20.01.2022 The Equ.ALL.ity Club Why did we start the Equ.ALL.ity club? We wanted to start the Equality Club as we thought about our final year approaching we wanted to leave a legacy that would mean something. With the world changing so fast, and the way social media and how students communicate changing we wanted to help support more teens (like us) in school. The school is doing an amazing job at being inclusive and supporting students, but we felt the school needed a club run by stud...ents, a club where we can talk about topics that relate to life in school and life outside of school where you always feel safe. The Equality Club is a safe space where everyone’s voices can be heard. We want to make a change and the best place for that is in our own school community. So, what do we want to do? As a club, we want to make the school feel safer for all. We wanted the safe space to be created by familiar faces that the students know. The Equality Club wants to make sure everyone’s voices are heard when we talk about important issues and ideas. We also think mental health and wellbeing is extremely important so our club is a place where you can learn little tips and tricks around wellbeingfor school or just in the day to day. Projects we are working on for 2020 & 2021 Every week or so articles will appear in the notices. These articles feature movies or TV shows about fighting for equality or people who influenced a certain movement in our history. For example, a few weeks ago, there was an article posted about Helen Reddy’s biopic ‘I am Woman’, in the article we discussed the plot, what we can learn, and how influential Helen Reddy was to the second wave feminist movement. Other projects we are working on include: videos for Assembly, making inspirational bookmarks for the library including quotes, images or fun infographics, making posters for the club and we have already locked in to connect up with several other clubs at the school to help connect up as many students as possible! We want to support everyone in the school, because everyone deserves equality, everyone deserves a voice. We want to build the strength of this community and stand strong against the injustices within our current society. For that to happen, we must take those small steps like many before us on the path of doing what is right though it isn’t always easy. Sincerely, - The Equ.ALL.ity Club

04.01.2022 I would like to share some wonderful achievements from the Benowa Redbacks Volleyball over the weekend where three teams participated in Senior Schools Cup. We entered three teams all of whom represented the school to the highest degree continuing our long-standing reputation as a highly competitive and fair school. Mr Hutchison’s (assisted by Miss McCarthy) Open Honours Girls completed the competition in 4th place with some very tough competition this year, with many games ...going to tight fifth setters. However, these girls had an admirable amount of fighting spirit and never gave up on the court. I would like to take the opportunity to recognise the contribution to Benowa Volleyball by our outgoing Year 12 students. Their efforts have definitely raised the bar at Benowa SHS. Ms McCartney’s Year 9 Girls (who were playing in a Year 11 Honours competition) entered the weekend looking for a steep learning experience playing against teams two years their senior (with expectations of playing structured volleyball regardless of the outcome of the game). Impressively, these girls finished 3rd, taking out the bronze medal against Craigslea in the final game of the weekend. Mr Mackay’s Senior Division 1 Boys entered the tournament with many new players having joined the Redbacks family this year. Although being new to the game, this didn’t stop the boys being competitive throughout the tournament taking many well established teams to three sets. This team ended up finishing 8th overall. Congratulations to all of these students and teachers. Can I also take this time to recognise the generosity of the teachers involved Mr Hutchison, Miss McCarthy, Miss McCartney and Mr Mackay. They gave up their weekend (and countless other hours throughout the year coaching) to ensure that students had a meaningful interaction with their sport. Thank you very much! Miss Passmore, Director of Sport

03.01.2022 A massive thank you to the sports coordinator, ms Ashley Passmore for another successful day of inter house sport. And to all the heads of house for their contribution and organization of TIP leaders. You all looked wonderful and helped end the term with something special.

03.01.2022 How to be a no drama llama: grow a reputation for NOT being involved in drama. Communicate clearly, courageously and honestly. Stay away from situations that a)... don't involve you and b) are only about being offensive, mean and hurtful to others. And if you see someone being hurt or harmed, find a non-dramatic, helpful way to #saysomething. See more

02.01.2022 You are in charge of how people are treated in your school, your workplace and your home. When people are mean, hurtful or harmful, remind yourself that being a bystander is helping the problem to grow. Harm grows in silence, so it is important to find a way to #saysomething.
