25.01.2022 Thinking of getting a puppy? Great! That means you're prepared for at least a year and a half of intensive hard work!... Acquiring a puppy does not mean simply having one more mouth to feed, it's a lot of work, all the hard work you put in during his first years determine the dog you will have throughout the next 10-16 years approx. If you do not have enough time or dedication to put in the effort needed to build a sociable, confident and well behaved dog then you should consider adopting an adult dog, that way you skip puppyhood. Whatever your decision, think about what your really capable of managing. In the image are a few of the things that should be trained with a puppy, not only does he have to be taught how to behave appropriately in human society he also should be thoroughly and correctly socialised with all kinds of stimuli in order to prevent fear in the future. Socialisation is not the same as simply exposing the dog to these different stimuli, we must guarantee good experiences and positive associations or we could infact be doing more harm than good, causing fears and traumas. The puppy decides what is positive and each individual is different, it is of great importance to possess the ability to read and interpret your puppy's body language, so that you can tell if he is uncomfortable or overwhelmed in a situation. Puppy Training is fundamental as it sets the pup up for success giving him life skills and preventing unwanted behaviour in the future. In an ideal world all puppies would receive professional help from minute one and not when they are already exhibiting behaviour problems.

25.01.2022 A fantastic article on dogs in early adolescence. Sadly this is a period of time where many young dogs are misunderstood which often results in them being rehomed/surrendered to shelters!

20.01.2022 A very confronting but valid article about dog ownership highlighting when some humans don't take enough consideration or time to make the dog a part of the family whilst also providing training and a predictable routine .

19.01.2022 An important update for all BTP supporters. As you may have noticed there has not been consistent activity on the BTP facebook page recently, nor have we confirmed a new event date. We would like to provide our supporters with an honest explanation. BTP was planned to run late 2015, however a key member of the events team pulled out at the very last minute which was one of the deciding factors in the move to postpone the event. In combination with that and bigger opportunitie...s for certain companies and speakers coming on board at a later date we did postpone. We want to ensure that the first BTP event to occur is successful and the best it can be for members of the public. Following our 2015 postponing, Casey was struck with a challenging personal health issue which required all her focus and energy. Upon starting to get better, she was given the incredible opportunity to travel around Australia this year. Currently she is halfway through that journey, using her time to continue to get better and meet a variety of dog owners around the country, both learning more and imparting advice where she can. The planning for the BTP event has not stopped and Casey's journey will only enrich the first event so that it can be as successful as possible. We look forward to announcing education event dates and services offered by Before The Paw when Casey returns in Spring this year. Thank you all for your support. The photo below is Sharlea, Caseys pooch who are both missing each other like crazy.

18.01.2022 Fireworks may be exciting for humans but they can be terrifying for animals. Here are a few things you can do to help ensure New Year's Eve is safer for our fea...thered and four-legged friends: 1) Before festivities begin, bring animals inside and ensure that your house is safe and secure. 2) Provide a haven in your home close windows, draw blinds/curtains, turn on TV or radio for background noise 3) Some pets can become so spooked they will do anything to escape including bolting over high fences and even through windows, so keep this in mind and make sure your property is escape-proof. 4) Make sure animals are easily identifiable (microchip, collar with your updated contact details) in case they do become lost. 5) Take your pup for a nice long walk/play during the day (provided it isn't too hot of course) so they are more likely to sleep later on 6) Don't tie up dogs as they can choke/injure themselves if they become panicked 7) Know what to do if you come across distressed wildlife around roads: www.AnimalsAus.org/ue If in doubt, stay at home or arrange for a friend or family member to supervise your animal companions (and distract them with treats and games). SHARE to spread the word!

11.01.2022 Prospective Puppy Buyers beware! Please please do your research before bringing a new puppy into your family : whether it is free, purchased from a breeder or adopted here are some helpful tips: * It is a LEGAL requirement for puppies to be microchipped if they are sold for money. Good breeders will always sell a microchipped AND vaccinated puppy... * If you purchase or receive a microchipped puppy - ensure that the breeder gets you to complete the microchip paperwork so that the puppy is transferred into your name : all dogs are required to have their microchip linked to the NSW Companion Animal Register ( this is what your microchip forms should say at the top of them ) There are multiple other registries that you can put your puppy on but ensure it is in addition to the NSW CAR. Have your local vet check the microchip database 2 weeks after purchase to ensure the breeder has sent off the paperwork! * It is ILLEGAL to give away OR sell a puppy under the age of 8 weeks of age . *If you suspect the puppy is underage, seek the advice of a veterinary professional, then report the breeder to the RSPCA and they will be investigated as it is not fair on the mother dog or the puppies! *All dogs are required by law to be registered with local council . They give you leeway to desex your dog at approx 6 months of age before they send you reminders. Fines incur if dogs are not registered. Most importantly puppies are not developmentally or socially ready to leave their mothers before 8 weeks of age, and they MUST be weaned onto puppy food and confidently eating before leaving their mum! This post comes after I had to help someone yesterday with a 3 week old puppy they have owned for 3 days who has not been feeding well. They are doing the right thing now so no judgement please but this just highlights the need for more education to stop the support for backyard breeders!

11.01.2022 An interesting article on how the Labradoodle originated and the potential problems occurring with the backyard of 'Designer Dogs'

10.01.2022 *ENVIRONMENTAL ENRICHMENT * A good simplified video showing the varying degrees of difficulty to work through when teaching a puppy or dog to love enrichment toys. Often dogs find puzzle toys too hard and give up easily if they are not taught how to manipulate the toy to receive the reward. ... Initially you need to set up puzzle toys to have a high rate of reward with minimal effort on the dog's part. For example loosely filling a toy with small treats/kibble that will fall out easily from a simple nudge will enable the dog to eat the treats quickly and create a positive association. Pair this with verbal praise and toy nudging assistance will strengthen motivation. Just like teaching a child to play with a new toy, encouragement goes a long way. Once the dog is becoming a master at that difficulty level you must make the toy more of a challenge. Our dogs will work for their food but it is essential to set them up for success !

10.01.2022 A recent RSPCA raid where 98 dogs were seized from ONE breeder! Take a look at the breeds bred in the masses, in poor conditions : frenchies , bostons , cocker spaniels and daschunds ! This is a prime example of why it is so important to do your homework on breeders before getting a puppy ! Don't buy sight unseen , don't meet somewhere in a car park for an exchange ! Make sure you meet the parents and the litter mates as well as visiting the environment the puppy has grown up in. So many animals are suffering at the expense of humans making a profit, and in turn many more puppies are presenting with behaviour problems from poor socialisation.

05.01.2022 A great article on dog behaviour for all dog owners!https://www.facebook.com/peta.clarke/posts/10153585466097693

05.01.2022 Stayed tuned for January, Before The Paw will be launching a private pre puppy consultation service to Sydney pet parents !

04.01.2022 When looking at getting a new puppy or dog it is essential you have a basic understanding of dog body language. There are many postures and behaviors you may not pay attention to without having some background knowledge. For example lip licking and yawning are both indicators of stress in a dog ( when exhibited out of context ) When visiting a breeder to meet the puppy's parents you will want to be able to observe how they react to your presence and attention as well as the puppies in the litter. This link offers an excellent insight into dog body language and i will share a good link below in the comments.
