22.01.2022 Last week AMSAs Marine Casualty Officers (MCOs) took part in helicopter winch training with Careflight in Queensland. MCOs are AMSA marine surveyors provided ...with additional training to enable them to attend a maritime casualty at sea and act as the eyes and ears of responders back on shore. This can help prevent incidents like groundings and associated marine pollution events by ensuring the most effective response is launched as quickly as possible.

21.01.2022 A picture is worth a thousand words... We've all heard that it is crucial to check your safety equipment before each boating trip and espcially if you haven't b...een out on the water for some time. Our Hunter-based Senor Boating Safety Officer was approached by a boater yesterday who was shocked by the amount of corrosion on the cylinder of his lifejacket. He says he checked this last on 4 May when it was in perfect condition. Five months later after being stored on the vessel, the cylinder is rusted badly after suffering electrolysis. Safe boating everyone!

20.01.2022 Justin from AMSA's Queensland team visited Karumba on Monday to kick off a community and industry trial using personal floatation devices (PFD) and personal loc...ator beacons (PLB) within the local fishing fleet. This initiative is a result of recent safety management system and risk workshops and will hopefully provide feedback about these style of jackets and how they work and assist with individual and industry safety. 20 very keen participants have signed up for the trial and will wear the PFD's and provide feedback on how they worked with their operations.

10.01.2022 AMSA Search and Rescue officers conducted a Forward Field Base Exercise last week. A number of Search and Rescue Officers joined Search and Rescue Trainings Ro...d Verney and Gary Stevens to practice homing emergency beacons by hand. SAR Operations Manager Al Lloyd ran through how to set up equipment used in the event of a Forward Field Base being stood up. The group travelled to 4WD tracks near Tidbinbilla before testing satellite phones, had a demonstration of equipment to access the AMSA network while in the field and saw a drone in action. Forward Field Bases are sometimes setup by AMSA for search and rescue operations involving a large number of aircraft or ground personnel. Having AMSA officers deployed in the field can improve coordination and communication with search and rescue assets.

08.01.2022 AMSA Search and Rescue coordinated the rescue of 21 people in the Torres Strait on Monday, after their banana boats broke down on Tudu Island, north-east of Thu...rsday Island. The group was spotted by an aircraft and Search & Rescue officers tasked AMSA's Emergency Towage Vessel Coral Knight to respond. After a night on the uninhabited island the 21 people were embarked on board the Coral Knight and taken to a rendezvous point south of Saibai. From here the group were transferred to an Australian Border Force vessel and taken to Saibai Island, while the banana boats were towed by Coral Knight's work boat. It's a good reminder as to why you should have a registered distress beacon on board your vessel and to plan your voyage well, with all relevant safety equipment on hand.

06.01.2022 There's still time to have your say. Consultation closes 2 February 2018 on AMSA's proposal to mandate the use of float-free, auto-activating EPIRBs for certain... classes of commercial vessels. The use of these devices could in some cases alert search and rescue authorities more quickly when a vessel sinks or capsizes suddenly and the crew are unable to reach and activate a manual distress beacon. 04.01.2022 AMSA would like to thank the crew of the Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force vessel Nemesis and the crew of the container ship ANL Elanora for their help in ...the rescue of two people from a yacht off the NSW coast earlier today. The yacht had experienced rudder damage and was being battered by heavy seas when they activated their emergency beacon last night. RESCUE 660, one of AMSA's new Challenger 604 search and rescue jets, shot this video of the stricken yacht and the Nemesis while the jet monitored and provided a communications relay back to AMSA. The Nemesis travelled through the night in treacherous conditions to successfully rescue the two crew who were shaken up but unharmed. See more
