25.01.2022 Vale Peter McEachern Campbell OAM Bellerive Yacht Club join the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and the Derwent Sailing Squadron in mourning the sad loss of Peter Campbell. The veteran yachting writer and editor was one of Australia’s most distinguished sailing journalists. Peter was a great friend to the Bellerive Yacht Club and an outstanding promoter of yachting on the River Derwent. His support and advice was always greatly appreciated at BYC. His expertise in media liaison ...was unrivalled and he lifted the profile of the sport of sailing in Hobart and beyond. He was a true gentleman, an exceptional reporter and was highly respected by his peers and fellow sailors. Peter had a passionate love of our sport and this was reflected in his journalism. We extend our deepest sympathies to Peter’s wife Sarah and family. BYC Commodore Graham Mansfield

19.01.2022 BYC are offering a Safety at Sea and Survival Refresher course. This will allow you to revalidate your existing certification for a further 5 years. We also welcome those who would like to gain some experience in topics covered by the Safety at Sea syllabus. The highlight is the liferaft exercises at the pool. We’ll show you how to inflate a liferaft, how to get into one and how to assist others with assisted entries. It’s good knowledge to have should you find yourself having to use a liferaft. We review heavy weather sailing techniques, new technologies, jury rigging and radio procedures, so if you’re not needing the certification, you’ll still find the course useful as well. It’s ideal for cruising sailors. We hope to run a full course later this year. Find out more at https://byc.org.au/training-courses/

10.01.2022 BYC RULES NIGHT 5TH OCT!!!!! Hopefully, you’ll never have to meet these guys in the room. Murray Jones is an International Judge and Jonathon Rees is a National Judge. They know the rules back to front and have offered to run a rules seminar at BYC on Monday 5 Oct in the marina bar starting at 1900 hrs. It's obvious we need to know the rules, but there are some situations where your rights change. This is when the trouble begins. We’ve picked a few days before summer sail...ing begins so it will be great to have a refresher. Murray and Jonathon run a very interactive session and there’s no such thing as a dumb question. Also, there are some rules which will change next year. Murray and Jonathon will update you on these. Why not pop in and get some advice from the highest level of accreditation we have in the country. Meals are available from 1800 hrs and it’s a great opportunity to bring a few of your crew. Where: Bellerive Yacht Club When: Monday 5 Oct @ 1900 Cost: It’s FREE and everyone is welcome See you there. Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania Derwent Sailing Squadron Inc

09.01.2022 Sparkling Series Finale On a magnificent Father’s Day spring morning the Combined Clubs Winter Series wound up with a spectacle of sail on the River Derwent. A ...fleet of 45 yachts started in a light northerly that built as the morning wore on, reaching a mid-race peak gust of 22 knots. With a westerly flick every now and again, navigators and skippers were kept on their toes as there were large gains and losses to be had. Asymmetrical Division 1 boats Oskana, Crusader and Jazz Player revelled in the flat-water conditions laying down some spanking spinnaker runs. The Dog House and Temptation, also carrying large asymmetrical spinnakers were almost as fast, setting up an exciting finish in Division 2. Division 3 and 4 saw more traditional boats filling the podium with Trouble, Footloose and the SB20 Mind Games bringing it home in Div 3 and Serenity, Another Toy and Innovator in Div 4. At the completion of the 5-race series Jazz Player (John Dryden) was successful in Division 1 from Drew Latham’s Whistler and Michael Pritchard’s Oskana. Overall winner in Division 2 was Zephyr (Ian Johnston) taking the series by one point from Ambrose Coad’s The Dog House with Steve Harrison’s Temptation in third. Young Lion (Steve Chau) showed that consistency is the key in winning Division 3 without taking a race win but always being there or thereabouts. Dave Willans’ Trouble finished two points behind in second place overall with Just Jones (Dave Wyatt) rounding out the podium. Division 4 proved to be the battle of the J24s with Michael Kennedy’s Another Toy pipping Matt Westland’s Zest after Zest kicked off the series with a win and a second in the first two races. Graham Hall’s reliable half-tonner Serenity finished in third overall. BYC, DSS and RYCT would like to thank the competitors for showing such staunch support in difficult times and our ever-present volunteer race management teams that make it all possible. 06.01.2022 The Bellerive Yacht Club is proud to announce that the Notice of Race for 2020-2021 Combined Clubs series are available at https://byc.org.au/racing/sailing-documents/. It has been a long winter and with the last race of the CC Winter Series this Sunday we are excited to start our 20-21 summer sailing season. This year's program has some exciting new features. Along with our summer favorites the Summer Pennant, Offshore, Midweek, and BYC Twilight Series, you'll note the addition of the Short Course Series and the Two-Handed Long Race Series. There will also be the inclusion of the Combined Clubs Women's Regatta in April. Also, keep an eye out for a BYC specific event with a twist. Mike Faure

