22.01.2022 Did you know? A mid-shaft fracture of the Ulna is called a night stick fracture. Apparently U.S police used to carry a longer baton at night for greater protection, which was called a night stick. If someone is attempting to protect themselves from a blow from a night stick, they raise their arms in front of them making the ulna more likely to be struck. The result was often a fracture like the one seen here.

21.01.2022 After months of planning and hard work, our new rooms are complete and open for business. Thanks to my wonderful kids, my friend Steph and staff, especially Jamison MacDonald for their efforts this weekend. It was a massive task moving an entire practice in one weekend but we did it. Thanks team !

21.01.2022 Now this is determination! At 92 years old, our client Beryl is not going to let a fracture of her right 5th metacarpal stop her from doing what she loves. She has worked out she can still play without the use of the affected finger even with her splint on!

20.01.2022 To all Valued Clients, Bayside Hand Therapy is remaining open at this stage, in line with advice from the Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt and our governing body the Australian Hand Therapy Association (AHTA). In order to minimise risk to our clients and staff, all clinical and admin staff will be wearing face masks. We have removed all magazines and other items which may be easily contaminated from the waiting area, seating has been arranged to ensure appropriate dista...ncing in the waiting area and treatment room, and all touch points are being disinfected after each appointment. We are staggering appointments so only one person will be treated at a time. We will also be offering online consultations for patients who would prefer to be treated via video link from home where the condition allows. Please keep in mind that if you are displaying flu like symptoms or have recently returned from overseas, we ask that you notify our staff so we can reschedule your appointment or look into setting you up with a video consultation. We thank you for your understanding at this time and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

20.01.2022 Extra safety measures were put in place this week with the addition of a perspex screen between therapist and patient. We feel a bit like bank tellers but the move has been very well received by our patients.

20.01.2022 As hand therapists we sometimes use our splint making skills to help our patients achieve their goals. This is a hand writing device made by Melissa to enable a patient with insufficient to grip to be able to write

19.01.2022 We are super excited to announce that Bayside Hand Therapy will be moving to new larger rooms in the next few weeks. Our new rooms will be located at the Wynnum Wellness Centre, just across the road from our current clinic. We are looking forward to providing our clients with the best possible care in our new facilities.

17.01.2022 This is the highest grip strength we have ever seen at Bayside Hand Therapy. 90kg with this patients non-dominant hand! Wonder what his grip strength was in his dominant hand before his injury?

14.01.2022 This weekend I had the privilege of learning from this amazing hand surgeon, Elisabet Haggert from Sweden. Thanks to Christina Harwood and the AHTA conference committee for organising what is probably the best AHTA conference I have attended.

11.01.2022 Week one of the fitout of our new rooms is complete. We now have floors and walls! We are on track for completion by 7th February.

10.01.2022 How is this for durability! I made this leather splint for a client almost 10 years ago. He has worn it daily since then and apart from replacing the velcro straps once during that time, it looks set to last him another 10 years

09.01.2022 It's heating up here in Queensland so just a reminder that hot cars are not only dangerous to children and pets but also to splints!

08.01.2022 This jerking action of a finger is caused by swelling on a tendon, catching on a fibrous pulley in the palm, as you attempt to straighten the finger. It can be treated by wearing a small custom-made splint to allow the swelling on the tendon to settle. The results are always better if treated earlier - so don’t keep putting up with this annoying condition! Contact us at Bayside Hand Therapy for more information. https://baysidehandtherapy.com.au

08.01.2022 Today we said farewell to Brittany, an occupational therapy student from South Africa who has been on clinical placement with us. Best of luck with the rest of your degree Brittany!

06.01.2022 With surgical masks in short supply fabric masks have been shown to be effective. All of our staff are wearing masks. We have extra masks available for purchase in a variety of colours and patterns if anyone is interested.
