25.01.2022 This evening I have been chatting to a client that highlights the reason why formulating accurately can be so vital. Her 7 month old labrador puppy is suffering... with recurrent and severe skin issues. There are multiple suspected allergies present and there have been multiple reactions to specific foods. We need an exclusion diet... This puppy presents a problem though.... BARF diet would recommend using a variety of meats, bone, offal and vegetables to ensure that nutritional needs are met. This dog has had reactions to multiple meats and many vegetables/other foods. Some have been actual, some are on test result only. In trying to improve the condition early in life, she has also been exposed to many more proteins than a normal puppy her age. We need to find an exclusion diet that contains foods that she has NOT been exposed to. This list is going to be very, very short.... Variety is not an option. She is also a growing, large breed puppy... Her nutritional needs are both different and rapidly changing as she grows. Occasionally with an adult dog we might opt to use an exclusion diet that was unbalanced for a short period in the knowledge that for a period of 6-12 weeks this would be *relatively* unlikely to cause a serious issue. In 6-12 weeks this puppy may increase in size by up to 1/3... her bones are growing, her growth plates are still open. Her nerves, ligaments and tendons are all still growing... It is not safe or sensible to use an unbalanced diet for this long in a puppy.... Commercial hydrolysed diets are not currently helping and the owner is keen to try something else. The dog has had allergy testing that shows there are currently no environmental allergies... it is very, very likely to be food. Just 'feeding raw' did not solve the issue. What now..... ? We get clever... Intake forms are vital in situations like this. We need to know EVERYTHING this puppy has been exposed to. We also need to know it's veterinary history. There is no point spending days formulating and preparing an exclusion diet if other related issues (infections, parasites) are not under control. We need to work with the clients vet. We then need to use nutritional science to properly formulate a diet that has very limited ingredients, but is STILL complete and balanced according to FEDIAF guidelines. We need to make sure that this pups Calcium, Phosphorus and Vitamin D remain in perfect ratio to ensure that we don't cause a bony defect during our food trial. We need to make sure we continue to provide enough omega 3 (DHA) for brain development and while we are at it we will try to provide an anti-inflammatory ratio of omega 3:6 to reduce inflammation if we possibly can. We need to ensure that there are plenty of the right kinds of amino acids for growth of muscles, and the correct calorie content at every stage and weight that she will pass through during the time she is eating this diet. THIS is the reason we (Vets, nurses, pet owners!) need to get smart about raw and home-cooked diets. I often hear from both owners and holistic vets say that this kind of science is not really necessary or is overkill. I understand that, for most healthy dogs, a well thought out BARF based diet will not be far from the 'optimal nutrition' mark but I would argue that there are many situations in veterinary medicine, just like this one, where traditional 'models' of raw feeding are not enough... Knowing how to formulate accurately and understanding the very basics of nutrition is the thing that means that THIS puppy can use a whole food exclusion diet SAFELY :-). Please note - this is NOT the puppy involved in the photo :-) It is just a puppy I met a few months ago that was begging to be on The RAW Vet Facebook page :-)

13.01.2022 Love this video by @dutchie.daemon that compares a dog walking freely to a variety of harnesses. Some points to consider: compari...son between the harness with horizontal straps across the shoulders to Y shaped - varying gait biomechanics. the shortened cranial phase of the stride when each harness is connected to a static point to mimic a lead. decreased overall stride length and speed of gait when harness is connected to fixed lead - observe how the dog moves closer to the end of the treadmill. changes in facial expression action of leaning into the harness when connected to fixed lead. decreased lateral pelvic flexion during horizontal harness use considerably decreased dorsocaudal shoulder rolling movement of the scapula and thoracolumbar movement when horizontal harness connected to fixed lead. Accompanied with raised head and neck position.
