13.01.2022 Unresolved trauma, anxiety or feeling out of control can manifest in uncontrollable outbursts in children. Child Centred Play Therapy provides a safe, permissive space for children to express and explore these feelings without fear of judgement. Check out www.bemeplaytherapy.com.au to find out how CCPT could help your child.
10.01.2022 Stages of Child Centred Play Therapy Stage Three Regressive Stage or Dependency Phase In this stage of the play therapy process children work on issues related to safety and protection concerns, grief and loss, nurturance, dependence/independence, attachment, identity, self-image/self-esteem, and other issues related to relationships with others. ... Children display a wide variety of behaviours in this stage; some focusing on nurturance behaviours such as cooking meals, caring for a baby or animal, holding a tea party or role play involving doctoring. During these role plays the child may be the giver or the receiver of the nurturance or alternate roles during play. Other children may exhibit increased dependency or regressive behaviours to help them to feel safe eg. pleading for the therapist to do things for them that in reality they are able to do for themselves. For some children the focus may be working through threats to attachment by engaging in role play involving protection and rescuing this can sometimes involve the child literally binding the therapist to themselves during play by using a piece of rope or by imprisoning the therapist and/or themselves using handcuffs. The child is keeping the therapist close. Some children may engage in some form of age regression. This may be expressed through their verbal communication such as tone of voice, vocabulary choice or pronunciation of words, or it may be seen in overt behaviours such as putting a bottle in their mouth, sucking their thumb, taking a nap or cuddling up with a blanket or soft toy while they engage in babbling/baby talk. The therapist facilitates the child’s progress by supporting the child to express their inner-self (thoughts, feelings/emotions and beliefs) and engage in problem solving. Parents/carers may see some of these regressive behaviours expressed at home and become concerned that the child is going backwards, however it is important to remember that this is a normal part of the healing process and in fact, an opportune time for parents/carers to reinforce secure attachment with the child. The child in this stage is seeking closeness and security and looking for sensitive responsiveness from their caregivers. Parents can support their child by acknowledging the feeling/need being expressed and finding time to connect with the child in meaningful ways eg. playing together, cooking together, re-introducing bed time stories or perhaps just extra cuddle time.

06.01.2022 Stages of Child Centred Play Therapy Stage Two Aggressive Stage or Resistance Phase When a child feels secure enough in the therapeutic relationship and a stable foundation has been established, they will generally move from the warm up/exploratory stage into the second stage of the play therapy process - the aggressive/resistance stage. It is here that they begin working on the central therapeutic issues which underlie the behavioural symptoms being displayed at home and s...Continue reading
05.01.2022 An interesting read for parents struggling to get their child to school... Children experiencing school refusal often do so because their brain-body connections sense threat or danger, even when the child is physically safe. The child’s negative feelings result from the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, so she cannot simply talk herself out of her feelings... ...the aim when working with a child coping with school refusal is figuring out how to help the child’s nervous system to detect safety in the school setting.
