If someone had told me five years ago, when I was relocating myself and my public relations business to Bendigo, that... this is what I’d be doing, I would’ve thought they were nuts, Greta says, no pun intended! 12.01.2022 Children’s author Katrina Nannestad makes Otto, the Magpie, part and parcel of her happy life among the rolling hills south of Bendigo. When Katrina found Otto, she and her family were braving the brisk Sedgwick wind during their very own Octoberfest. Homemade German sausages and beer awaited for lunch. On the ground there was this tiny fluffball, she says. We walked on and when we came back, he was still there. I read fledglings are kicked out of the nest a week before t...hey can fly and if you find one you should put it up to perch, but he couldn’t walk and had a damaged leg. So home he came, to be given a German name in honour of the day, and Katrina’s latest children’s novel. I’d just finished writing my latest book and one of the main characters is named Otto, she says. (Her black whippet, Olive, is named for her popular series Olive of Groves.) Katrina is the author of several popular book series, including Red Dirt Diary, The Girl, the Dog and the Writer, Lottie Perkins and the stand-alone title The Girl Who Brought Mischief, which won the 2014 NSW Premiers Award.
