25.01.2022 UPDATE, Thursday, 10 September, 6pm: Wow, Central Coast - thank you for your support! We have been overwhelmed by registrations. As a result, the initial 2,000 ...places in the Curby soft plastics trial are now full! Those accepted into the trial will receive a confirmation email by Friday 18 September. We know it will be disappointing for those who missed out on being part of the trial. However, if you have registered your interest, we will keep you updated on its progress. You will also be the first to know if we are able to expand the Curby program to all the Central Coast. Please note that the selection of households to participate in the Curby trial is partly based on having a representation of suburbs across the Coast. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Help us stop soft plastics going into landfill and our waterways! We're looking for 2,000 Central Coast households to join our trial to divert "scrunchable" household plastics like chip packets, cling wrap, food packaging and chocolate wrappers from landfill. Every participating household will receive special "Curby" bags and tags to store their soft plastics. These will be collected with the fortnightly yellow recycling bin. Instead of going into landfill, the soft plastics will be used in a number of ways, such as being converted into the oils and chemicals they were made from or used to create long-wearing products such as bollards, decking, outdoor furniture or signs. Registration for the trial closes 30 September. 25.01.2022 Thank you to the children at the Central Coast Sports College for bringing their preloved toys to school and the lovely lady who brought them to us here at the Neighbourhood Centre. These toys will be sent to either our Bilby Toy Library or our op shop, both at Bateau Bay Neighbourhood Centre so that they continue to give enjoyment to other children and not go into landfill. Thanks all at the school who were involved in this great end of year toy giving activity.

24.01.2022 Reposting this with a clearer diagram. What does Berkeley Vale Neighbourhood Centre do? I have drawn up a brief outline of the services we provide through the Centre. If we can help please don't hesitate in contacting me via Facebook, email to [email protected] or mobile 0490 538 494

22.01.2022 Lost your job cos of COVID? It’s no wonder you might be feeling down! If unemployment has you on struggle street, here are some emotional coping strategies: V...olunteering can give you a renewed sense of purpose, build connections and networks and looks good on your resume. Further education can expand your skillset and make you more employable. Even if money is tight, there are lots of ways to get educated in an affordable way. If you are receiving financial government support, you may be eligible for subsidised education. Start your own business or try something new. Some people find that being unemployed gave them an opportunity to do something different. You might find creative ways of making money, or try pursuing a passion you didn’t have time to follow before. Seek support from trusted sources, like family, friends or Kids Helpline. Find ‘dopamine hit’ rewards that don’t cost money and are an adaptive coping strategy. For example, start a new exercise regime or hobby. Be aware of your beliefs. Research has shown that people who believe they can improve their financial situation are more likely to overcome financial hurdles than those who feel powerless! Spend energy and time on the things that make life valuable. The good news is most of these things are free! This can include spending quality time with people you care about, having fun, laughter, a great conversation, etc. These things also help you to have a mental break from stress, which is important for your self-care.

21.01.2022 A timely message for everyone...try again tomorrow

21.01.2022 Berkeley Vale Neighbourhood Centre has joined with the local CollaborArtti Studio to provide 8 weeks of low cost art classes. If you have more than 1 child who would like to attend and would struggle to meet the Term cost please contact me via messenger so that we can discuss it. Please note as we are using the smaller Chittaway Point Hall and with COVID regulations we are more restricted with numbers than we would normally be. Please book and pay your Terms fees quickly to guarantee your child's place.

20.01.2022 No need to spend $$$$$ on toys as everyday objects will provide some of the most fun. But when you would like your child to have access to toys then why not join the Bilby Toy Library

19.01.2022 A great read and maybe forewarning words to the older generations but heeding words for the younger population who are always wishing their years away from reaching 18yrs old,21yrs old, finishing school etc etc. I know I go "oh can't wait 'til it's Friday" and the weekend goes so quick, can't wait 'til I have holidays which vanish seemingly quicker. As I get older I start to realise that every day is for living and taking in even the smallest of pleasures and not to be in too much of a hurry to get through life or put things off to "after.."

19.01.2022 If you have been affected by the floods and don’t have a safe place at the moment then head over to the Diggers at The Entrance which has been set up as a community evacuation centre.

