03.01.2022 A fantastic report from recent BYSPT recipient, Cooper Nichols about his recent voyage to the United States with the North East Bushrangers! Congratulations Cooper! On the 30th of November 2019, my fellow North East Bushrangers and I left Melbourne for the long flight to Los Angeles California to play basketball against American high school teams all over the West Coast.... This dream of mine to play in America would not have been possible without the generosity of the Young Sports Person Trust who donated $500 towards the trip. It was the most amazing, surreal experience of my life, and one I’m sure I wont forget anytime soon. Over the almost 3 weeks of my trip I learnt so many valuable skills, not just in basketball but also in travelling and seeing new places. We played against many high schools in Seattle and Portland and even got to stay with some player’s families and see what their life is like. After our homestays we would go to school with the player and visit their classes. Seeing all the minor differences in the way we do things in Australia compared to them was amazing and really fun to talk about with the American players. In Portland we got to watch two NBA games. We saw Portland vs L.A and Portland vs Oklahoma. It was incredible watching Lebron James play right in front of me. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. We also watched college games and had tours of the massive college facilities and campuses. At the end of our trip we got to go to Disneyland and Universal Studios. I have Mr Bill Sykes and the Young Sports Person Trust to thank for all of the amazing opportunities I had while in America. - Cooper Nichols
