16.01.2022 Spotlight on Shirlene! In the lead up to Thank a Volunteer Day, we're shining the spotlight on some of our wonderful volunteers. Who do you volunteer for? I volunteer at the Canning River Eco Education Centre. I work alongside staff helping to create a public gallery that informs and inspire visitors to the centre about environmental and community topics.... I am also a volunteer Merchandise Officer of the Over 55’s Cycling Club and you might see groups of our cyclists riding around in their bright yellow jerseys. I thoroughly enjoy this role and getting to know many of our 400 members. Why do you volunteer? When I retired after 45 years as a Registered Nurse, I knew that I would need something to replace the challenging but rewarding job/lifestyle that nursing is. I found this at CREEC and have loved being part of the team for the past eight years. I am inspired by seeing children and adults appreciate our beautiful Canning River Regional Park and the Eco Centre. I hope that each little bit of new information or awareness gained by our visitors will lead to a better understanding on how to preserve and protect the environment and thus our native plants and animals. I like that through my roles at CREEC and the Over55 CC I can make a difference to people’s lives and the environment, albeit in a small way. Thank you Shirlene! Have you considered becoming a volunteer? 02.01.2022 Flashback Friday - Old Riverton Bridge The original bridge (locally known as Rileys Bridge) was built in 1911, largely funded by local market gardener Fred Riley as he needed a way to get his produce to the markets in Perth. Previously, local growers had to send their produce across the river on a home-made punt. ... The bridge fell into disrepair by the 1930s, and was replaced by the current structure in 1954.
