25.01.2022 From the recent Talking Machines Project

25.01.2022 Have been awarded a Community Strengthening Grant of $1955 from Snowy Valleys Council to go towards the purchase of insulation for our storage shed. The insulation has been ordered and we will install once delivered. The insulation is to create an ideal environment for the storage of historical documents and fabrics. Also ordered is Retroseal Rodent Protection to keep the pesky rodents out.

23.01.2022 RIP Bill Nicholes senior and Junior, my uncle and cousin. Young Bill sent this load of apples to the Melbourne market, and later got a phone call to say the fru...it was down graded and a lesser price was offered, Bill slammed the phone down and was at the market office, inside 5 hours, and was banging on the office desk, he got top price for the fruit. He later bulldozed his Willigobung orchard and invited the Melbourne market manager up to inspect the orchard. On arrival he was angry to see no orchard. Bill replied where even you made me go to Melbourne without reason. Last Saturday marked the end of an era, from the first soldier settler circa 1950, to the clearing sale, 67 years on. See more

22.01.2022 I would have thought road rules were enforced to promote safety. I am wrong. Recently police did a blitz in Batlow booking people who for the purpose of road ...safety parked on the footpath. I have measured the footpath and the width of the road where one of these bookings took place. The footpath was 4.7 metres wide. The road one of the wider ones in Batlow was 9.1 metres wide. If two vehicles were parked opposite each other on the road there would be only 600mm each side of a 1.95 metre wide vehicle to pass safely. This compares to 2.75 metres for a 600mm wide person to negotiate a vehicle parked on the footpath which is only a strip of grass. It is time common sense prevailed in the police force when administering the law. Or is it revenue grabbing? But the police can book many more people in Batlow who park on the road outside their homes because If the road does not have a continuous dividing line or a dividing strip, you must position your vehicle so there is at least 3 metres on the road alongside the vehicle that is clear for other vehicles to pass. Most roads are not wide enough in Batlow for vehicles to park opposite each other. Who could be booked? How would the police know who parked parked first? Or would they book vehicles on both sides? 19.01.2022 Our Museum Advisor Dr Annette Brown has just visited and bought back photographs of Stanthorpe Heritage Museum. Their museum has many similar but unique themes to ours. We both have a Land Army collection, Soldier Settlement Records, Apple Blossom Festival/Week, Red Cross and of course the Apple Industry. Their collection features over 20,000 items and is housed in 15 buildings, something to be proud of for a town of under 5500 people

19.01.2022 Kinchant Dam - the ultimate place to catch a monster Metre barra are big. A 120cm barra is the fish of the lifetime. Over 130cm and things are getting crazy! ... Kinchant is the land of monsters, as the recent ABT round and John Campbell's 137cm ABT record fish can attest. And it's far from the only fish of this class to come from the dam. Who can forget Willem Reichard's line-class world record beast weighing in at 41.5kg at 135cm and had a girth of 106cm! That fish broke Facebook when it was first posted and many people called it for a Nile perch. It's not. It was weighed in right here in Mackay at Nashy's Compleat Angler. Monster tip - you don't need massive, ultra-heavy gear to tangle with these fish. They are old, smart and crafty, but their fitness isn't great. Beat the first few powerful runs and you have a good chance - if you can safely lift them aboard. #monsterhunting #KinchantDam #HookedonMackay See more

07.01.2022 Where bureaucracy defeats common sense. This ramp was provided at a door that is used one day per week. There is no ramp at the door that's used every day. Well done to those who organised this.

06.01.2022 Here is a mate for Batlow's Brigade

04.01.2022 Batlow Historical Society is actually located at 12 Tumbarumba Road Batlow. The maps Facebook use incorrectly show it as Batlow Road.

03.01.2022 Have just been awarded a grant for shelving that will enable us to start organising our collection once we have passed our final building inspection. The inspection depends on us installing a new roadway entrance. We have a quote of from Snowy Works and Services of $6500 to do this and the quote is about to be accepted once we put in a road opening permit to council.

01.01.2022 At last we can erect disabled toilets at Batlow Museum. We have been successful with this year's NSW Government's 'Community Building Partnership' grant application
