22.01.2022 Have you ever thought about your flock's immune systems? Breanna Carr talks a bit about chook immunity and how it affects their health. There are many diseases that are common within backyard flocks, and chances are your girls have one or multiple of the following. Thankfully, most flocks seem to cope well with many of the respiratory diseases, with only immunocompromised hens showing signs of sickness. If you feed and manage your chickens well, there’s a good chance you’ll hardly lose a chicken or see disease within your flock. https://barastocpoultry.com.au/boosting-immunity-in-your-f/ #BarastocPoultry #WePutTheChickenBeforeTheEgg BC Bantams

10.01.2022 It’s a noisy surprise when one of your chicks doesn’t grow up to be a hen, but a rooster. This isn’t uncommon, as its very hard to tell a male chick from female. Has it ever happened to you? barastocpoultry.com.au/hengineering/... #BarastocPoultry #WePutTheChickenBeforeTheEgg #NationalChookHealthMonth #Hengineering See more

09.01.2022 When the temperature rises in summer you may notice your chooks displaying some new behaviours. Dust bathing is really common and something they do to cool themselves down. Covering themselves in dirt removes direct sunlight from their feathers and skin. Digging and burrowing also enables them to find comfort in cooler layers the dirt. #BarastocPoultry #WePutTheChickenBeforeTheEgg

07.01.2022 Yolklore time. Love the look of orange-gold yolks? The more yellow and orange fruits and vegetables in your chook’s diet, the richer their yolk colour will become. 03.01.2022 Did you know? Chooks don't have sweat glands! So they have to find other ways to cool themselves down in summer. You may notce them panting, dust bathing and drinking more water than usual. One thing you can do for your flock is make sure they have plenty of shade from the sun. #BarastocPoultry #WePutTheChickenBeforeTheEgg

02.01.2022 Dogs, eagles and hawks can all pose threats to your chooks. But nothing’s quite as cunning as the fox. To keep your girls safe, it’s worth regularly checking their hen house for signs of damage or attempted entry. 02.01.2022 Junior ambassador Jack Murphy has been getting ready for spring breeding season with some new brooders. Once again, breeding season is in full swing and it’s time to assess your breeding pens and brooders. As chicks grow, it is important to have suitable sized pens to fit their needs. Here is a simple and cost-effective brooder system that has worked for me for the last few seasons. I have constructed these brooders using 1000L IBCs as they are easily cleaned, inexpensive and a suitable size. After each batch of chickens, they are cleaned out and sanitised ready for the next batch. 01.01.2022 On days when it's really hot you may notice your chooks being a bit more fussy with what parts of their feed they'll eat. (Red bits are the best!) Because the process of digestion generates internal heat, they're reducing what they eat to keep cool. Unfortunately they may not be getting all of the nutrients they need. Moving from a grain mix or a mash to a nutrient dense pellet can really help! Champion Layer is a premium pellet high in protein and packed with nutrients. #BarastocPoultry #WePutTheChickenBeforeTheEgg

01.01.2022 Are your girls laying less, or stopped laying? This is often the first sign they are suffering from heat stress. Make sure they have areas of shade and shelter to get out of the sun, and opportunities to dust bathe. Also make sure their water is cool and clean. A frozen treat is a great way to help them cool off and keep them engaged. #BarastocPoultry #WePutTheChickenBeforeTheEgg
