11.01.2022 My husband and I have never prescribed to the starving artist archetype and have never seen ourselves as controlled by an unfair system. We move, we pivot and... we celebrate. Sometimes things work and it’s pay day and sometimes it’s a joyful stepping stone, leading to new and exciting ventures. Social media and the internet really has provided a much more empowered position for artists. The old systems and structures, pathways and clubs are no longer required. In fact the artists that appear to be genuinely thriving are the ones that are able to be self-determined and forge their own paths. Working with a number of artists in my coaching business and closely watching many other artists careers, if I was to offer any advice at all I would say this; VALUE YOURSELF and the work you do. As artists it’s up to us to teach the rest of the world just how valuable we are - we create the artist economy. Every time we are paid fairly for our work, we contribute positively to the arts career culture. We help others down the line get paid appropriately for the work they do and ultimately this all contributes to the final goal of making a career in the arts as financially viable and sustaining. I think for many Artists, there is a huge distrust of money and subsequently this belief system plays out its own little game of poverty. At its core money is just an exchange of energy between two entities and the associated valuing of that. Seeing your art as worthy of that exchange is not greedy. My husband @jimmi_buscombe_artist gets asked to work for free frequently. These request often are made by people who are getting paid an hourly rate on a salary whilst they contact him or are running commercial businesses. These people pay for a whole range of subcontractors, so why would art be any different? No one expects the gardener, the cleaner or ironically a commercial house painter to do it for free. This is not say that the artist doesn’t have a significant part to play in philanthropic culture, but where the artist decides to gift their precious time and work is a deeply personal one that ultimately must provide enrichment to the artist also.
