25.01.2022 Foot and ankle pain. This may not be something you would think to see your Osteopath for, but Osteopaths are trained to take a thorough history, clinical examination and manage foot and ankle pain. Common conditions we see in the foot and ankle often result from overuse or an acute injury. Such conditions include:... Ligament sprains or tears Achilles tendinopathy Plantar fasciitis and heel pain Arthritis, joint pain and swelling Osteopaths use a wide range of techniques to work through the soft tissues and joints in the foot and ankle and will assess the knee, hip and low back to see if they may be contributing to your pain. Strength exercises and stretches are often prescribed and your Osteopath may tape or provide advice on footwear. We also work closely with our local podiatrists and GPs, so will refer on if we feel necessary. If your suffering from foot and ankle pain please call us for more information on 5977-0466 or book online at www.baysideosteoclinic.com.au #osteopathy #baysideosteopathy #boc #morington #morningtonpeninsula #footpain #anklepain #plantarfascitis #achillestendinopathy #arthritis

25.01.2022 This week is Osteopathy Healthcare Week. No matter who you are or where you live, if youre in pain or discomfort, your Osteopath may be able to assist you. Osteopaths are trained to evaluate whole-body health, diagnose and offer a range of clinical assessments, hands-on techniques, education and support tailored to your needs. To raise awareness of what we do as Osteopaths and how we can help manage your pain we will be posting some interesting stats and information all this week!

24.01.2022 With that glorious sun shining today, you might be out there enjoying it with some exercise. One thing we have found over the past few months with gyms and exercise classes being closed is an increase in the number of patients that have turned to or increased their running. Whilst running is fantastic, if you are one of those people that has suddenly gone from zero to hero, and by that we mean a sudden increase in your training load (distance, time, frequency), injuries can o...ccur. Those injuries you may be susceptible to are tendon injuries of the lower limb; foot, ankle, knee or hip pain, or even low back pain. Lucky for you, Osteopaths are trained to diagnose, manage and treat a broad range of these conditions and give you advice on injury avoidance and management. If youve sustained an injury, or fit in to the category of zero to hero and would like some advice, book in with one of our Osteopaths on 5977-0466, or online at www.baysideosteoclinic.com.au. #running #injurymanagement #prevention #exercise #lowerlimbrehab #baysideosteo #baysideosteopathicclinic #boc #morningtonpeninsula #mornington See more

24.01.2022 Keeping any injured joint moving is key to helping your body restore its natural function. Why not try these gentle shoulder exercises if you have shoulder discomfort; 1. Shoulder rolls 2. Small arm circles (below shoulder height) 3. Internal & external shoulder rotation (elbows by your side)... 4. Gentle pec/chest stretch Make sure to check with your individual Osteopath if these exercises are new to you as they may not suit your specific condition. Please stop any exercise that causes you pain. Keep moving to keep your body happy!!

22.01.2022 Have you tried all your home self-management strategies for your low back and still feeling like you need some more idea. Why not try these few simple exercises to get your back moving better. You can do these in bed or on the floor. Make sure you consult your individual Osteopath prior to trying any new exercise as these may not be right for you. Ensure you cease any exercise that causes you pain.

22.01.2022 Following on from our post last week about headaches, migraines and neck pain. They can be very debilitating but often can be managed with treatment to the upper back, neck and jaw. If you suffer from headaches or migraines, call us on 5977-0466 to chat to one of our Osteopaths and see if we can help.

22.01.2022 A big thank you to all our patients over this past week who have adapted to our new policies. Telehealth has become a regular in the clinic and our Osteopaths have continued to provide our patients with great advice and management despite not seeing you in the clinic! We are going to start a series of post of some common injuries you might encounter and ways you can manage them at home. Today we will start with a big one, low back pain. It is estimated around 80% of Australi...ans will experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. The good news is there is lots of ways to help manage your back pain, and one of the biggest ways is keeping active. Even if your pain is severe, slow and gentle movements are better than lying down. Luckily through a thorough case history, which at this time might be over the phone or computer, your Osteopath can advise you of the best early management strategies and exercises to help get you moving in those early stages of pain. Bayside Osteopathic Clinic is still open Monday to Saturday with an Osteopath in the clinic to take your calls and manage your condition. Please call us on 5977-0466 if you have an acute injury or need some advice managing your injury. #baysideosteopathicclinic #boc #baysideosteo #mornington #lowbackpain #osteopathy #telehealth #painmanagement

