23.01.2022 Diggers The garden of St Erth Blackwood on a very wet day. Worth getting wet to find green Santolina (Santolina rosemarinafolia). The green Santolina looks great planted next to the grey Santolina in large groups. #blackwood #diggers #sterth #santolinarosmarinifolia

21.01.2022 Pretty spring combination with colourful foliage from Acer palmatum and Eupatorium. #acerpalmatum #burgundyfoliage #Eupatorium #springgarden

20.01.2022 Lovely weekend in Daylesford. Great display of Hydrangea quercifolia, Viburnum and Acer in Wombat gardens. #daylesford #wombatgardens

20.01.2022 Spectacular drought tolerant perennial Lepechinia salviae flowering in late summer. Looks like a salvia but isn't. Sedum Matrona compliments Lepechinia and is also tough. #perennial #waterwise #droughttolerant #lepechinia

19.01.2022 Now is the time to enjoy the juvenile leaves of deciduous plants. Even the English Oak tree (Quercus robur) has the most stunning lime green leaves. These will darken as they age.

19.01.2022 #vouzy #Jardendemaely Enjoyed a wonderful tour of beautiful garden Jardin de Maelys from the owner, Andree Oudinet. The garden has a diverse selection of plant species and varieties and a large #salvia collection. Even with all of this variety the garden works well as a whole. Andree has designed the garden so it keeps revealing new secrets and provide bursts of colour or a great structural plant just at the right time. Visit this garden in the #champagne region.

18.01.2022 What a beautiful collection of Lavendula. Many plants are coming into the nurseries now. This makes it a great time to take your garden to the next level.

16.01.2022 Beschorneria yuccoides (Mexican Lily) is a drought and frost tolerant evergreen plant, which is sun loving and grows well in most soils and and is about 1m tall. I use it when I need something architectural. It's grey-green leaves and the tall flowers are striking. And unlike Agave, Beschorneria doesn't have spikes.

16.01.2022 Another wonderful Castlemaine garden we visited was Mica Grange at Sutton Grange. Much of the property is quite open, with good use made of existing rock, a great selection of metal artwork and uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside. To one side of the garden is an attractive and quite extensive working vegetable garden. The veranda at the front of house, where afternoon tea is served, is a great place to sit and just take in the stunning view. For me the highlight was the gardens surrounding the back of the house. Plant selection is excellent and the garden is well maintained. The Rose selection is particularly good and the limited number of varieties and restricted colour palette really works.

13.01.2022 What's Possible in the Garden. Part of my speech at Business Referrers on Tuesday.

13.01.2022 Do you want some wonderful autumn colour? Photos are Gingko, Acer palmatum and Hydrangea quercifolia in Canterbury, Melbourne.

12.01.2022 The people of Scott street Canterbury are putting on an amazing show.

11.01.2022 My Ginkgo biloba has dropped most of its golden leaves. Winter is a great time to check out your garden and plan for the warmer months. I am presenting a landscape design workshop for home owners to design their own gardens this Wednesday at Bowen Street Community Centre. http://www.bowenstreet.org.au/

05.01.2022 Castlemaine holds a festival of gardens every two years and had 22 gardens open this year. Mossbank was one of the highlights. The approach was through a cooling native garden with purple Alyogyne (Native Hibiscus) mixed seamlessly with plantings of grey and green leafed Santolina. Once through the arbour, it changed to a warm exotic garden show casing Roses, Cistus and Poppies. A common theme amongst gardens in the Castlemaine area was the use of drought tolerant plants incl...uding those with grey leaves such as Ballota, Artemesia, Marrubium supinum and Stachys byzantine (Lambs’ Ears). At the rear of the house I was met with a beautiful pink rose with a wonderful scent, Rosa ‘Mme Gregoire Stecklan’, climbing across the back veranda. And further towards the vegetable garden was a striking weeping single red Rosa ‘Altissimo’. As you entered the vegetable garden was a beautiful and perfectly built stone wall. The kitchen garden was a delightful mix of espaliered apples, roses, lavender and perennials with vegetables in raised circular beds and plenty of room to wander between them.

04.01.2022 How wonderful to see my favourite Viburnum in flower. Viburnum sargentii 'Onondaga' has stunning cerise and white lace cap flowers. The flowers contrast beautifully with the maroon leaves, which turn green in summer and to a reddish purple in autumn.

03.01.2022 Dogwood covered in delicate pink flowers at Wombat gardens Daylesford. #daylesford #wombatgardens #dogwood

02.01.2022 Parthenocissus tricuspidata commonly know as Boston Ivy is actually part of the grape family. Such a useful deciduous climber bringing both green and stunning autumn colour to the garden, only needing an existing wall to drape over. #Bostonivy #autumncolour #deciduousclimbingplant
