06.01.2022 In September 2018, Typhoon Ompong (known internationally as Typhoon Mangkhut), made landfall on the northern coast of the Philippines. About 5.7 million people ...nationwide were affected by the storm, and nearly 3,000 schools were either mostly or completely damaged by the heavy winds and rain, Philippine government officials reported. To alleviate the situation for children and teachers in some of the barangays (villages) most devastated by the storm, UNICEF Philippines donated 24 boxes of early childhood care and development supplies and more than 400 student kits. UNICEF also set up several tents that would serve as temporary classrooms while schools were being rebuilt. As of December 2018, about 1,200 preschool and elementary school children were able to continue learning thanks to UNICEF’s efforts.
