25.01.2022 Recently seen at the Old Ballarat Cemetery and it seems to be in the Chinese section. Has anybody got any information as to what it might be or its purpose. Located near Lexton St at the NW Corner of the cemetery. Importantly, its quite small - approximately 3 metres to top of the metal.

14.01.2022 BALLARAT CEMETERY RECYCLING TODAY FOR TOMORROW As part of Recycling Week (11-17 Nov 2019) Ballarat Cemeteries has initiated the recycling of soft plastics withi...n their cemeteries. From Monday 11 November, Ballarat Cemeteries will have bright yellow wheelie bins around their cemeteries and encourage visitors to remove the plastic wraps from flowers and put into the bins before placing flowers on graves. Charlie Stebbing, Operations Manager at Ballarat Cemeteries (pictured below) explained that Plastics, especially the external wrapping from around flowers has become an environmental hazard with bags and wrapping flying around in the wind, getting caught in fencing and on other graves. It also ends up in the waterways, drains and even residents properties that neighbour the Cemetery. Annie De Jong, CEO of the Ballarat Cemeteries commented that in supporting our Ballarat Cemeteries strategy of being kind to the environment, the removal of soft plastic being used in the cemetery is protecting the community asset we manage. The yellow bins are clearly labelled and will be taken to a central collection sites by staff which are located at Coles and Safeway Supermarkets. See more

08.01.2022 Ballarat History THE LATE CAPTAIN OF THE BALLARAT FIRE BRIGADE 1871 While wandering through the old cemetery, I came across a finely crafted headstone and upon ...closer inspection found a firemans helmet carved into the base of the headstone along with a sincere and heartfelt inscription. Research revealed these articles both of the funeral and about his life from the Ballarat Star newspaper in July 1871: Captain Charles Dunn THE LATE CAPTAIN OF THE BALLARAT FIRE BRIGADE. The late Charles Dunns memory was, solemnly honoured on Holiday by the unveiling of the monumental grave-stone erected at his grave, not far from the Mortuary Chapel in the Old Cemetery. The spot is about halt-way between the entrance gates and the chapel, and the stone is of marble, upon a bluestone basement. On the marble is the following inscription: Erected by the Members of the Ballarat Fire Brigade, in memory of their late Captain, Charles Dunn, born at Aberlay, Haddington, Scotland, who died on the 8th of July, 1871. Aged 39 years. Know thou, 0 stranger to the fame Of this much-loved, much-honoured name. For none that knew him need be told. A warmer heart death never made cold. Burns On the bluestone base were chiselled a firemans helmet in the middle, and on either side the trumpet and hose branch, looking not very unlike the classical inverted torches. Members of all the fire brigades in the town were present, and several other well-known citizens, for the deceased was a man of many friends. Captain Franz, his successor, unveiled the stone, and the Rev. William Henderson, of St. Andrews, at which church the deceased used to worship, pronounced a fitting oration. He spoke of the deceased as having left Scotland early for America and thence came to Victoria, his brother sailing at the same time from Scotland for Victoria, and the ships approaching so closely in mid-ocean that the brothers saw each other. With a few merited eulogiums on the character and work of the deceased, and some admonitions appropriate to the living and the occasion, the ceremony was concluded. Ballarat Star 11th July 1871 Saturday evening, Mr Charles Dunn, captain of the Ballarat Fire Brigade. The deceased was a stalwart man whose sudden death has taken everybody by surprise, as it is only a few" days since he was engaged about his usual labor as a smith. Inflammation of the lungs is said to have been the cause of death. The deceased was an old resident and one of the earliest members of the brigade of which he was Captain at the time of his death. All his comrades, as well as all his acquaintances spoke of him as a brave, sober, and gentle man, who was always ready to do a dangerous as well as a kindly duty. A widow and family of five children are left. The deceased was only 39 years of age, and a native of Aberlady, county of Haddington, Scotland. His connection with the Ballarat Fire Brigade was made in January, 1860. On 2nd June, 1862, he was appointed apparatus officer on 9th July,1863, Lieutenant and his connection with the brigade as Captain has lasted since 8th April, 1867. Only on Monday last he presided at the annual meeting, and was re-elected to the office of Captain, and was engaged in the active duties of the brigade up to Wednesday. On Thursday he was at work in his ordinary vocation. On Saturday evening, Mr B. Geilhofer, Hon. Secretary, telegraphed the intelligence of his death to a large number of sister brigades, with information. That the funeral would take place at three oclock on Monday afternoon. At a meeting of the brigade, on Saturday evening, it was resolved to invite the attendance at the funeral of all ex officers, honorary members, and past and active members of the local brigade; also to the city and Sebastopol brigades at large, and the members of the borough and city councils. On Sunday the flags at the Eastern and Western fire-stations were floated half mast high. To-day the members of the brigade will muster at the Eastern fire station at 2.30, and according to custom, the bell will toll for an hour. We see that the Mayor of Ballarat East has requested that the burgesses (an inhabitant of a town or borough with full rights of citizenship) will show the usual mark of respect by closing their shops on the occasion, and other announcements indicate that the members of the Pioneer Lodge of Oddfellows and the Caledonian Society, of each of which deceased was a member, will be present. Captain Dunn was a sterling man and a most efficient Captain, and his early and unexpected decease is much lamented. .

