23.01.2022 It's #WildlifeWednesday and today we're taking a look at the Austracantha minax - commonly known as the jewel spider or the Christmas spider The jewel spide...r is native to Australia and the single species of its genus within the orb weaver family. Female jewel spiders are larger than the males - they have 6 spiny protrusions on their abdomen and are mostly black with white, yellow and orange patterns, however some can be all black in colouring. Jewel spiders are most commonly seen during the summer months, hanging around in the centre of their webs waiting for unsuspecting insects This female jewel spider was found at Pepi’s Land in Emerald. Keep an eye out for these fascinating, fancy little creatures when you’re out exploring one of Cardinia Shire’s many bush reserves! For a full list of Cardinia Shire's parks, playgrounds, sporting grounds, recreation reserves and bushland reserves, head to: www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/reserves
