25.01.2022 MINI POST: Noel Woolacott, Recognition of Service to SA Basketball August the 15, marks the Victory in the Pacific Day - or 'VP Day' which is commemorated across Australia and the world. As the anniversary of the day World War II ended, it's a date that we'll never forget. With this in mind we are dedicating this mini post to SX18743 Private Noel Woollacott who served in South Australias own 2/10th Infantry Battalion. ... On January 20, 1943 Noel was killed in action New Guinea during fierce fighting against the Japanese. Read about his considerable influence in South Australias basketball history and as a consequence the Woolacott Medal for the Fairest and Most Brilliant Player of the Premier League competition being awarded in his name. With meticulous research by John Spooner and documented by Boti Nagy please read at the link provided. http://www.botinagy.com//basketball-sa-hall-of-fame-induc/

24.01.2022 Dick Butler I first met Dick Butler when we were both members of District Basketballs Junior Committee in the 1970s. Dick was chairman and went on to bigger and better things. He began his career with the Forestville Eagles working as junior coordinator coordinator through the 1970's as well as a member of the management committee from 1972-82. He also served as team manager for numerous South Australian teams at national Junior Championships before going on to be named the... Chair of the SA Junior Committee from 1980-89 and Chairman and Director for the Eagles when they competed in the NBL during two of the league's first three years of operation. Dicks incredible resume reads like a whos who of Australian basketball. Read about it here http://www.basketballsa.com.au//the-queens-birthday-2018-h

19.01.2022 Mini Post: Five time WNBL Champion Rachel Sporn had this to say about the Adelaide Lightning's triumph. This picture would have been after our 1996 premiership win over the Sydney Flames. We won 80-65. Very sweet victory as it was our 3rd straight WNBL premiership. The picture tells the story. Would anyone like to share a memory or comment about Rachael?

15.01.2022 By all accounts this team was the first South Australian team to tour New Zealand. In 1961 the team took an umpire, officials and some of their wives on tour. This tour laid the foundation for further tours by South Australian District teams. The team was extremely talented with a sprinkling of Olympians, State players and well credentialled District players. They won all games, most by huge margins, and defeated the provincial champions Wellington by 35 points. According ...to Joyce Wood, the wife of SA touring umpire Jack Wood, the team sometimes didnt have time to shower before having to get on the bus. The aroma in the bus was pretty strong! Most teams have one or two characters who keep the rest of the team in good spirits. Apparently Michael AhMatt was the fun guy of the team. On one occasion they put him of the bus in jest, and Mike being one of the fittest players around was so quick he ran across the top off the hill and when the bus turned the corner and rejoined the group by jumping on top of the bus!! Much research has gone into this photograph especially naming players and thanks go to Joyce Wood, Rob Wood, Bern Bruning and Arthur Newley. See more

14.01.2022 Inga Freidenfelds Inga was born in Riga, the capital of Latvia. His family migrated to Australia in 1950 and eventually ended up in Adelaide after some time in NSW. At the tender age of 19 he was selected to play for SA in the Australian Championships in Brisbane. By 1956 he was selected to play for Australia in the Olympic Games in Melbourne. Even though he was the second youngest player on the team he was appointed CAPTAIN and finished the second highest scorer on the team... averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds per match. He was named the SA Basketball Player of the Year in 1955, 1956 and 1959 and also represented SA in volleyball. He was selected in Australia’s 1960 Olympic team to play in Rome and eventually retired in 1962. However, he came out of retirement to play for Adelaide in the District competition in 1966 and ended up playing in the grand final against South Adelaide. Inga was Australia’s first Olympic Basketball Captain and was inducted into the South Australian Basketball Hall followed by induction into the Basketball Australia Hall of Fame in 2007. A fantastic career!!

11.01.2022 Mini Post 1968 District Grand Final West vs South. SHOT OR PASS ? Wests Geza Nagy (8), sets a screen for the best shooter in South Australian basketball, Werner Linde (7). State guard Dean Whitford gets caught on the screen, Barry Spry (15) playing straight up help defense, leaves the smallest gap for Werner to squeeze through. Linde rises up with one of his signature, beautifully balanced, one legged shots. But .... SHOT OR PASS ?

01.01.2022 Did you know that Jan Stirling (nee Graham) was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2015 alongside Michael Jordan? Jan started her career playing for the Adelaide Basketball Club at the age of nine. She progressed through the ranks captaining her U/16 team in an undefeated season and was in several U/18 premiership sides. As a short, hard nosed guard she played junior state from 1969-1972 inclusively and captained the U/18 State teams in 1971 and 1972. A senior state pla...yer from 1971 73 Jan is well remembered by her teammates in Torrens for her aggressiveness, tenacity and great dedication to the sport. An All Australian in 72-73 she toured Asia and competed at the 1975 FIBA World Championships for Women in Colombia. As a coach she took over the reins of the Adelaide Lightning in 1993, guiding her team to five consecutive WNBL Grand Finals, winning a hat-trick of titles from 1994-1996 and another in 1998. She reached the pinnacle in coaching when, as the Opals coach, she guided her team to the GOLD medal in the 2006 FIBA World Championships in Brazil. The first- ever gold medal by a senior Australian basketball team would be surrounded by silver medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, bronze at the 2002 FIBA World Championships and gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. In 2008 Stirling was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia(AM) for her contribution to the sport and in 2013 she was elected to the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame.
