22.01.2022 SCAM ALERT! Did we call you on your cell phone? Answer probably not Theres a new version of an old tax scam doing the rounds, but guess what scammers, were... exposing your secrets: - First, theyll call with an automated message saying theyre from the tax department saying youre being audited. - Youll be asked to select an option to be put through an operator (*cough scammer*) who says you owe a tax debt. - If you question the caller or hang up, youll likely receive a call back about 30 mins later which appears to come from an AFP phone number in Sydney. (For all you detectives, it looks like us. BUT ITS NOT, the scammers are just imitating our switchboard). - An AFP Federal Officer will then claim youll be arrested unless you pay the fine. DO NOT PAY! Remember - the AFP will NEVER request payment of fines or other monies over the phone. If you believe you or someone you know might be a scam victim, or have any information, you can report it through SCAMwatch (www.scamwatch.gov.au) or your local police.

20.01.2022 A client called to tell us something interesting today. Apparently if you move to a new house and cant take your existing exchange number (moving from Wodonga to Thurgoona for example) and you get connected through the NBN you wont have an identifiably local number, such as 02 6040 xxxx or 02 6041 xxxx youll be issued with a number according to your capital city. Her number for Thurgoona is now 02 9XXX XXXX. So if youre getting a lot of calls from numbers that look like Melbourne or Sydney, they might be local instead. #thisisprogress

16.01.2022 What standard deductions can you claim? Correct Answer: None. There is no such thing. You must have incurred an expense and the expense must be directly connected to your income earning activity. One of the most frustrating things for good tax agents and accountants is hearing about deductions someone else claimed and having to explain that even though your friend or their accountant claimed it, they shouldnt have and its wrong. ... This year, the ATO expects to undertake over one million interactions with taxpayers and tax agents claiming work-related expenses to close the $8.7 billion gap beween what people should have paid in tax and what they did pay. Good news for those of us doing it right! https://www.ato.gov.au//Individuals-tax-gap-of-$8-7-billi/

05.01.2022 Single Touch Payroll - are you prepared? There are new mandatory salary and super reporting requirements which commenced on 1 July 2018. Single Touch Payroll (STP) is a government initiative that will change the way you report on your payroll to the ATO from 1 July 2018.... Under STP, businesses are required to report on salary or wages, pay as you go (PAYG) withholding and superannuation directly to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), electronically, and at the same time as their employees are paid. This new streamlined reporting to the ATO will make it easier for employers to meet payroll processing obligations, and employees to view their information and lodge annual tax returns. To help you understand how Single Touch Payroll works and get your business and employees ready for these changes, read the Single Touch Payroll Guides. Our extraordinary team are here to help you. Please ring us on 02 6049 4200, email [email protected] or send us a direct message through Facebook for help in reviewing your software and payroll processes. We love helping you make smarter decisions now, so you can have a beautiful future!
