22.01.2022 Prolotherapy uses a glucose and local anaesthetic mixture to promote healing of injured joints, ligaments and tendons. In the foot and ankle it is commonly used to treat heel pain, plantar fasciitis, morton's neuroma, plantar plate, Achilles tendon and ankle injuries. The primary action of prolotherapy is to repair connective tissue (primarily ligaments and tendons) that has been strained. Book in for an assessment on 1300 776 055 to see if prolotherapy would be suitable to treat your foot and ankle injury. OR book online via www.basepodiatry.com.au

20.01.2022 Heel Lifts Podiatrists can often recommend heel lifts, maybe you have a leg length discrepancy, or your Achilles needs a break to heal, or to take the pressure off your heel. Whatever the reason it is important that you don't just guess what you need as adding the wrong height heel lift or adding it where not needed can cause more issues, it may even affect the alignment of your knees and hips. Seeking a podiatrists opinion is your first step. They can assess and diagnose... the issue, they may even send you for a scan if they are suspicious of an underlying cause of your symptoms. Bookings can be made online via www.basepodiatry.com.au or call Mount Eliza 1300 776 055 #heellifts #heelpain #mounteliza #podiatry #basepodiatry See more

19.01.2022 Thickened toenails can be caused by: Injuries - Nails can become thicker as they heal. In most cases the thickening of the toenails is often temporary and will return to normal when the damage is healed. Fungus - Fungus growing around the nail can cause the nail to separate from the nail bed as the fungus fills in the area. The nail may also become yellow or brown. Some skin conditions can cause the dead skin cells around the nails to become inflamed or irritated. As th...e irritation becomes worse the toenails thicken and can be quite difficult to maintain. Poor circulation can also cause the toenails to thicken. When there is less blood flow to the toes, it will lower skin quality and the quality of the nail deteriorates. If you have thick nails it can be quite hard to take care of them yourself. There are a few different ways our podiatrists can care for your feet in this case. Symptoms include: toe numbness... swelling of the ball of the foot (around the toes) sharp, stabbing pains between the toes burning sensations worse with tight shoes or heels Treatment mainly focuses on allowing the metatarsal bones to spread and stop the nerve becoming irritated. 04.01.2022 Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) is an inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around your tibia. Pain typically occurs along the inner border of the tibia, where muscles attach to the bone. In general shin splints occur when the bone tissue and muscles attaching to the shin become overworked and overloaded. This can be caused by a flatter foot posture, a rigid foot posture or exercising in inappropriate footwear. 03.01.2022 Foot orthotics are prescribed by podiatrists to help redistribute forces and loads that cause chronic foot and leg injuries. This will ensure that your foot or leg condition can rehabilitate in a timely manner and also help prevent the reoccurrence of the injury. Many foot and leg injuries are mechanical in nature. These mechanical issues can arise from poor foot posture or poor functional stability through the legs and pelvis. Addressing these issues with mechanical treatmen...ts (foot orthotics, footwear, plantar padding) as well as functional strength and flexibility exercises is key to a successful treatment outcome. A comprehensive assessment is required to determine the correct prescription for foot orthotics. 03.01.2022 Children will often have a flatter foot posture as they learn to walk. This is because the muscles and ligaments are still developing and the foot is quite supple and flexible. The majority of children develop normal foot posture which allow them to run and play sport freely. There are some children that maintain a flat footed posture. This lower and more flexible arch can lead to symptoms in the foot and legs. This is generally dependent on the level of sport, rapid growth o...r poor footwear. If your child develops symptoms in their feet or legs (pain after/during sport or periods of standing and walking) then their foot posture may be a factor. The podiatrist's at Base Podiatry can assess and treat conditions associated with foot posture and development and give you the right advice for your child's development. 01.01.2022 PEDICURE DO'S & DON'TS 1. Resist the urge to shave your legs before receiving a pedicure. Freshly shaven legs or small cuts on your legs may allow bacteria to enter. 2. Emery boards are extremely porous and can trap germs that spread. Since they can’t be sterilized, don’t share nail files with friends and be sure to bring your own to the salon, unless you are sure that the salon replaces them with each customer. 3. Ask the nail technician not to push back your cuticles: The n...ail cuticle is one your body’s protection mechanisms for keeping bacteria out. By pushing the cuticle back, you place yourself at a higher risk of infection. 4. Don't use the soaking tubs unless you can be sure they are sterile. Soaking tubs are a haven for bacteria and fungi. 5. Frequently taking off nail polish and allowing the nails to breathe helps prevent extra moisture from building up under the nail. Try pick some times out throughout the year that you don’t use nail polish , your nails will thank you. 6. If you have Diabetes you should be having all your nail and skin care carried out by a podiatrist where you can be sure that autoclave sterilized instruments are being used. www.basepodiatry.com.au 1300 776 055 See more
