20.01.2022 My January column in Bush n Beach magazine features an interview highlighting the innovative approach by the committee to this years Weipa Fishing Classic. There's a great lesson on community spirit there as well as coping with restraints of the Covid virus.

20.01.2022 An enjoyable yet disturbing read chock full of facts and anecdotes from a lifetime as a fisheries scientist studying the freshwater species of our Murray Darling system. There would be no better authority on the subject than Stu Rowland.

19.01.2022 Great initiative for young rec fishers from South Australia. How long must we wait for something similar in Queensland?!!!

15.01.2022 Mentoring young fishers has given me lots of joy over the years. It's the subject of my column in Bush & Beach for December. Have a wonderful Christmas and a fish filled 2021. Stay safe!

09.01.2022 Today's technology is wonderful yet bewildering to those of us who were there at the dawn of the revolution. My Fish & Boat column for December looks back in time and asks whether fisho's have lost certain skills now that finding spots is so easy! I think there may be some lessons there.

04.01.2022 The sale of grossly undersized reef fish such as red emperor and mangrove jack taken by fish trawling has been happening for years in spite of numerous complaints to Fisheries Departments. In the Queensland Gulf of Carpentaria, there were calls for this to be resolved but because the fish were taken more than 25NM offshore, they were deemed to be taken in Commonwealth waters and therefore were not subject to Qld fisheries regulations. This was the line that was repeatedly off...ered by senior fisheries managers. While preparing my submission to the renewal of the export license to fish trawlers in the GOC, I found that the practice was indeed in breach of the arrangements between state and commonwealth - and any fish sold WERE SUBJECT TO QLD LAW. Here's the relevant info: "The GOCDFFTF is managed by QDAF under the Queensland Fisheries Act 1994,Queensland Fisheries (Commercial Fisheries) Regulation 2019 and the Fisheries (General) Regulation 2019. It has operated under Queensland Fisheries Joint Authority (QFJA) jurisdiction since June 1998. The QFJA is established in the Arrangement between the Commonwealth of Australia and the State of Queensland in relation to the Fishery for Northern Demersal and Pelagic Fish in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The 1995 arrangement provides, among other things, that the relevant species be managed by the QFJA under Queensland law. [ The Developmental Fishing Permit and its conditions will be reviewed by QDAF every 12 months. The permit may be withdrawn (and fishing ceases) if any activity undertaken authorised under the permit is having and undue impact of the sustainability of the fisheries resource or ecosystem; or if the holder fails to comply with permit conditions or there is a discrepancy between data reported between observed and non-observed trips. We've been absolutely misled by our fisheries managers - and it's obviously still happening!! See more

02.01.2022 Trips to the east coast are always memorable!! My Battered & Crumbed column in January Fish & Boat looks at the ups and downs of getting there!
