24.01.2022 Did you know we had Lace Monitors on the Bass Coast? Lace Monitors or Tree Goanas are Victoria’s biggest lizard and then can be found in remnant Forests and Woodlands in the upper Grantville/The Gurdies area, as well as in Inverloch/Andersons Inlet surrounding area. It’s important we protect the little remaining habitat they have, which is why we have been working with landholders in the Andersons Inlet Landcare Group to fence off large blocks of remnant vegetation (Damp Sand...s Herb-rich Woodland EVC). The project, ‘Places for Laces’ was funded through the Victorian State Government, Victorian Landcare Grants through WGCMA. If you have any remnant vegetation on your property that you’d like to protect, please get in contact with us.

21.01.2022 South Gippsland is the only place in the world where the Giant Gippsland Earthworm (GGE) - Megascolides australis exists. The BBC and David Attenborough visited Brian and Cheryl Enboms property in 2005 to film the earthworms in a documentary called Life in the Undergrowth. BCLN and neighboring Landcare networks have helped Landholders to protect and enhance the habitat of the Giant Gippsland Earthworm over many years. Have you ever heard GGE's when walking over the ground th...ey inhabit? Do you have land on your property which has earthworms present? Tell us your experiences with this unique critter. 20.01.2022 Happy 4 year anniversary to our wonderful Nursery Group! Congratulations and a massive thank you for volunteering and making BLING what it is today. It's always great going to the nursery and seeing the future forests in the thousands of plants you grow. Unfortunately we can't get together to celebrate, but we'll do it as soon as we can, and when you return there will be new benches to work on, and lots of sun coming into the hothouses. There are a few things in the pipeline if we can't get back to the nursery for the start of propagation season. Hope to see you all soon though! (Pic from our Nursery Group's one-year anniversary) If you are interested in joining this fantastic bunch of people, check out this page for some info on how to join. https://www.basscoastlandcare.org.au/nursery-group.html

20.01.2022 Shade. So important for all animals on farm! Not all of us have wind towers of course but a well planned shelterbelt can increase productivity of pasture, increase animal weight gains, provide pest controls by increasing biodiversity of birds and more. Plan for your next shelterbelt with help from Bass Coast Landcare Network. https://www.basscoastlandcare.org.au/expressionsofinterest.

19.01.2022 We love our local wildlife, but the wallabies can certainly cause some issues when they munch on freshly planted seedlings! Check out these metal cells which have been set up in the Outtrim Reserve to protect the newest batch of seedlings.

18.01.2022 Abororist for forests initiative has just signed up Arborzone. Peter Bateman with Dave Bateman no relation. Big thanks to Arborzone for supporting Landcare to plant more trees. If you're interested in being part of this initiative please send us a DM.

18.01.2022 Camera traps are useful tools we have for non-invasive monitoring of both native and feral wildlife. But sometimes, they can just give us some great photos - like this sunset over the South Gippsland hills.

18.01.2022 Kongwak Hills Landcare Group has recently improved the visitor experience to the Kongwak Pioneer Reserve, with assistance from Mick Green at Drift Media. The GeoTour experience has been upgraded so that the tour and all of its audio content can now be enjoyed together with Google Earth maps of each track within the Reserve. It also provides track length/distance and elevation details with profiles in graphical display. A special QR Code has also been designed, so that visitor...s to the reserve can simply scan the code with their mobile, which will automatically take them to the Kongwak Hills Landcare webpage, where the GeoTours, Google Earth maps and Track Maps can be downloaded. Well done to the Kongwak Hills Landcare Group for getting this all happening! Click below for more information. https://www.basscoastlandcare.org.au//kongwak-hills-landca See more

18.01.2022 If you are thinking about planting out a shelterbelt, waterway, or even a nice windbreak to protect your house from these icy blasts, the time to place an order for plants is now! Locally native plants are hardy, well-suited to the area, and their flowers attract bees, birds, and insects. The volunteers at the Bass Coast Landcare Network Nursery will begin sowing seeds in the next couple of months, so to avoid missing out please place your order at the link below; www.basscoastlandcare.org.au/nursery-group.html

16.01.2022 Be a part of the fight against invasive animals in Australia and download the FeralScan App. This is a great community recording and management tool for pest animals. Within this app you can record pest animal activity in your area, including activity of species such as rabbits, deers, cats, and foxes. You can also use this app as part of your own control program. Use it to document control actions, location of rabbit warrens, location of fox dens etc. https://www.feralscan.org.au/

16.01.2022 This winter we have been active along the Western Port coastline; controlling pest plants and animals, planting mangroves to stabilise coastal erosion and developing buffer zones between agriculture and coastal Ramsar sites through revegetation. For any advice/support in protecting your neighboring coastline, please feel free to drop us a message! This project was implemented with the support of Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority.

14.01.2022 An amazing foray into the world of Fungi with Alison Pouliot! Some of our Landcare members in Bass Coast have been lucky enough to attend Alison's expert workshops on finding and identifying fungi in the past, and we hope to get her back for more in the future. For now though check out this video full of her incredible environmental photography and hear her unique insight into all things fungi and how our natural world wouldn't be there without it

14.01.2022 This week, we are shining the spotlight on a well-known feral animal the fox. The European fox is abundant across most of Australia and we pick up images of foxes on most of our camera traps in the Bass Coast and surrounds. This image of a fox with a magpie was picked up recently on one of our cameras as part of the Anderson Inlet VLG grant funding from the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority. Foxes are a threat to many of our native mammal, bird, and reptile species, as well as being a threat to livestock. Our Pest Animal and Plant team work on several projects to continue to reduce fox numbers and their impacts. Need some more info on what to do about foxes on your property? Check out our webpage https://www.basscoastlandcare.org.au/controlling-foxes.html

13.01.2022 Paul Speirs has been doing landcare works on his property for over 30 years. Paul was a founding member of the Archies Creek Reforrestation group. When moving to his Archies Creek property with his family, the property was totally depleted of vegetation and the waterway was weedy and heavily degraded. 30 years on, with many tens of thousands of plants established, the revegetation areas are naturally regenerating new plants, the water is much cleaner and the birds and wildlife are prolific. With the support of Bass Coast Landcare Network, Paul constantly engages groups and individuals showing them the benefits of riparian restoration works with real life dynamic examples.

08.01.2022 We are proud to announce the formation of our new partnership with Bass Coast Tree Care, under our 'Arborists For Forests' (AFF) Initiative! The AFF Initiative provides an opportunity for arboriculture businesses to reduce their carbon footprint and make a positive contribution to the local environment and their community. For every tree removed by Bass Coast Tree Care, a minimum of 2 indigenous plants will be planted in the Bass Coast (up to 10, depending on the size/age br...acket of the tree removed). Based on the average carbon sequestration rates for a tree on the Bass Coast, the plants will sequester roughly twice as much carbon as the tree that was removed over a period of 10 years. The initiative aims to provide peace of mind to both, the business and the client, by creating a more sustainable world for future generations. Tag your arborist friends on here so we can get more companies on board and more trees in the ground! https://www.basscoastlandcare.org.au/aff.html

06.01.2022 We were privileged to be able to assist Helen and the late John Clarke, famed for his satirical comedy on the ABC, with their work to restore their Rhyll property on Phillip Island, now donated by Helen to Trust For Nature. The land is part of the unique, richly biodiverse Rhyll Inlet, which is one of the most significant sites for migratory birds in Australia and recognised as a globally significant wetland under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Fantastic to see that Trust for Nature will now be continuing the important work of rehabilitating this land and incorporating traditional owner knowledge.
