On the ...list is a Queensland Bottle Tree (Brachychiton Rupestis), its so sad that this beautiful native tree amongst others must be removed for no justifiable reason other than our verge breaches bureaucratic technicalities. No public safety risk has been raised in justification of the order. 15.01.2022 Only ONE out of the FOUR Mayoral Candidates responded to our questions. UPDATE 9 March 2020: Candidate, Michael Burgess, has provided his response as a quote a...t the bottom of this post. If this candidate’s responses align with your feelings on this issue, PLEASE support their campaign and help them get elected! Vote for them Ask your friends and family to vote for them Contact the candidate and volunteer to assist them on Election Day Candidates: Mark Jamieson - current Mayor (did not respond at all) Donald Innes (did not respond at all) Chris Thompson for Mayor of Sunshine Coast Council Michael Burgess Q1. Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014 definitions includes the following defined land use: ‘Animal Keeping Premises used for boarding, breeding or training of animals. The use may include ancillary temporary or permanent holding facilities on the same site and ancillary repair and servicing of machinery.’ If elected, would you support amending the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme to separate these land uses? For example, the above land use definition being removed and new definitions added to clearly separate future proposals for boarding / training animals from proposals to breed animals? CANDIDATE RESPONSE Chris Thompson - Yes, definitely. Q2. Currently, any person wishing to keep more than two dogs on a property must apply for a licence from Sunshine Coast Council. If elected, will you commit to amending Council’s Local Laws and/or assessment guidelines to prohibit new licences being issued to breeders, and existing licences held by breeders not being increased to accommodate more dogs? CANDIDATE RESPONSE Chris Thompson - Yes, if elected I will be seeking a review of this to see what can be done at a Local Government level. I am aware that currently, State legislation does not limit the number of breeding dogs that breeders can keep, so Sunshine Coast Council needs to be doing more to prevent our region from becoming a location for puppy farms. I noticed that there is a discounted registration fee for undesexed dogs if the owner is a member of a dog organisation we need to tighten this up and make sure that the reduction only applies to ANKC registered breeders, not just any 'dog organisation'. Q3. Currently, Diamond Valley Kennels have existing lawful use rights to keep thirty (30) breeding dogs at their property on Ratcliffe Road, Diamond Valley. Any application to keep more than 30 dogs on the property will trigger a Material Change of Use development application for an intensification of the existing lawful use. If elected, will you commit to refusing any future application made by this breeder to keep more than 30 dogs at the property? CANDIDATE RESPONSE Chris Thompson - 30 breeding dogs is already excessive, and I am genuinely concerned about what happens to the dogs once they’re too old to breed. I imagine that any dog kept in that sort of environment would find it difficult to settle in to a normal loving home once the breeder no longer wants them. While any application to expand their current business would need to go through a formal application process, I personally would not support approval of any application to increase the number of dogs. Q4. Despite Queensland’s weak puppy breeding legislation, local Councils can play an important role in prohibiting puppy farms in their areas of jurisdiction. If elected, do you intend to implement changes to prevent extensive breeding facilities within the Sunshine Coast area? If so, how? CANDIDATE RESPONSE Chris Thompson - I understand that the Victorian and Western Australian State Governments have recently introduced strict regulations, banning the sale of dogs in pet shops and placing a cap on the number of breeding dogs that breeders can keep. It’s disappointing that the Queensland government has not done the same, but I believe it needs to happen. In the meantime, I strongly believe that Council needs to take this matter seriously and address the issue in the next planning scheme review. We also need to look at our Local Laws to see how we can best restrict puppy farm operations. There are so many animal rescue groups on the Sunshine Coast, with many volunteers dedicating their lives to saving, fostering and rehoming animals. Council needs to support these rescues more, and that includes cracking down on backyard breeders and puppy farms. Q5. If elected, will you commit to lobbying the State Government to change the puppy breeding legislation in Queensland? CANDIDATE RESPONSE Chris Thompson Yes, if elected I will seek Council’s adoption of a formal position on the matter and will write to the State requesting stricter legislation, including implementation of a cap on the number of breeding dogs that breeders can keep and making the sale of animals in pet shops illegal. I would love for Sunshine Coast Council to become the first Queensland Council to introduce provisions to ban puppy factories, and I am sure other Councils would follow our lead. Hopefully in the not so distant future, the State Government will change their legislation. There is also a State Government election this year, so I strongly recommend your group engages with State Government candidates, too. Q6. Currently, Sunshine Coast Council officers are assessing a development application for an extensive puppy breeding facility on Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough. This application is likely to be going through the formal public notification period in the coming months, and if you’re elected you will be required to vote on the application either to approve or refuse it. If elected, do you commit to voting to refuse the current development application when it comes before Council? CANDIDATE RESPONSE Chris Thompson - I’ve had a look at the development application and Council’s information request. It appears that there are quite a few issues with the application and many residents that I have spoken to are very upset by the proposal. I believe that combining a breeding facility with a boarding kennel will make it extremely difficult for Council officers to monitor and enforce any conditions on the number of dogs kept for breeding Vs boarding. I will be very interested in reading the Council planner’s assessment report when the application gets to that stage, and I will take all points raised into consideration. Without predetermining this specific development application, I do not want the Sunshine Coast to become a region that welcomes or encourages intensive dog breeding facilities / puppy farms. If elected, I will always vote to refuse any application to establish a breeding facility with a large number of dogs. Response quote from Michael Burgess - I oppose "Puppy Farms" without question, regardless of what planning schemes allow or disallow, regardless of impact on traffic or any other matter They do not seem to be supervisable in a sufficient rigorous way to ensure that could be anything less than inhumane I don't see they would add anything of value to the Coastal community Sometimes council becomes too preoccupied with rules & the danger from applicants pursuing matters thru courts, but there must be a point where the principles of a community must be protected So I would oppose them with heart & soul in almost any foreseeable format

