23.01.2022 First up is this Black IPA from Modus Operandi Brewing in Mona Vale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. This was our number one beer at the Bendigo On The Hop festiva...l last year. Sniffed blindfolded you would swear it was a really hoppy IPA then the taste reveals dry smoky roasted malts and even black coffee and a hint of liquorice on the palate. The hops are all from Oz and NZ hence the Southern Hemispheric name. They give aromas of tropical fruit and pine resin and a pleasing bitter finish. It’s 6.9% abv. See more

22.01.2022 Very nice start to the weekend. From a recipe discovered in the vaults of Britain’s oldest brewery, Shepherd Neame in Faversham, Kent, England, this is a classi...c old style English Double Stout. There are dry burnt malt flavours that morph into chocolate and coffee notes. It’s deep black and finishes clean and crisp. 5.2% abv. (I raise this glass in a toast to my Aunty Jody, whom we farewelled today. She was my Mum’s baby sister and best friend and was dearly loved. The service was lovely and a fine tribute from my Lexa cousins. ) See more

20.01.2022 Very refreshing Farmhouse IPA from To Øl of Copenhagen, Denmark. Funky, grassy, barnyard aromas cleaned up by a powerful hit of hoppy bitterness. Great on a sunny Melbourne evening!

20.01.2022 And a wee one to finish. This was a present from Dr Pratty for my recent 49th birthday. Founders from Grand Rapids, Michigan are old favourites here at B O’C an...d this is a new one. Canadian Breakfast Stout is an Imperial Stout brewed with chocolate and coffee then aged in maple syrup-bourbon barrels! Very, very nice. Beautiful dark colour with a tight, tan head and toasty malts on the nose. The bourbon hits big at first but is smoothed by the mellow sweetness of the syrup and chocolate. Still finishes dry with help from a strong coffee back palate. Fantastic! 11.6% abv! Lucky we only split the one little bottle!! PS. The 2017 vintage had a Mountie on the label. For the 2018 vintage, he’s been bucked off! Too much Stout! See more

20.01.2022 Wow! This collaboration between Evil Twin (Denmark via the USA) and Omnipollo (Sweden) is a conundrum. It’s brewed by Dorchester Brewing in Boston, MA. A hazy c...lassic IPA with lemon and espresso coffee added! Now these are two of my favourite things but I would never have thought that they go together! But, they kinda do! Some funky brettanomyces citrus sourness accompanies the lemon and the dry coffee bitterness mellows the finish. A very interesting beer. 7% abv. See more

19.01.2022 Another step on the way to craft beer legitimacy. This is our third beer, Amarillo, an American Pale Ale. It has crystal malts for a generous mouthfeel and pred...ominantly Amarillo hops for a clean finish. A summer beer now on tap at the Pine Grove Hotel and Carlei Estate Winery in Upper Beaconsfield and Volpino Restaurant at Mount Martha. See more

19.01.2022 Then a double IPA from Bent Spoke Brewing in Canberra. Cluster 8 is 8.8% abv and has a different hop blend that gives more tropical fruit punch flavours with a touch of resinous spruce. It still has a full malt backbone and is nicely balanced on the finish.

19.01.2022 Wow! This is amazing! From one of our very favourites, Stone Brewing, in Escondido, California, this is Xocoveza. It’s an Imperial Stout of 8.1% abv that’s brew...ed with chocolate, coffee, pasilla peppers, vanilla, nutmeg and cinnamon. Spectacular explosion of flavours but balanced by the dry, roasted malt backbone. There is deep bitter dark chocolate up front, smoothed by some coffee finish. A little warmth from the peppers and tingling spiciness as an aftertaste. Brilliant work, once again, Stone Brewing! See more

16.01.2022 And then Stay Puft Imperial Chocolate Marshmallow Porter. From Tiny Rebel in Newport, Wales, UK. This looked like being a masterpiece for us here at B O’C, who,... having enjoyed their Marshmallow Porter and being fans of Chocolate Snowballs, expected great things. Close, but no cigar! There is a marshmallow sweetness but the too dry chocolate flavour of the cacao powder overwhelms the creamy flavour. Nice but not quite. 9% abv helps the flavours around the whole palate. See more

12.01.2022 After a 44 degree day here in Melbourne (112 Fahrenheit), we thought we’d start with a refreshing IPA. Punk IPA from our old friends at Brewdog out of Aberdeen ...in Scotland, is a post modern classic. A tribute to IPAs of yesteryear, it’s lifted by fruity hops and has a clean bitter finish. It’s 5.6% abv so has a nice warming feel. Not one of the Brewdog boys best but a nice start to the weekend. See more

12.01.2022 It’s the weekend! This is a limited edition from Feral Brewing Co in the Swan River Valley in WA. They do Biggie which is a hopped up North East IPA style and t...hen this is the next step - Imperial Biggie. More hops, more malt and some dry hopping with Citra and Mosaic hops. Pours hazy and golden orange. There’s tropical fruits all through the aroma and a gorgeous pineapple/orange or mandarin flavour up front. Tight hoppy bitterness finishes clean and moreish! It’s 8% abv so a small one is a sensible choice! See more

10.01.2022 Finished for the Christmas break. This from Nomad Brewing Co in Brookvale, Sydney. It’s a Gose style to complement the ramen noodles of the Nomad boys favourite... Japanese restaurant, Ippudo. Ramune is a Nippon soft drink and this has some slightly flat lemonade hints with a little lift of yuzu citrus. A bit under carbonated and not really funky like a traditional Gose, it’s nonetheless a refreshing start to our weekend. 4.5% abv. See more

07.01.2022 Wow! This is amazing! From one of our very favourites, Stone Brewing, in Escondido, California, this is Xocoveza. 01.01.2022 And to follow, an Indian Pale Ale from Shepherd Neame in Faversham, Kent, England. Claiming to be Britain’s oldest brewer, starting officially in 1698! The loca...l hops deliver the potent bitterness that characterise an IPA but pale ale malts balance the flavour for a smooth but fruity traditional IPA. Just like the brewery shipped to India in the 1700s. 6.1% abv. See more
