23.01.2022 It's breeding season for much of Victoria's wildlife and, as the days get warmer and longer, kangaroos are leaping into action. Sadly, last year the number of vehicle collisions involving kangaroos peaked in October and November, and that trend looks set to continue this year due to increased rainfall across the state. Grass at the sides of roads is often fresher due to increased water run-off, making these areas more appealing to our hungry marsupial mates.... Please be vigilant if you're driving through regional Victoria, or even in metropolitan areas at dawn or dusk, and especially in areas where there are wildlife signs. If you encounter injured wildlife, please contact Wildlife Victoria on 8400 7300. Ballarat Crime Watch.

21.01.2022 With the recent updates to regional restrictions, our volunteers will safely resume essential training. Since the earlier stages of COVID restrictions our members have taken a break from face-to-face skills maintenance and training. This allowed them to work in separate crews and focus only on responding to emergencies. From this week, you might see us back out undertaking training in small groups to ensure we have the essential skills and capability required to respond t...o an emergency. Emergency services as a permitted industry are able to conduct critical training and exercising under the directions, as endorsed by the Victorian Chief Health Officer. Our crews are following all the COVIDSafe principles, wearing masks and working hard to ensure we are there for our community. If you need our local volunteers any time of the day or night 24/7 we are here. Please call 132 500 from anywhere in Victoria for flood, storm, landslide, tsunami and earthquake emergencies. 06.01.2022 Fur goodness sake When members of the Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade respond to incidents, they are not always sure what will await their arrival. They say curiosity killed the cat but in this case, an adventurous ferret found himself in a tight spot when he ventured down the shower drain on Monday night. When the Brigade arrived, Valentine the ferret had already managed to free himself from the shower drain, but unfortunately made his way further into the waste water pipes u...nderneath the house slab. Firefighters were concerned Valentine would make his way out of the house’s plumbing system and into the town sewer so acted quickly to locate the service inspection point of the property and temporally block access out of the house system. The next task was to determine if Valentine was still located in the house pipe system, and work out his exact location. A Brigade member used his contacts to quickly obtain the specialist services of a local plumber with a drain inspection camera. There was initial relief when the inspection camera discovered a pair of glowing eyes looking back at it in the pipe work, and even more hope when Valentine had the nous to follow the camera back to where access had been made at the inspection point. The dilemma was now that Valentine was now located about 1.5 meters down a 10 cm pipe. A plan was devised to dig out the soil around the inspection pipe and to then remove the top section of the pipe, reducing the distance required for Valentines escape. Valentine was eventually coaxed out of the pipe using some food scraps and a mop, and was bought to the surface clinging on to a pair of Firefighter braces. Overall it took approximately 90 minutes to free the paw ferret. Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade would like to thank local Plumber Gareth Ryan from Green Pipes Plumbing who responded quickly to our request and donated his time and services.
