25.01.2022 Lucky to be Alive! As many of you know, we Barringtons of Silverdale are quite fastidious about our garden which is our pride and joy. Ursula carefully nurses the organic vegie garden and harvests lovely fresh greens and herbs for table daily. Planting, weeding and mulching are also part of her domain. For my part, I am responsible for hard landscaping, maintenance of property, pool, fish-ponds and lawns but must confess that I am pedantic about my hedges, to the point of OCD... according to some of my friends. Recently I had the misfortune to have an accident in the garden and was extremely lucky not to suffer serious injury. While trimming the top of a viburnum hedge, one of the extendable legs on the work platform on which I was standing suddenly gave way throwing me heavily to the ground from a height of 1.5 metres. I made the mistake of giving him access to DIY pics I had taken of the glorious panorama of colourful bruises which emerged on my buttocks, lower back and thighs. I should have known better from the smile which momentarily flashed across his face. Why do people always think it funny when others fall on their backsides? I agreed to his request for permission to write a short story about my misadventure and to publish it in the mistaken hope that it would prevent someone else suffering a similar accident. Big mistake! Within days his short story A Touch of Arse, written in the first person, arrived in my inbox. To my utter amazement he had treated the potentially life-threatening accident with frivolous highly suggestive jocularity. Worse still the farce showed pictures of various parts of my anatomy competing for attention. Full of risqué double entendres, the pseudo-psychological story borders on being pornographic. 23.01.2022 New Addition to the Barrington family An immaculate silver CX 5 has moved in alongside Miss Mazda. He has fallen under the spell of her alluring eyes and svelte lines. She is quite taken with his massive 2.2 litre twin turbo diesel engine, 19 Alloy wheels and rugged good looks. He is two years her senior and comes from a highly respected family in the same region as her country of birth. He is well mannered which speaks volumes of his royal lineage. He has already taken comm...and in his appointed capacity and has fulfilled his official duties with flair and initiative. Ursula and I understand her pet name for him in private is CeeXee which she somewhat shyly pronounces as Sekushi, in her native Japanese. It goes without saying that images of faces covered by a mask with only the eyes visible, will forever be etched in our memories as symbols of 2020. At time of writing the Australian Government Department of Health advice is: Information on the use of surgical masks Should I wear a surgical mask? General public Surgical masks in the community are only helpful in preventing people who have coronavirus disease from spreading it to others. If you are well, you do not need to wear a surgical mask as there is little evidence supporting the widespread use of surgical masks in healthy people to prevent transmission in public. I picked one of the above images because of its relevance to the plot of my latest novel. Belatedly I now see that pic as a salute to and an acknowledgement of the hard work done by dedicated people who have sacrificed so much to protect us and continue to do so. 16.01.2022 Farewell to a Lion With heavy hearts Ursula and I said farewell to our faithful workhorse today. Our Peugeot 307 XSE Hdi Touring has gone to new owners who are able to provide the repairs and TLC needed. Named Silver, the Lion of France immigrated to Australia in 2007, settled in Campbelltown and rapidly became fluent in both French and English before coming to live with us in Silverdale with barely 30,000 km on the odometer. 14.01.2022 Sadness in Silverdale Ursula and I were saddened to find the lifeless body of one of our prize Koi floating on the surface of Koi Pond which had been their home for several years. We had just returned from a holiday weekend away with family at the wonderful Headland Resort in Austinmer on the NSW South Coast.... 11.01.2022 Sleepless night for Ursula and myself last night, as well as for our next door neighbours Nairda and Matthias and fellow residents of the rural village of Silverdale, not to mention Warragamba and Werombi. The fire had jumped across Burragorang Lake at Green Wattle Creek to the eastern side and had raced from Nattai westwards to Orangeville which bore the brunt of the conflagration. More than 200 brave firefighters fought the blaze throughout the night. Our sympathies go to p...eople from Orangeville which is just 19kms from us. Not sure about properties lost or any casualties. Fire Crews were supported by Police / Highway patrol officers who had to close Silverdale road at Werombi Road. Back burning today at Werombi has filled the sky with smoke. Hopefully it will slow the fire's progess towards Silverdale. Today Nattai is under the worst threat and also nearby Oakdale where residents have been instructed to take shelter, too late to flee. 07.01.2022 News from Silverdale - First Projects for 2019 Our project was a previously ignored corner of the garden that needed a bit of a makeover. At Ursula’s suggestion, we picked a somewhat neglected spot at the back of the property, near the man-cave shed and general prep area. My good friend and biographer Derek Roy Tomlinson helped with this one and Ursula assisted with the design, location and the finishing touches of course.... This is the fourth such brick paving we’ve done. Derek’s project has been to finish his latest novel. Derek says there is much to be done before this, the fourth in the series involving Three of the World’s Greatest Contemporary Detectives, can be published. Aside from the structural editing and proof-reading, a suitable picture for the front cover has to be found. Then there is the blurb for the outside of the back cover. He is still looking for a Literary Agent to handle that side of things so he can concentrate on doing what he does bets and loves writing literary fiction. I’ve already had a speed read. I can tell you A Deconstruction of Deaths is a bloody good yarn. It includes details of our recent cruise to Vanuatu on Carnival Spirit for a sad memorial and catch up with old friends but I won’t spoil it for you, his readers.