13.01.2022 It’s normal for children to feel down, be cranky or think negatively this is just part of growing up. Children have to go through a range of feelings to learn... how to deal with them. But childhood depression is more than just feeling sad, blue or low. Depression in children is a serious condition, which can affect children’s physical and mental health. Children with disability or chronic conditions are more likely to experience low mood and depression than their peers because they might be in pain or feel that their condition gets in the way of daily life. If you think your child might have depression, it’s important to get professional help early. Find out more

11.01.2022 Residents across New South Wales are urged to monitor weather reports and health advice as the state is expected to experience heatwave conditions in the coming... days. The Bureau of Meteorology warns temperatures are generally expected to increase over the weekend. As the weather heats up, motorists are also reminded it’s not only an offence for children or pets to be left unattended in a vehicle, it can be deadly. Everyone needs to take care in hot weather, but some people are at higher risk of heat illness, especially if they are older, live alone or are socially-isolated. Remember to; Stay well-hydrated Avoid alcohol and hot or sugary drinks Limit your physical activity Try to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day Wear light, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fibres like cotton Regularly check your forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology on radio, TV, internet or App Get advice from your doctor about whether your medication and/or your medical conditions may affect what you should do if it gets extremely hot Make sure you know who you are going to call (who may need help, and who could provide help to you if needed); make a list of telephone numbers and make sure they are current. If you can, it's a good idea to spend some time in an air-conditioned building. For more information please refer to the Beat the Heat website: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/beattheheat Livestock and pet owners are also being urged to ensure adequate clean water is always available and that shading is provided where possible. Additionally, no animals should be left in confined, unventilated areas. Members of the public should also regularly visit the Rural Fire Service website at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for updated bush fire warnings and information. For updated weather forecasts and warnings visit www.bom.gov.au.

10.01.2022 Behaviour is another form of communication. As an adult, we can help our children learn to find what’s underneath, what’s actually going on. Learning at a young age will help them as they grow to regulate their emotions and know they aren’t ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’.

07.01.2022 Berkeley Vale Neighbourhood Centre Inc auspice the Tuggerah Out of School Hours Service at Tuggerah Primary School. The staff are an amazing team who work tirelessly in providing a fun, nurturing and safe place for children whose parents are needing their children in care for different reasons. This is a low paid industry where staff are required to meet many outcomes as part of their accreditation. They are teacher, mother, father, first aider, friend, confidant and many oth...er roles for these children and their families. And sadly, sometimes, verbal punching bags. You may have children who attend an Out of School Hours Care Centre at a different school that you are confident in sending your children to. Every now and then your OOSHC staff need to be shown they and their efforts are appreciated - not just by the fact that your children continue attending but by saying thanks and celebrating with them on July 29, 2020 OOSH Educator's Day. Well done OOSHC Educators far and wide. See more

04.01.2022 Last Friday the new Board of Governance was elected to oversee the organisation. Congratulations to: Kim Juresa - President, Maureen Brew - Vice President, Kathy Bradburn - Ordinary Member, Terry McGovern - Ordinary Member and Richard Pagett - Ordinary Member We managed to fill 5 of the 8 positions on the Board at the meeting. This has left us short of 2 Executive positions being the Secretary and the Treasurer plus 1 ordinary member.... It is important for us to recruit the 2 Executive positions to have a fully functioning Board. As described on the Institute of Community Directors website: Board members are charged with working collectively to act as the "mind" of the community group they serve. In doing so, they must work together to: Determine the group's mission and purpose; Set a strategic vision and plan; Ensure the group is financially and legally accountable; Appoint and monitor the group's CEO (if it has one); Ensure the group has adequate resources; Work to enhance the group's public image; and Assess the board's effectiveness. If you feel you can work towards this role and are interested in sharing your time and skills to the Neighbourhood Centre in achieving our vision and work we do then we would love to hear from. The Board meets monthly on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 1.30pm at Bateau Bay Neighbourhood Centre. My name is Gillian and I am the Service Manager for the Berkeley Vale Neighbourhood Centre Inc. If you are interested in finding out more about the organisation and the Board please message me through Facebook, ring me 0490 538 494 or 4388 5801, or email me at [email protected]. I am hoping that from the communities of Chittaway Bay/Point, Berkeley Vale, Glenning Valley, Tumbi Umbi, Killarney Vale and Bateau Bay we can find 2 people with the skills and interest to become either the Treasurer or Secretary for a minimum of 12 months or longer. Information packs and training are available.

02.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK 2020! Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be. recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.... We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be. https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/2020-theme