08.01.2022 Miss Ballara 1870 - 1952 Florence Ellen Towl was born at Ballarat East 1870, one of eleven children, to Edward Towl, a Ballarat chemist, and Maria nee Gilchrist.... As a girl Florence demonstrated great promise as a singer and studied music under the acclaimed Madame Weiderman at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. In 1902 on completion of her musical education, Florence departed Australia and arrived in Europe. After her arrival in Europe Florence adopted the stage name of Miss Ballara by emulating Dame Nellie Melba, who had also adopted the stage name of her birthplace. Miss Ballara secured many professional engagements where she reportedly had many admirers and had an instant impression on audiences. Florence performed on many stages across Europe, including Germany, England and toured South Africa. Credited with having a beautiful, pure contralto voice which she uses with great skill and taste and being the first of the antipodean contraltos to perform to acclaim on a German opera stage. In London, Florence debuted at the Queens Hall Concert Hall where she was reportedly recalled back to the stage four times. In Germany, Florence sang at the acclaimed Court Theatre in Mecklenberg as the Principal Contralto. Her voice was reported as a rich mezzo-soprano covering two octaves easily. Her upper notes are ringing and powerful, her middle range is particularly pleasant, and her lower notes, whilst true and resonant, avoid the masculine quality which some contraltos affect. Her style is above all, dramatic and impassioned. She was often favorably compared to Madame Melba and received glowing reviews in newspapers back in Australia. One reporter stated, This lady warbles under the name of Miss Ballara, and the townships and cities of this end of the planet are on the highway to being immortalized in their songstresses. In 1907 Florence returned to Melbourne, and in recognition of her global success and acclaim, was given the honor of performing at the opening of State Parliament. The Ballarat papers also reported that a sell-out concert at Her Majestys Theatre in June 1907 was a great success: April 11, 1907 The Ballarat Star Florence Towl has by sheer force of talent, pluck, and assiduous attention to study, fought her way into the front rank of opera singers in the home of Wagnerian music as severe and exacting a test as any artist could desire. Miss Towl left us in 1900 an ingenue; she comes back an artist, and more than that cannot be said. Two years later Florence retired from the stage. As was the custom, or perhaps her choice, Florence retired from performing to become a wife and mother to marry Major Charles Bury Collins, in Essex. The happy couple lived in India and visited Australia several times before retiring to a quiet life in England. Florence and Charles had three children. Florence died January 8, 1952, aged 82, in Essex. Edward and Maria Towel are buried at Ballarat Old Cemetery Florences forced retirement due to marriage while in her prime performing years was sadly the end of a brilliant, and brief, career played on a global stage. Now vastly overshadowed by the historic legacy of Dame Nellie Melba. Florence deserves much wider recognition in her home town for achieving wide acclaim from her humble beginnings in Ballarat, daughter of a Chemist, to performing in front of vast adoring crowds across Europe.

05.01.2022 Are you a direct descendant of Alban and Eliza ATWOOD - Welsh migrants who arrived in Ballarat during the 1850s? They lived at Clarendon Street, 11 Drummond S...t and Eliza passed away at 4 Bradshaw St - the home of one one of her daughters, Maria ANDERSON. Their surviving children were John Jones (Jack), Maria, Susannah, Henrietta, Sarah and Alban Junior. Surnames associated with these children via marriage are CASELLI, ANDERSON, BARLOW, MILLER, POWNE, ATKINSON, SURMON and HEINRICH. Further to my liaison with the Old Cemetery and a monumental stonemason to ensure regulatory framework is met, Im collating contact details to let ancestors know of my intention (of which I intend to fund) to preserve and restore the Atwood family grave in the Old Cemetery where Alban, Eliza and three of their grandchildren rest. Please share this for me and my ancestors.
