14.01.2022 Deputy Mayor and Community Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said our modest gallery had helped build an enthusiastic and loyal audience for visual arts in the region. Regional art galleries play a critical development role in the creative industries and cultural identity of a town or region, and as the only publically operated gallery in our region, the Caloundra Regional Gallery has carried that considerable weight very successfully, Cr Baberowski said. Since it opene...d in 2000, it’s easy to imagine the fantastic number of local artists the gallery has supported, in addition to fostering and hosting national and international exhibitions as well as cultivating one of the most well-renowned regional art prizes in the state. I remember being at the opening, thinking that Bark Design Architects had done a fantastically creative conversion of a small existing office space into a flexible gallery space with just enough capacity to serve us while we learn and grow as a region. Twenty years later, we have certainly learned and with amalgamation we have certainly grown. 06.01.2022 Congratulations on 20 amazing years of visual arts exhibitions for our Sunshine Coast region @caloundraregionalgallery @sunshinecoastcouncil As Bark Architects’ @barkarchitects launch project for our practice in 1998, we look back extremely proud in the adaptive reuse competition winning design. Inspired by Finnish modernist architect, Alvar Aalto’s sinuous ‘Savoy Vase’, designed for the Savoy restaurant in Helsinki and later exhibited in the 1937 Paris Fair, the gallery is ...conceived as the addition of a sinuous volume with soft, fluid contours. Sitting within the twisted forms and papery skin of several ‘sacred’ Melaleuca trees, the gallery focuses all attention to a new curving, free form, steel and timber, glazed enclosure. This maintains a sensitive relationship to the landscape through varying degrees of transparency, translucency, shadow, reflection, colour and contrast. As a sculptural piece, the shop front’s flowing edge to the landscape provides a fluid relationship between inside and out. The articulated membrane of glass transforms from a kaleidoscope that enhances the changing light throughout the day to a lantern within the trees as night. In 1998, Bark Architects won an open competition to design the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery and it stands today as one of our very first projects. This project realised the Council’s proposal to upgrade and convert the old Caloundra Library into an Art Gallery to act as a hub for Caloundra’s growing civic and cultural precinct. The transformed space integrates a series of flexible spaces with pivoting and sliding wall panels. Although remodelled, the existing building is visible through a new, fully-glazed retail space on the northeast corner of the plan. . . . . #caloundraregionalartgallery #architecture #sunshinecoastarchitects #barkarchitects #design #sunshinecoastarchitecture #noosaarchitects #queenslandarchitecture #brisbanearchitects #journal @ Caloundra Regional Gallery