20.01.2022 Osteoarthritis. It’s a word many of you have heard of and may have even been told: your pain is from osteoarthritis, it’s just part of getting older so you have to deal with it. Incorrect!! Osteoarthritis doesn’t have to mean pain. There are many options to help manage osteoarthritis and seeing your Osteopath is one of them. Whether it’s hands on treatment, advice on activity modification or an exercise program, Osteopaths can often help reduce pain relief medication or del...ay/prevent the need for surgery. Whilst we are under Stage 4 restrictions you may not be able to see an Osteopath face to face but please call Bayside Osteopathic Clinic on 5977-0466 as we have Telehealth options available to get your management plan started. #osteopathy #baysideosteopathicclinic #baysideosteo #boc #osteoarthritis #oa #painmanagement #exerciseismedicine #mornington #morningtonpeninsula

19.01.2022 Shoulder injuries can affect any age group & can be due to a direct trauma or from long term wear. We dont realise how much we need the full range of our arm movement until we injure one and they can inhibit a lot of our normal daily activities. Did you know that as a structure, shoulders are quite unstable, so rely heavily on all the surrounding muscles for stability. This means that the muscles of our shoulders can easily fatigue & injure with poor or overuse. Two of the m...ost common shoulder issues that we treat as Osteopaths are, tendon injuries to our rotator cuff muscles (the group of muscles that give our shoulder stability) AND impingement issues where structures, usually at the front of the shoulder can become compromised. Did you know that shoulder problems can also present as pain all the way down your arm even at your hand or up into your neck & may be the cause of headaches? Shoulder problems can also sometimes affect our ability to sleep comfortably especially if you are a side sleeper. Luckily, like a lot of musculoskeletal problems there are lots of ways that you can help to self-manage these injuries at home & long term exercise rehabilitation is the best way to prevent them occurring again. Stay tuned for more tips during the week on home care for shoulder problems! For more advice specific to you, give us a call at Bayside Osteopathic Clinic on 5977 0466. www.baysideosteoclinic.com.au

18.01.2022 Having a case of acute low back pain is never fun, and particularly at the moment when you may not be able to see your normal Osteopath. But did you know that sometimes when back pain is really acute, hands on treatment isnt always the best thing, as it needs time to settle. In the meantime there are lots of simple things you can do at home to help yourself get better.... 1. Keep moving- if you are able to, try to keep moving around slowly, small walks, getting up and down r...ather than sitting for prolonged periods and trying to do your normal daily tasks is the best way to help your low back. 2. Rest if you need- moving around is great to do however it is also okay to rest if needed & find a position of comfort, just try not to stay still for too long. 3. Try some heat- sometimes using a heat pack, hot water bottle, taking a warm shower or using something topical such as Fisiocream/Deep Heat can help to ease muscle tension around the injury & make you feel like you can move better. 4. Do your exercises- if you have pre-existing exercises & can perform them pain free, keep up any exercises you have been given for your back. And MOST IMPORTANTLY...... 5. Try NOT to panic- episodes of acute back pain can be scary & can feel like they take a while to improve. Worrying can add to muscle tension & can also make pain levels feel higher. If you can, try to do things that relax you. Our brains are only geared to concentrate on so many things at once, so doing something that triggers the pleasure centres in our brains can help downgrade our pain response! Rest assured that in a large number of cases back pain can be well managed, pain levels will decrease & you will be able to go back to doing all the things you enjoy soon! #baysideosteopathicclinic #keepmoving #StayPositive #exerciseismedicine

