25.01.2022 Last week, BBIFMAC staff joined Dr Ryan Turner, Principle Scientist, Water Quality and DES staff to complete the installation of several water quality sensors in various creeks within the Burdekin district. These equipment installs are part the Telstra Bluespot project, an ongoing project in collaboration with DES, DNRME, Telstra and Intellidesign. The project aims to establish the effectiveness of installing water quality sensors in creeks and bores, using the new Telstra IOT network to provide a real-time insight into measurements of water quality. BBIFMAC's role in the project is to conduct the site installations and maintenance for the 43 Bluespot sites in the Burdekin.

22.01.2022 We all know cane growers and irrigators work around the clock, and often over the weekend! The same can be said for our BBIFMAC staff who often have to collect water samples on the weekend! All part & parcel of the job!
22.01.2022 A flashback to earlier in the year when a friendly frog visited one of our sampling sites after the rain. Here's hoping we get some rainfall again soon!

12.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon, the Burdekin Cane Extention Group (BCEG) hosted an end of year celebration for all partnering organisations. It was fantastic to hear from all the organisations about their greatest achievements for 2020, followed by a fun trivia session hosted by Anthony Curro, SRA and Rob Milla, BPS.
08.01.2022 After much success in the first-year trials, larger scale black sesame crops were planted yesterday at two locations in the region for the second-year trials. The black sesame crop is part of the NQ Spice Trial being undertaken with CQ University, and funded by the CRCNA. The aim of these trials are to evaluate the suitability for future commercialisation of spice and condiment crops in Northern Australia. We look forward to updating you on the outcomes as the black sesame crop progresses.

05.01.2022 I think it's safe to say that water sampling season is well underway! A rather large shipment of samples are being sent to the laboratory for analysis today.
04.01.2022 The first year of sampling and reporting has been completed for the BRIA Barratta Creek Water Quality Project, and the project team have developed a ‘Year 1 Project Learnings Fact Sheet’ to concisely communicate the initial learnings. Whilst it is too early to draw definitive conclusions about the relative merits of each of the farming practices being trialled, the year 1 preliminary results have highlighted some important points about field trials, and drivers of nutrient and pesticide loss during both irrigation and rainfall events. Looking forward to sharing more detail once the second year is complete and we (hopefully!) have some definitive trends emerging.
02.01.2022 The KP automatic water sampler in action!
