25.01.2022 Are you aiming to improve your defense? Lower your defensive ready position, and come to our clinic to learn the footwork and ball contact techniques you see displayed here: https://www.facebook.com/diveroftheday/

24.01.2022 Still wondering why we do all those one-handed warm up drills? Have a look at these techniques, in action, photos taken by our friend Ed Chan.

22.01.2022 Here's all the friendly folks from our March 3rd session, see y'all next week!

19.01.2022 Great video covering some important aspects of hitting with power, clearly explains the sequence, and makes want to use some other term besides "armswing" to describe the hitting motion, as it's not just the arm. I will add one thing to this, and that no matter how hard you can hit the ball, you are not going to hit through a skilled/properly positioned defensive player. Don't learn to just blast the ball, learn how to read or see the defense, and direct your attack (whether it's a spike or a pokie) to a place where the defense is not going to have a great chance at making a play off your attack.

18.01.2022 Here's just some of the folks from our Nov 11 session. Nice group of folks! (and COVID-spaced too, just like our sessions.)

17.01.2022 So, wondering why we always teach the tomahawk/taco? Comes in handy sometimes, have a look!

16.01.2022 Hi Folks, We only coach beach volleyball, not swamp volleyball, and all the rain has flooded the courts, so we've canceled tonight's (15 Sept) session. Sooner or later dry season will show up, hopefully before next week! Stay dry, stay safe, always have fun!

15.01.2022 Here's a former Beach Kamper (Martin Vavra) now doing the podium thing down at Coogee Beach! Way to go Martin!

15.01.2022 Hi Folks, The council has adopted the online sign up we created last week, unfortunately that means there's a new link you should bookmark in your phones, go here to signup, early signups get a hold placed on their place in the session till 5:30pm, after that your spot is given to someone waiting. Sessions are limited to 32 persons. http://cairns.qld.gov.au//beach-volleyball-esplanade-beach

11.01.2022 This is a great and clear explanation on how and when handset rules applied, Thanks Darren!. Darren's an experienced ref and player, and he know's what he's talking about. I'll just add two things. 1. In games apply this knowledge to your own game and don't worry about what others are/aren't doing, they are on their own journey through the game and and will learn as they go. 2. Practice, both the techniques, and learning when to use them. ... Sorry, there's a 3: and finally 3. If you are an beginner to intermediate pairs player and find yourself digging a lot of balls with your hands you are setting your defense too far up in the court. Intermediate players don't hit the ball hard into the front half of the court, if you play back you can dig with the more effective forearm pass dig, and you will still have time to make a play on any short shots they play. Already an advanced player? Well, come to the clinic sometime and I can go through some of the finer points of overhand digging techniques, and (on the dark arts side of things) what to look out for when your opponents start to complain to the ref about your or your partner's setting.

10.01.2022 Here's all the folks from last night's Beach Kamp Session, lots of fun, great weather!

10.01.2022 Today's challenge, use a dog playing volleyball to demonstrate good technique, that's easy. Think about ready position, then watch the dog. every time it's waiting for the ball it bends all four it's legs just a bit, stays still, then reacts to the flight of the ball after it comes off it's teammates arms. Now look at the dog's two teammates, Kiara is a great dog, but does not always direct the ball to the right place. Kiara's human teammates also drop into a bit more of a ready position with Kiara, anticipating they might have to chase a ball that's come off Kiara's nose a bit wrongly. Ready Position, wait, react, that defensive strategy will get you somewhere, whether you are a human or a dog.

10.01.2022 A whole lot of beach action is available online at the moment, here's the live feed of the King of The Beach tourney in Europe, just like we do at Beach Kamp! (except with pro layers instead of future pro players!) :)

07.01.2022 Some handy tips here, I'm only going to add two bits of perspective. Sin #4 "Flintsone Feet" These coaches are dead on about making the first step a crossover step, something we cover all the time at Beach Kamp. However, if you take two big steps to get under the ball, are not going to stretch or layout to contact the ball, then taking a small final adjustment step to square up to the ball and face your target...well, that's OK! Advanced players eliminate these steps with turning their hips and shoulders to make that adjustment instead of their feet, but I'm not so sure if that's a practiced technique, or something that comes as you gain experience and ball control. Anyway, take the big crossover step, get to the ball, and then, if you can, make that last tiny adjustment step to get into the proper position.

06.01.2022 If you are going to learn to jump serve, then 10 minutes spent watching this video will help you climb the learning curve, and save you time spent doing so. What I can add from the aged mere mortal perspective are these tips: 1. One of the first things Jeremy says is "I pretty much decided to jump serve every day" Yep, practice and repetition work. 2. Location, like Jeremy says, you need to be able to serve to the seams, away from the opposing players; make them move to get to the place where they pass the ball. Even if you give up a bit of speed, control and placement are way more important. (Oh and thanks guys for the vid!)

04.01.2022 Great rally, if you are thinking all those one-handed warm up drills we do at the clinic are for nothing then you really ought to have a look at this clip.

03.01.2022 Just one more example of why we do the one-handed contacts during warmups. Practiced them! Nice picture by Rogue Gun Photography, taken in at a state tour event this weekend.

02.01.2022 Hi Folks, an important announcement, Beach Kamp will not be operating until it's safe to do so. Stay home, stay safe, and help your friends and community do the same. I'll still post interesting beach volleyball-related things here. (All other Active Living programs have been suspended as well.) Once it's safe to conduct clinics again Luke, Brian and I will be out there again, believe me, I look forward to that day coming!

02.01.2022 There's a lot of truth and great tips in this video, especially if you are an indoor player looking to improve on the beach.

02.01.2022 We hate rainy Tuesdays, cuz that mushy pudding sand makes it impossible to play. Today (10 March) is one of those days, we are cancelling today's clinic, and hope to see a bright, shiny, and dry version of you next Tuesday!

01.01.2022 Hi folks, yep, Beach Kamp is back on as of tonight, the usual 5:30 start time. If you are feeling like you are not 100% healthy then please, keep all of us safe, stay home and get well. Due to COVID we are limiting the clinic to 32 participants on two courts.