17.01.2022 Dry Needling! Dry needling is a technique that involves the insertion of a very fine needle in to a muscular trigger point or connective tissue to help minimise peripheral nociception (pain) and improve or regulate structural or functional damage. That might sound pretty complex but to summarise its used to help with pain relief and improve joint range of motion. Dry needling can be used to aid in the treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal conditions from neck pain and he...adaches to tendon injuries such as tennis elbow or Achilles tendinopathy. We have multiple Osteopaths in our clinic that use dry needling as one of their treatment approaches so if youve been thinking about it or would like more information head to our website at www.baysideosteoclinic.com.au (link in bio) or call the clinic on 5977-0466. #dryneedling #musclepain #jointpain #tendonopathy #baysideosteoclinic #baysideosteo #boc #mornington #morningtonpeninsula See more

16.01.2022 Following on from last weeks post on how Osteopathy may help you during your pregnancy.... Now you have a little one on your hands, did you know that Osteopaths may have a role to play in the management of a range of conditions affecting babies especially if there is a possible musculoskeletal component to the problem? Treating babies using manual therapies is undeniably contentious, and certainly there is very little good quality research into the use of manual therapies suc...h as Osteopathy on infants. However, in cases where medical tests have indicated no serious underlying conditions, many mothers do seek Osteopathic treatment for their babies. The types of conditions for which mothers often seek treatment include: Feeding difficulties, especially if related to head and jaw compression during birth Neck issues that cause babies to prefer one side, or have flat spots on their skull General unsettledness and irritability Colic/bowel problems caused by disturbed function, not disease ’Reflux related to spasm in the muscle wall of the gut We treat babies using only the lightest of Osteopathic techniques, and there are very few documented cases of any significant risks or adverse effects associated with this type of treatment. If a baby is more comfy, they can be treated in a parents arms or whilst feeding. Babies tend to enjoy getting treated and quite often fall asleep while being worked on! If you have any questions, we are happy to discuss whether Osteopathy may be of benefit, and our Osteopaths are very happy to liaise and work collaboratively with GPs, midwives and maternal health nurses to obtain the best results for mothers and babies. At Bayside Osteopathic Clinic Dr Khali Williams and Dr Kate Murphy have a particular interest on treating babies and have undertaken further study in this area. 13.01.2022 If you are unable to see your Osteopath for treatment, did you know there are lots of things you can do to help your shoulder pain at home? The best thing you can do for your shoulder is to identify any movements or daily tasks that aggravate it & see if you can alter or avoid the activity. Here are some examples;... - if you reach for things often at your work desk, bring them closer to avoid reaching. Make sure to take plenty of breaks from using your computer. - when in the car, try to turn your whole body to grab your seat belt. Try not to put bags in the back seat & reach for them, have them close by. - try to avoid prolonged overhead activities where possible, e.g. blow drying hair, hanging washing overhead, reaching for things in the pantry etc. Try to take tops off with arms below shoulder height. - girls, if you are getting pain from doing up bras, try doing them up in front first to avoid painful reaching behind. - if you have to carry heavy loads, try to carry them with both arms for short periods or make use of a helper while your shoulder is sore. Sometimes it is difficult to avoid our daily activities so do the best you can. If you find your shoulder is still sore, use some heat over the area, do any exercises you have been prescribed & try to keep your arm moving as normally as possible, whilst also giving it time to rest! Try all these strategies & hopefully your shoulder will be moving better in no time!

13.01.2022 Good news! While we are not quite back to normal just yet, from the 28 September, Osteopaths can resume face-to-face appointments for non-urgent patients who are in pain or need management of their condition to prevent further deterioration or increased care in the future. If you would like to make an appointment please call us on 5977-0466 or visit our websit...e baysideosteoclinic.com.au as we have reopened our online booking system. If you are unsure as to whether you should seek treatment, please call reception and we can organise a practitioner to call you and discuss further. We will also be reopening our Pilates studio for 1:1 Pilates and exercise rehabilitation for patients who require further management as per the guidelines above. Our group classes remain closed. We look foreword to seeing a lot more of you back in the clinic! #baysideosteopathicclinic #boc #baysideosteo #mornington #morningtonpeninsula

