23.01.2022 Magic egg laying cat
22.01.2022 For those that missed it last night! The cows are our girls https://www.bhg.com.au/johanna-visits-a-converted-church-ho
21.01.2022 Some days just make you cringe Most people who have taken up farming can probably relate to this. Clearing up areas that have been left overgrown, only to uncover an old dump site. I thought I had picked up the old posts, but alas, I guess not. Straight through the tyre on the new tractor. Thank goodness we have the other tractor still, it means we can keep moving instead of coming to a halt while the tyre gets fixed. #notenoughfarmingemojis #redtractoremojineeded
20.01.2022 Cows found a new scratching post! I don't think we'll be purchasing this for you girls, so enjoy it while you can!!
20.01.2022 One of the ways we have been able to improve areas around the farm and increase ground cover and organic matter. After 7 years of strategically placing cattle feed around the fields, when possible, it's very satisfying to see the grasses growing where once was bare ground covered in weeds
19.01.2022 Lime lime lime!! Looking forward to getting this spread on the fields. Did you know, lime contains approx 38% calcium? We'll be using it to help balance out the ratio of calcium and magnesium in the soil to improve availability of other nutrients, among other things. So exciting!
19.01.2022 Off to their morning feed feeling like the Pied Piper
17.01.2022 Nice day for burning stumps. Just missing marshmallows and friends
17.01.2022 It amazes me to see how far we've come in our soil health over the past few years. It took 6 months to find our first earthworm in the field, to now, 6 years after finding the little fella, finding them in the roots of the weeds I pull out. It's been a long process to get to this, but very happy to see so much worm activity happening.
16.01.2022 Getting the cows in for morning milking. The bird songs are very varied at this hour of the day!
15.01.2022 Who said we don't have skunks in Australia?? At least these two cutie patooties don't stink! Sired by a rare breed bull, Eppan, of the Pustertaler breed, this pair always make you smile as they hang out and play, then want a scratch afterwards!
15.01.2022 Keep an eye out for a peek of Benmar Farm girls this Friday at 7 on Better Homes and Gardens Thanks to Kev and Jill who's home will be the star feature!! https://www.instagram.com/p/CDNQvoUAMJ-/?igshid=41h0kk53e3c6
13.01.2022 This was a year ago today....updated video in comments
13.01.2022 On my mind?? The earth says, hello!!
10.01.2022 Busy few days around the farm, clearing overgrown fence lines of brush. Lots of manual work with the chainsaws, but getting it done!
09.01.2022 This is what a team looks like! So the boss ladies had a couple of days off farm and of course something has got to go wrong right before leaving. The grain auger broke, which meant that the relief milkers were going to run out of grain (which is a nightmare dealing with cows that don't get their "icecream"!). But luckily we've dealt with auger issues before, so knew how to get around it, which meant these champions came in and bucketed the feed in by hand so the cows wouldn't run out of grain. And it meant we could enjoy our break knowing the farm was in capable hands! Thank you to Dennis and Marelle, Bruce, Mez and Brodie, and Connor and Issy for doing what you did and providing piece of mind for us to have a break!!
08.01.2022 Good morning from Benmar Farm!! Glorious sunrise after 87.5mm of rain in the past 48 hours.
08.01.2022 When you gotta strip down for milking, you know it's bad!! 25 years I've been working in dairies and have never been pooped or peed on resulting in a wardrobe change. Thank goodness it was a warm afternoon!!
07.01.2022 Remember the stump burning pics that were missing friends and marshmallows?? This is what was stuffed inside 1 of those stumps. Each stump had at least a few bottles. It bugs me that those that have come before me treated the place like a garbage tip, with little respect for what they got to take care of.
06.01.2022 Getting it done! With rain forecasted in the next week, we're very happy to be able to get this spread so it can be washed in! Looking forward to seeing the changes this should bring
06.01.2022 Sometimes your day can go downhill quickly and unexpectedly, throwing schedules and routines wayyy out of whack. But then looking at all these Fleckvieh heads, makes it worth it. Love our Benmar girls
05.01.2022 I wasn't sure which was the best pic to post, so I just put them all in! Those white dots on the fence posts are cattle egrets, they get their names because they're usually around cattle. It was a beautiful evening, bringing the cows in with the moon already so high in the sky
04.01.2022 We had the pleasure of hosting our local Young Farmer Connect group on Sunday. First outing for the year for us, it was a great day!!
03.01.2022 Miss Cupcake (Fleckvieh - BG Wyoming X Jersey) with her new little heifer, Miss Moremi (Fleckvieh - BG Moremi). The baby has spunk! Miss Cupcake is the little cutie you see on our website with her tongue sticking out, but much darker now!! (baby pic in comments ) www.benmarfarm.com.au #dairywithpurpose #benmarfleckvieh
01.01.2022 ~ Meet Manning Valley dairy farmer and businesswoman, Carissa Wolfe ~ I grew up with the family house cow, starting as a toddler with my grandfather, watching ...him treat his cow like a goddess, then filtering and bottling the milk with such reverence and precision, waiting patiently until he was finished when we could have oatmeal cooked on his pot belly stove with fresh cream. Growing up, my family travelled too much to have our own cow, but we only ever got milk from friends' or neighbours' cows, and that was the source of our drinking milk, butter, yoghurt, and ice cream. So, even though I didn't work on a commercial dairy until 2002, my relationship with the cow and the dairy products produced from her provision has been throughout my entire life. We have 110 cows in our herd, farm aligned with Nature which has enabled us to value add through organic certification, and receive the benefits of "regenerative ag" like drought resistant/resilient pastures. As part of that overall intent, we've chosen a heritage dairy breed that still retains the original health and foraging characteristics, as well as more muscling, to cope with the humidity and heat, not need a 'high octane' diet to produce commercial milk volumes, calve annually, and have value as a 'beef' animal as well (#fleckvieh). My favourite thing about dairy farming is being intimately connected to nature and my food source, and holding that responsibility for those who consume the food I produce. Part of that connection is the relationship to the cow - I wanted to see if one could maintain the relationship a family has to their house cow on a commercial level, could one run a business with cows as the production means and still see each cow as an individual? Awesome to say, absolutely definitely YES (and I've been on large dairies that manage the same through technology and animal welfare standards) Each breed has such unique characteristics, particularly when using the milk directly to make food - I honestly don't have a 'favourite', it depends what my aim is. Top ones in no particular order: Jersey, Illawarra, Ayrshire, Fleckvieh. Love your work and passion Carissa. Well done
