His classic debut - Closing Time (73) couldnt be more different from his later work but its still hard to nail down to one genre. It has elements of folk, country, jazz....The smoky bar vibe would carry over to - The Heart of Saturday Night (74) which would see him develop his downtrodden barfly persona accompanied with tales from the underbelly. After a series of albums on the... Asylum label, including fan favourites - Small Change (76) and - Heartattack and Vine (80), no one could have predicted his next move. The Island records debut - Swordfishtrombones (83) was more experimental in sound with mutant jazz and unconventional sounds, it is a remarkable album, its follow up Rain Dogs (85) doubled down on the eccentric formula, possibly bettering it. More weirdness followed with - Bone Machine (92) another innovative masterpiece. Following- The Black Rider (93) which featured collaborations with the Beat Generations William S. Burroughs, it would be 6 years before Tom returned, this time on the Epitaph label, one more accustomed to a punk/hardcore catalogue, although you could argue if Toms music was anything it was indeed hardcore!
