24.01.2022 #OTD: Australian Army Training Team Vietnam arrive in Vietnam On the 3rd of August 1962, the 15 officers and 15 senior NCOs that made up The Australian Army Tra...ining Team Vietnam (AATTV) arrived in Saigon. The AATTV was sent to Vietnam in a training and advisory capacity, as part of the US Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV). Their arrival marked the formal beginning of Australias involvement in the Vietnam War. AATTV members operated with the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN). Attached to units or battalions as trainers, advisers, and occasionally leaders, team members usually worked in the field, accompanying units on operations. The AATTV was increased to 73 personnel in September 1964, and then to 112 in June 1965. The Team reached a peak strength of 217 members in November 1970. As part of an overall reduction of the Australian commitment, the size of the Team was decreased gradually from April 1971, before its complete withdrawal in December 1972. Members of the AATTV were rarely together as a single unit, apart from on ceremonial occasions, such as ANZAC Day and the presentation of the US Army Meritorious Unit Commendation by General Abrams (Comd MACV) at Vung Tau on 30 September 1970. Although primarily deployed in the field, on 9 February 1971 the AATTV conducted the first course held at the new Jungle Warfare Training Centre in Nui Dat. AATTV soldiers also served in Mobile Advisory and Training Teams (MATTs) operating within Phuoc Tuy province, in III Corps. The AATTV remained in Vietnam after the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) was withdrawn in 1972. It was stationed in Phuoc Tuy province and focused on training. The Team was withdrawn from active service on 18 December 1972. A total of 1000 members served with the AATTV. Casualties were recorded as 33 members KIA and 122 wounded. This unit has the distinction of being the longest-serving and most highly decorated Australian unit of the Vietnam War: it was operational for over ten years and four of its members were awarded the Victoria Cross all four VCs awarded to Australians during the Vietnam War were to members of the AATTV. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 21.01.2022 Shame on the Queensland Government. They can have 35,000 people to a Rugby Union Game at Lang Park but propose 350 invited guests to a proposed Anzac Day 2021 If this is what is proposed for Brisbane what will be allowed in Beenleigh

20.01.2022 Vale Donald Mclaughlin It is with deep regret that I inform the members and friends of the Beenleigh Veterans and Ex-Service Association of the passing Donald (Yum Yum) Mclaughlin. Don served in the Royal Australian Navy during the Vietnam conflict on board HMAS Perth DDG 38 and narrowly missed being killed on the Gun Line in the Gulf of Tonkin when his ship was struck by Vietnamese shore batteries. RIP Don your watch is over and your duty is done.

18.01.2022 Today we remember, Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney from the Brisbane-based 6th Battalion, 6 RAR. On the morning of August 24th 2010, LCPL MacKinney was operating... as a mentor to the Afghan National Army during a partnered patrol through the Tangi Valley. As the lead Australians paused to investigate a suspected bomb, the Taliban opened fire. Lance-Corporal MacKinney and his section were at the back of the patrol and were ordered to come forward some 600 metres up hill to provide support. Jared known as "Crash" to his mates, had chosen to carry a machine-gun for one of his men who had become exhausted from hauling the heavy weapon. Lance Corporal MacKinney took over selflessly, running with the machine gun up the hill under heavy enemy fire, he threw himself down to the ground and started crawling to get closer to a position where he could set up the weapon ready to fire. Around thirty minutes into the battle, which would become known as "The Battle of Derapet", Lance Corporal Mackinney was hit in the left shoulder by a Taliban bullet, that missed his bulletproof vest and he sadly died. Jared was aged 28, married to wife Beckie and a loving father to their daughter Annabell. Beckie was pregnant at the time with their son, who would have been 5 weeks old when Jared was due to return home from his deployment. Jared was on his second tour in Afghanistan, having previously deployed to Iraq and East Timor. Our thoughts are with Jared's family and friends today. His sacrifice will never be forgotten. 12.01.2022 Z SPECIAL UNIT..... CLANDESTINE OPERATION JAYWICK DURING THE PACIFIC THEATER Z Special Unit was a joint Allied special forces unit formed during the S...econd World War to operate behind Japanese lines in South East Asia. Predominantly Australian, Z Special Unit was a specialist reconnaissance and sabotage unit that included British, Dutch, New Zealand, Timorese and Indonesian members, predominantly operating on Borneo and the islands of the former Netherlands East Indies. The unit carried out a total of 81 covert operations in the South West Pacific theatre, with parties inserted by parachute or submarine to provide intelligence and conduct guerrilla warfare. The best known of these missions were Operation Jaywick. Operation Jaywick was a raid on shipping in Japanese-occupied Singapore harbour between September and October 1943. The raid was carried out by members of Special Operations Australia (SOA) from Z Special Unit. The team comprised of four British soldiers, and 11 AIF and Royal Australian Navy personnel, commanded by a British officer, Major Ivan Lyon. Disguised as Malay fishermen, Lyons team travelled from Exmouth in Western Australia to Subor Island, 11 kilometres from Singapore, in a captured boat, renamed the MV Krait. The Krait was a slow-moving, wooden-hulled vessel about twenty metres long and sporadically suffered engine trouble for the duration of the voyage. On reaching the island three-and-a-half weeks after leaving Australia, the team launched three two-man collapsible canoes (folboats). Lyon and five others then paddled into Singapore harbour. Arriving at night they split up and slipped from ship to ship attaching limpet mines, paddling another 80 kilometres to rendezvous with Krait six days later on 2 October. When the mines exploded, seven ships were sank or badly damaged. The Krait recovered its intrepid but exhausted canoeists and travelled back to Australia, arriving at Exmouth on 19 October 1943. Operation Jaywick was conducted from 1 September 1943 to 19 November 1943 and involved a clandestine attack by a group of six allied operatives against Japanese shipping at Singapore. 07.01.2022 #OTD: Last major action involving the Rats of Tobruk Between April and August 1941 around 14,000 Australian soldiers were besieged in Tobruk by a GermanItali...an army commanded by General Erwin Rommel. On the 2nd of August, the majority of the Australian garrison was relieved, although the Siege was not declared over until the 10th of December with the arrival of the 8th Army. Tobruk was subject to repeated ground assaults and almost constant shelling and bombing. It was during this period that Nazi propagandist Lord Haw Haw (William Joyce) derided the tenacious defenders as 'rats', a term that the Australian soldiers embraced as an ironic compliment. The Australian garrison, commanded by Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead, consisted of the 9th Division (20th, 24th, and 26th Brigades), the 18th Brigade of the 7th Division, along with four regiments of British artillery and some Indian troops. On the 19th of August, the majority of the Australian garrison was relieved, with the remainder being replaced in September-October. However, 2/13 Battalion could not be evacuated and was still there when the siege was lifted on 10 December, the only unit present for the entire siege. Australian casualties from the 9th Division from 8th April to 25th October numbered 749 killed, 1,996 wounded and 604 prisoners. The total losses in the 9th Division and attached troops from 1st March to 15th December amounted to 832 killed, 2,177 wounded and 941 prisoners. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message.
