime to change. One of the main reasons women report trauma in birth, is the feeling of coercion, being a passenger in their own bodies, & having things ‘done’ to them rather than being informed & consented appropriately. So what can we do? We need to get educated. We need to look at the evidence & we need to make sure women & families are feeling supported & listened to. Continuity of maternity care programs (care provided by a known care provider through pregnancy, birth & postpartum), are a proven way to save babies lives, & to meet the emotional needs of families. Yet here in Ballarat, we don’t have a true CoMC team (COCO is the closest thing we have, but is a team of 8 midwives, of which you meet some of them throughout your journey). We have private obstetric care, & the fragmented public health care system. Only 8% of women in Australia have access to true CoMC programs...why?! The change has to be pushed by the consumer-YOU. Yep, supply & demand works just the same in the maternity world. So get educated. Know what you want in your journey from conception to postnatal care. Find evidence that is accurate & non-biased. And then the hardest part- advocate for yourself, get your team on board to help you advocate & know that you can say NO, NOT YET, YES, or ask further questions until you understand what is happening. Everyone’s risk threshold is different, but every family/woman need to feel supported and listened to. If this post has triggered anyone in anyway, I am sorry. This post is trying to highlight that positive change can happen, if we do it together. No one wants to be traumatised in/by birth. Please seek professional help if you are one of the 1:3 who has suffered a traumatic birth. Some resources are tagged in pic.

10.01.2022 precipitated (meaning- quick, <3hrs), vaginal birth This is my 4th birth story, and probably the most powerful yet the smallest story of all. I entered into the pregnancy with a feeling of satisfaction and confidence. I think this feeling of ease happened as a consequence of my previous births and everything that they had taught me, along with my continuing practice of Calmbirth and my simple positive belief in birth.... For those who don’t know, I had a previous still born, vaginal delivery, induced at 23 weeks gestation. An emergency caesarean at 35 weeks due to chorioamnionitis (an infection of the lining of the uterus), and a forceps birth, VBAC, at 41 weeks with epidural and gestational diabetes (you can find those stories in my feed). I had felt like I had almost had the whole lot of things. As I entered my last pregnancy I had no expectations on how it was going to be, I simply worked on me, and worked hard at creating the most positive birth outcome for me. Again, I got diagnosed with Gestational diabetes (GDM). Again, this time I was more informed, more at ease. I knew my body could grow a healthy baby-id done it before. Swipe across for the rest of the story and some candid (very unprofessional, real & raw iPhone photos!)... And if anyone is wondering why this post has taken so long...it was because I actually didn’t have one single photo of her birth on my phone (they were on my husbands!)... yep, I couldn’t believe it either If you would like to share your birth stories for other women/families to get inspiration from, please send them through to me. I myself am no writer, so please don’t think it has to be perfect or a certain way- just the way you recollect it is perfect! And of course ANYONE is welcome to share their story here, no just Calmbirth couples! X

06.01.2022 SICK HAPPENS When we are pregnant we can do so many things to help us achieve a smoother transition to parenthood and all the responsibilities that come with that new job title. I reached out to the lovely Penny, from @sick.happens , who shares her wealth of practical and evidence based knowledge as a paediatric nurse and mum of two little boys.... Penny also offers education to help parents know when help might be needed for their children, and gives lots of tips to help you along the way. Thank you Penny for sharing your knowledge with us First Aid Kit Essentials What does a Paediatric Nurse recommend to have on hand at home for our little people? Well, to be honest, I am a bit of a minimalist. I don’t like to stockpile things, nor do I think that it is necessary for parents to feel like they have to be able to treat any and every sickness or injury on their own. Sure, there are absolutely some tools and medications that will make your life easier, but more often than not these medications will expire before they get used, or you spend big money on gadgets that you don’t really need. Here is my minimalist list of first aid kit essentials (swipe for more details): Medications Paracetamol & Ibuprofen Antihistamine Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) Tools Thermometer Bandaids Tweezers Ice packs Skin items Insect repellent Suncream Nappy rash cream Hand Gel (at least 60% alcohol) Sprays or creams for insect bites So if you’re pregnant or have small children make sure you head over and follow Penny’s page- @sick.happens her reels are

06.01.2022 Is your mind open to birth? Our culture tends to view birth simply as a physical process of the female body, the mechanical opening of the uterus and cervix, th...en the expulsion of a baby from the uterus and out of the vagina. But birth is far more complex than this. For birth is just as much of the mind as it is of the body. It relies on the birthing woman/person and their support team to understand and work with the intimate interdependent relationship of the Mind-Body-Birth connection. The belief systems surrounding birthing women and people have an enormous impact on how a woman or birthing person works with their birth emotionally and physically, and how their body will then respond to this, determining not just their physical journey but how they walk out of their birth at an emotional level. These belief systems also influence the environment created around women and birthing people by their support team and caregivers and can significantly impact the birthing journey and outcomes of birth at all levels. And let’s face it, our cultural beliefs about birth need a big re-work because they are creating too much fear-based misinformation and misconception. At Calmbirth we believe that an open mind is an open body, and our priority is reframing the way birth is viewed and perceived, opening minds to the amazing possibilities of birth. So, if you are a birthing couple, or a caregiver, enrol now in one of our courses to learn all you will need to know about the majesty of the female body and how to work with it and support the Mind-Body-Birth connection and in turn, opening your minds to birth. 05.01.2022 SLEEP It drives me mad how society decides if a baby is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ based on their sleeping. It’s important to understand what is normal & some realistic expectations around what babies mostly do especially in those first few months as we all evolve & learn. I asked the lovely Jen @jenbutlerearlyparenting to share her tips for all of you who are pregnant!... Thanks Jen Okay my top 3 sleep tips for expecting parents: your baby will likely snooze a lot during the day and be more wakeful in the evening and early night in the first 6 weeks. This is a normal developmental process, where the circadian rhythm needs to reverse, but knowing it’s coming helps you to go in prepared! Your newborn will likely need someone (you, your partner or another loving person!) or something (a baby swing or a dummy) to fall asleep. Very few newborns can fall asleep without any motion, closeness or sucking. It’s up to you to put your newborn to sleep. Unfortunately, most babies don’t just fall asleep when they’re tired, and if they’re left awake longer than average awake times for their age, you may end up with a very overtired little babe! Jen also has a podcast, with episode 17 being all about awake windows. She also has a free download available for you too! Remember you can never spoil a newborn baby with too much love