13.01.2022 Many women who undergo treatment for breast cancer will experience pain at some stage. Some of the reasons for pain can be: muscle and joint pain secondary to breast cancer drugs breast cancer surgery including mastectomy, reconstruction and scar tissue lymphoedema... Osteopaths can help manage these pains with gentle treatment to the musculoskeletal system, lymphatic drainage techniques, and prescribe gentle exercises to help support the body during or after treatment. As always discussing with your specialist what treatment is appropriate during certain stages of your care is essential before commencing any new treatment or exercise program. 11.01.2022 As an Osteopath, headaches are one of our most rewarding things to help people with as they can really interfere with your day & just make you feel miserable. So its wonderful to be able to help alleviate them. However there are lots of things you can do at home to prevent headaches even starting and ease them when they come on; Good work set up... - if you are a desk worker, make sure your desk set up is ideal for you (check out our video on home desk set up for more tips) to avoid causing strain to your neck muscles. - take plenty of breaks, aim for one every 45mins-1hr at least. - try to avoid eye strain by lighting your work space appropriately & making sure the brightness settings on your screen are suitable. Also if you have glasses or havent had an eye test recently make sure your prescription is up to date & you are not suffering from an undiagnosed eye issue. Tight neck muscles - why not try using a heat pack periodically through the day to release tension. - try performing some gentle neck stretches (our shoulder exercise videos are great for this!) or doing some self massage with a ball or foam roller. Stress Induced - these are tricky to deal with especially at the moment. But why not try some stress release techniques such as a quick meditation or mindfulness exercise on an app like Smiling Mind (https://www.smilingmind.com.au). - recognise when you might need to step away from something and take some time out. This is hard when we have kids or people we need to care for or work tasks that need to be done, however taking 5mins away to listen to our favourite piece of music or popping outside for some fresh air or just being easier with ourselves & relaxing can actually make you more productive & everyone happier. Doing something that makes us happy even for a few minutes increases our happy hormone levels which also help to counteract the chemicals in our brain that cause pain, hopefully easing your headache!

10.01.2022 Phew! Its been another long week in Melbourne doing work, home schooling, working from home & trying to make the most of being stuck inside. If youre feeling a little worse for wear why not give yourself a mini massage with a spiky ball, its a great way to release off tight muscles!

08.01.2022 Lets talk mental health, something we all need to be aware of right now. While it might feel like we dont have control of the current events surrounding Covid-19 and being in lockdown, its important to remember that we can do many things to feel empowered and enabled. 05.01.2022 Phew! It's been another long week in Melbourne doing work, home schooling, working from home & trying to make the most of being stuck inside. If you're feeling a little worse for wear why not give yourself a mini massage with a spiky ball, it's a great way to release off tight muscles!

04.01.2022 Pain. A recent study conducted by Osteopathy Australia found that pain medication is the most preferred treatment for Australians in pain, with over almost two thirds (60%) reaching for pain relief medication. One in two (50%) admit their pain has stopped them from exercising. 43% admit that their pain has impacted their sleep and pain has stopped 18% from working. And only a quarter (25%) of those currently seeking treatment for pain have seen an Osteopath while two thirds... (69%) prefer to manage their pain with medication. We understand that pain medication has its place but there are a lot of management strategies that can also help with your pain. A visit to your Osteopath offers more than just hands on treatment. Osteopaths can also give advice on ergonomics at your workplace and home, stretches and exercise guidance, lifestyle modifications and mindfulness. *The research was conducted by PureProfile on a representative sample of 1,008 Australians 18 year and older. The survey was conducted on behalf of Osteopathy Australia in February 2020. #chronicpain #osteopathy #wholistic #boc #baysideosteopathicclinic #baysideosteopathy

03.01.2022 This year we are supporting a great local charity, Mums Supporting Families In Need (MSFIN). They are a fully non for profit volunteer run charity, assisting Victoria’s most disadvantaged families with their material aid needs. Whilst we have left our run a bit late this year, there is still time for us to make a difference. We are collecting gifts or cash donations, with all cash donations being matched by Bayside Osteopathic Clinic, and we will purchase gifts for you. We know it’s been a tough year for everyone but a small amount of money can go a long way. See above photos of best buys under $5 and $10. The greatest need for gifts right now are for those children aged 10+. If you would like to contribute, please do by Saturday 12th December. Thank you!

You don’t need to be an expert to reach out just a good friend and a great listener. This year though the aim is to help people take that next step say so you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life.
