22.01.2022 There has been recent publicity regarding raw chicken causing diseases in dogs. The disease in question is a rare neurological disorder called Acute Polyradiculoneuritis (APN) which causes temporary paralysis due to inflammation of the motor nerve roots. Researchers in the Neurology department at Melbourne University have discovered a possible statistical link with affected dogs and the consumption of raw chicken. The theory is that the raw chicken ingested could be contamina...ted with campylobacter bacteria* and that in certain individual dogs campylobacter may trigger an aberrant autoimmune reaction that triggers APN. The incidence of APN is extremely low in dogs, especially compared to the total number of dogs that eat raw chicken. Research into APN is ongoing as there may be multiple factors that trigger APN. Some patients in the study that developed APN had no access to raw chicken. At this stage the relative risk of developing APN by eating raw chicken is extremely low. *Campylobacter is a bacteria that usually causes gastroenteritis. It is most commonly found in chicken that hasn't been hygienically processed. It is usually eliminated by cooking."

20.01.2022 It's Dental Month A bright happy smile can absolutely make your day but being exposed to bad breath and diseased teeth can just as easily ruin it. If waking up to dogs-breath or having to avoid cuddles with your pet due to the smell is uncomfortable for you think about how your poor pet feels.... Bad breath and yellow coloured teeth are signs of dental disease. And dental disease is painful! It’s also a progressive disease it will not get better on its own and it will affect your pet’s general health and well being. Unlike humans, dental disease won’t stop your pet eating. Instead they will just learn to adapt their chewing or even learn to just swallow food whole. Pets don’t show obvious signs of dental pain as their survival instinct is so strong. Showing signs of pain or weakness places your pet in a vulnerable state that they will try to avoid at all costs. Please take dental disease seriously for your pets sake. Please take the opportunity to bring your pets into any of our clinics during August for a FREE dental health assessment with our nurses. Call your preferred clinic today to make an appointment: Newcomb 5248 2009 Drysdale 5253 1393 Point Lonsdale 5258 4862 Ocean Grove 5256 2400 Barwon Heads 5254 2434 Grovedale 5244 1300 All pets needing a dental procedure during August will receive an $85 discount.

10.01.2022 As Stage 3 Restrictions roll back into Geelong, we want to reassure you that we will be here for your pets. Even during the Stage 4 restrictions in Melbourne, Veterinary Services are deemed to be Essential Health Services. There are no limits placed on how far you can travel to seek care for your pet. We take yours and your pet's safety very seriously, along with the safety of our staff. In addition to following all the DHHS Health directives for operating a business, we have... been providing contactless veterinary care continuously since April and we appreciate your support as we try to keep everyone safe whilst giving your pets the care they need. This contactless service will continue for health care and grooming, but Puppy Preschool Group classes will be suspended and move to an online format with a private face to face session to follow. What we need from you is this: - To follow all the public health directives (ie social distancing, wearing a mask, washing/sanitising your hands) - To let us know if you or any member of your household are feeling unwell or have symptoms, in quarantine or self isolation or have had contact with a COVID-19 case (If you are in this situation, we can organise a telemedicine appointment to establish a safe way to manage the case in the clinic or remotely, depending on what is appropriate and needed). - Have only one person attend the clinic where possible - Remain in your car when you arrive and phone us - Not make a phone call while you are waiting for us as then we can’t get through - Be patient with us as this system creates an increased amount of phone traffic - Let us know if you have an emergency or urgent case as you will be prioritised - If your pet's case is not urgent, we appreciate your consideration that we may need to prioritise more urgent cases. We will give you honest guidance as to the urgency of your case if you are not sure, based on scientific evidence - If you do need to enter the clinic, you will be required to sanitise your hands, wear a face mask and have a temperature check. Your contact details will be further collected for potential contact tracing purposes as per government regulations - If you need medications, parasite products or food, you can place an order by going to our website www.bellvet.com.au and click on the Order Medication tab or by phone and you can then collect contactlessly. If you need to have them delivered, let us know. Together we can manage the COVID risks and ensure your pets get the care they need during these unprecedented times. We thank you for entrusting us with the care of your furkids.

03.01.2022 Important information for all rabbit owners. Has your rabbit been vaccinated within the last 6 months? We have just been notified that early March there is a planned release of a new strain of Rabbit Calicivirus (RCDV1 K5) planned for the Winchelsea area, Bellarine Peninsula and other locations around the state in an effort to control wild rabbit populations.... Past calicivirus releases have seen rapid geographical spread shortly after release. It is hoped that the current vaccine will be protective but the new recommendations are for the current vaccine to be used 6 monthly to keep antibody levels high. Please phone and make an appointment to review your rabbit’s vaccination status as soon as possible as there can be a two week delay in antibody response to the vaccination. Calicivirus can be spread by direct contact with infected rabbits, bedding or equipment and can be spread by insects such as flies, fleas and mosquitos. Keeping rabbits indoors or in mosquito-proof hutches and protecting with flea products such as Revolution (puppy and kitten size) may help to protect your rabbits. There are often no symptoms with calicivirus, just sudden death. In recent weeks we have also seen a lot of rabbits present with myxomatosis. There is no vaccine for this disease, but again keeping inside or in mosquito-proof enclosures can help reduce the risk as this disease is also spread by mosquitos. Call for an appointment today Newcomb - 52482009 Drysdale - 52531393 Grovedale - 52441300 Ocean Grove - 52562400 Barwon Heads - 52542434 Point Lonsdale - 52584862

02.01.2022 Last week we treated all our staff at all our clinics to a delicious individual grazing box (all dietary requirements catered for which is quite the logistical challenge!) by Splatters. Thanks very much Jo and team! Our staff have been working tirelessly these last few months and it was great to take some time out to do something together whilst apart whilst supporting local business. A big thank you too to Geelong Cool Rooms who promptly provided the space to store all our delicious boxes until we finished our shifts when it became apparent they weren't going to fit in the tea room fridge! https://www.splatters.online/ https://geelongmobilecoolrooms.com.au/

01.01.2022 BVP Autumn News It's time to plan ahead for the cooler months as Autumn has arrived and daylight savings has just ended. Pet bedding needs refreshing and the blankets and dog jackets need to be checked for wear and tear. Older pets need warmer, comfortable bedding options for overnight to help support their joints. Outdoor birds and pocket pets will need extra shelter spots to snuggle out of the wind. Extra bedding hay in hutches and relining nesting boxes will keep them happ...Continue reading