06.01.2022 MIDNIGHT RAMBLER AND FRONTLINE ALL CLASS IN THE COMBINED CLUBS LONG RACE Saturday’s Combined Clubs Summer Pennant fleet struggled in desperately light winds at ...the mid-river start in conditions more suited to paddling a kayak than sailing a yacht. Each division limped across the start line, with Excalibur (Duane Pitt ) and Pirate’s Pride (Peter Masterton) having their patience tested as they battled a two-knot current and no wind, taking an hour to get back to the start line after being across the line before the start. Excalibur eventually retired from the race. Race Officer Gilbert Leitch was confident in the forecast though, sending the top three divisions to Betsey Island while the Division Four fleet’s racecourse took them to White Rock, Blackmans Bay and home. Midnight Rambler (Ed Psaltis) and Frontline (Ian Snape) have consistently shown their class on the water this season, with both boats taking a clean sweep on IRC, AMS and PHS in Division One and Two, respectively. After a slow start to the race, the fleet reported wind of up to 20 knots on the beat from the Iron Pot to Betsey Island, a good run back to the Pot, and a shy spinnaker reach home, finishing in a 12 to 15 knot southern easterly breeze. Intrigue (Don Calvert) had a solid day taking second place on all handicaps in Division One. In Division Two, Winstead Wines (Neil Snare) took out second place on PHS, Southern Swordfish (Ian Stewart) took second on AMS and Natelle Two (Glenn Roper) was second on IRC. Off-Piste (Paul Einoder) retired from the race. The battle for Division Three came down to the wire with Young Lion (Steve Chau) and Invincible (Bryan Walpole) sailing a tactical final leg to the finish line with Young Lion winning on IRC and AMS, and Invincible winning on PHS. In Division Four, Wayatih (Allan Morgan) won on PHS while Hornet (Neville Georgeson) was first across the line and second on PHS. Words and Images: Jane Austin

05.01.2022 Thank you to everyone that came along to our Fathers Day boardwalk party. We were so thrilled by the way everyone conducted themselves and abided by the covid rules we have in place! The success of this event means that similar events may still go ahead in future.

04.01.2022 Congratulations Detail First (Scott Broadby), winner of the 2021 Rockstar Roberts Memorial Pursuit Race sponsored by Nibbs Electrical. Sundowner (Alice Grubb) took second place and Hydrotherapy (Jim Thorpe) finished in third. Full results across all Divisions here: https://byc.org.au/results/RSR/01RGrp10.htm Jane Austin

04.01.2022 All to Play For in Winter Series Finale Sunday’s final race in the Combined Clubs Winter Series is wide open in all divisions with margins as small as two point...s separating the top competitors. With last week’s race abandoned due to wind gusts over 40 knots in an unseasonable north-westerly blast, the fifth race of the series will be the last race and scores will be counted without discarding each boats’ worst result. Sailmakers and boat builders all over town have been busy this week making good the damage sustained in last week’s blow, damage kept to a minimum by the rescue boat crew from the Derwent Sailing Squadron and the skippers of boats that aided those who were in trouble. In Division 1, John Dryden’s Jazz Player is five points ahead of Drew Latham’s Whistler, with RAD (Brent McKay) and Wayne Banks-Smith’s War Games a further four points behind. While Jazz Player is in a good position to secure the series, the light conditions forecast for Sunday could suit the low-slung Radford 35 and the Farr 40 OD War Games over the heavier displacement Jazz Player and Whistler. In Division 2 Ian Johnston’s Zephyr holds an eight-point lead over The Dog House (Ambrose Coad), with Richard Grant’s Cromarty Magellan one point further adrift in third. Zephyr looks comparatively safe at the top of the leaderboard but with six points separating boats in second to sixth the minor placings are still anybody’s with Steve Harrison’s Thompson 7 Temptation in fourth two points behind Comarty Magellan and Twitch, campaigned by the Twitch Syndicate, a further two points behind. Throw in Mark Ballard’s well-sailed 42 South a further point in arrears and Division 2 becomes the fleet to watch on Sunday. Young Lion (Steve Chau), leads Division 3 by four points from Chris Sheehan’s Saga and Dave Wyatt’s Just Jones one point behind Saga. On paper the winner of this division could come from as far back as seventh where Phil Reid’s Mind Games, with some good early results, sits on 28 points but it is hard to see the well-sailed Young Lion letting this one get away. The battle of the J24s heads up the Division 4 fleet with Another Toy (Michael Kennedy), and Matt Westland’s Zest duking it out for series honours with Don Bailey’s Sundance. Motley, Stephan Lubach’s Mottle 33 and Graham Hall’s half-tonner Serenity are also a chance for the podium. All to play for in all divisions in Sunday's race to be conducted by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania with the first start off Castray Esplanade at 9:40.
