24.01.2022 Hi Beautiful Bee Buddies 30th September is the new date set for our zoom meeting, this replaces the meeting that was canceled a couple of weeks ago due to major technical issues. Like everything else this year we'll blame Covid . If you've already registered, there's no need to re register, keep an eye out in your emails for the link. If you'd like to join let us and hear Matt's talk on sustainable bee keeping let us know before Sunday. Stay safe

23.01.2022 Next Zoom Meeting: Wednesday 4th November 2020 at 7.30 p.m. Topic: Members are asked to email to Carol [email protected] a couple of photos they have taken and would like to talk about to initiate further discussion. It would be great if you could get those phones or cameras out to take some photos of things you are proud of, things you are puzzled about, or things which may prompt some interesting discussion at our meeting. It would be even better if you are able... to talk briefly about your photos and lead questions/discussion for a few minutes. So don't be shy snap away, no question or scenario is silly. Looking forward to your input. See more

22.01.2022 Beekeepers, only bring healthy hives to almonds Brokers, orchardists and Agriculture Victoria officers undertake physical inspections of hives you bring to ...almonds. So, if you’re bringing your hives to almonds, make sure they pass the inspection. Hives showing signs of disease will be removed from orchards. A healthy hive at almonds is worth over $120, but a diseased hive at almonds could cost you a $330 fine. For more information about attending almond pollination, the Code, or beekeeping in general, email your questions to: [email protected] Do yourself and the industry a favour and leave weak and diseased hives at home.

11.01.2022 Hello All, Please note the following message from Rob in relation to our April 1 meeting. Postponement of April meeting.... Following some discussion with a number of branch members, a decision has been made to postpone the April meeting at Peppergreen Farm. With the Covid19 climate, many community groups are in this unique situation of considering the same question. The decision was not easy to make, yet the question of safety and caution has to override all other aspects. Since a reasonable number of our members have been holding a birth certificate for some years, safety becomes a more prominent aspect. The Annual General Meeting. At this stage a date for the AGM has not been set. At the AGM, may I remind members that the following positions are available for nomination and election. President and vice president. Secretary and assistant secretary Treasurer. Up to 5 committee members. Resources representative/library officer. ******************* Future. I would like to encourage all members to consider nominating for executive positions. A successful organization thrives with an active executive group, one that is able to provide continued leadership and renewal over the years. As is the case with all Victorian (at least) beekeeping groups, our branch membership is evolving, as the interest in beekeeping grows amongst smaller and recreational beekeepers. It is important that the needs and interests of this group is catered for. Additional to these developing interests, Bendigo branch is very fortunate, in fact probably unique, in having a substantial membership of commercial apiarists who over the years have provided, and still provide, generously, in their knowledge and guidance. The branch must cater for this group as well. It is important that the branch continue to steer towards meeting all these needs of the membership. Please consider your interest in contributing to the branch in these roles. I am happy to talk with anyone who may be looking for more information about this. ******************** In the meanwhile it is likely that there will be more communication to the membership via email, until it is clear about future meeting details. Regards, Rob Gardner. President. 0477489889

04.01.2022 If your hive has swarmed be on the look out for secondary swarms Also known as an after swarm, secondary swarms occur after the prime swarm. When bees are preparing to swarm there will often be many queen bee larvae in the colony. If these virgin queen bees emerge from their queen cells, one queen may leave with half of the colony. Who else has information on swarming or secondary swarming, wtite in the comments..

01.01.2022 BENDIGO BRANCH V.A.A. INC. 41ST ANNUAL BEEKEEPING FIELD DAY 2020 CANCELLATION OF 11TH OCTOBER 2020 HARCOURT FIELD DAY - RE COVID-19 The Bendigo Branch V.A.A. Inc.’s President and executive committee has decided, in the interest of public health, after careful consideration of the collated opinions (gained via a survey of its members) and together with thorough consideration of the health advice, guidelines and pandemic restrictions regarding COVID-19, to cancel this year...’s 2020 annual beekeeping field day which is usually held at Harcourt. As you are aware this is a rapidly changing situation. Bendigo Branch’s main priority is to ensure the health and safety of all beekeepers, traders, general public, volunteers, members and participants involved. This decision has not been made lightly. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to all who were looking forward to this event. We would like to assure everyone that subject to new or continuing COVID-19 restrictions we will be working towards conducting our annual beekeeping field day again on the second Sunday of October in 2021. In the meantime, Bendigo Branch is exploring the possibilities of keeping its members connected by holding Q&A educational sessions and/or business meetings etc., replacing face to face meetings, by using the on-line resource of ZOOM. The Committee thanks everyone for their understanding and patience as we negotiate our way through this difficult period. We trust that you will be able to continue supporting the beekeeping community by attending our next beekeeping field day and perhaps, in the meantime, linking with us via Facebook and ZOOM. We look forward to the future. Kind Regards, Carol Maunder (Secretary) On behalf of Bendigo Branch V.A.A. Inc. See more