12.01.2022 I am opposed to election signs. I think they are great waste, say little to nothing AND essentially amount to visual pollution. They are the ultimate hypocrisy ...for Council because businesses would be FINED if they did the same thing all over the Coast! I'm setting this up for two weeks so that the community can have it"s say! IF the answer is what I think it will be then it will become a policy for me to implement.

07.01.2022 Keep a look out for my campaign card in your letterboxes! In the main I will personally be delivering it myself. 50,000 copies...phew..... Actually I started ea...rlier this week in the Hinterland, but areas of the coast will be this weekend and early next week. Please take note of the web address as I will be adding policy statements every day starting mid next week. Remember I am completely independent. NO DONORS. NO PARTY MACHINE backing me. Cheers. Don Innes Mayor Candidate And if you'd like some to hand out around hit me up & ill try to drop a bundle off for you. That is how I can try to make this happen from a grass roots background. I know that the PARTY MACHINE is right behind the anointed replacement for Mark Jameison and I know that they ALWAYS expected to get there on the back of MJ second preferences. Now they're running a just VOTE 1 campaign, BUT really still want to get preferences so I know this is a David and Goliath battle! But what about the credibility of taking preferences from someone who is now held in such low esteem by the electorate? About the same integrity as taking an endorsement from a discredited CEO, as he has, and then refusing to co-operate with the ICEO the official Election online watchdog. High time my opponent came clean on whether or NOT he had permission to use the endorsement AGAIN in 2020. His credibility is on the line AFAIAC......

06.01.2022 Here is something to ponder. In Feb 2018 Council snuck through their version of Verge Policy. The usual few notices quiet narrative way they do. After it was th...rough then we got some fanfare. BUT a significant amount had never been publicly consulted. In particular was a provision which exempts developers. What that means, in simple terms, is that developers can install turf, garden trees stakes surrounds etc. that the community are prohibited from copying. I pointed out on one of the local FB forums that was discrimination against residents. So Council quietly just pulled the provision out and published online versions without it. Now a year later, after I had informed the Ombudsman's office about it, I formally asked Council for the published consolidated Verge Policy documents. It is a strict legal requirement. They couldn't respond and couldn't provide it. Under obvious pressure from the Ombudsman's office they eventually were able to provide the full consolidated policy. Lo and behold the discriminatory provision was back in. Small problem. The schedule where it was removed from was box framed and couldn't be re-edited so they just tacked it back on the bottom of the page outside the box frame like a dodgy counterfeit photocopy. Don't be surprised at the proclivity for dodgy. Cheers Don Innes Mayor Candidate [4] [1] [3] [2] "postcode" vote
