25.01.2022 Today marks the 30th International Day of Older Persons where we acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of older people around us. #COVID19 has disproportionately impacted older people - this year the focus is on the role of healthcare workers in contributing to the health and well-being of older people in our community. This year we also take the opportunity to address and challenge ageism. Stereotyping, discrimination and mistreatment of older people are all examples o...f ageism and at its extreme, is one of the major drivers of elder abuse. Elder abuse is an often complex, hidden issue. Find out how our elder abuse prevention services help support older people experiencing issues ranging from family conflict to family violence situations: https://www.betterplaceaustralia.com.au/elder-abuse-preven/ #IDOP2020 #respectingelders

23.01.2022 Today the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System released its final report. This is a significant moment for Victorians and Victoria, providing 65 recommendations for change and reform to address key gaps in the system. Every year, one in five Victorians will experience some form of mental illness. It is observed that by the time individuals seek help, they are already in crisis. ... Mental illness and seeking help remains a stigma and the demand for support has increased significantly, particularly in the recent years due in part to the bushfires and the pandemic. We are pleased that the Victorian Government has committed to implementing the recommendations to provide better care and achieve the much-needed system reform. These include improving the mental health outcomes for Victorians through providing early support and a stronger integrated mental health and well-being response. 17.01.2022 Today is Wear It Purple Day! Wear It Purple Day is a day that celebrates and supports young LGBTQIA+ people. #WIPD2021 encourages us to challenge societal attitudes to help shape a better world for us all to live in. Though many young LGBTQIA+ people lead happy and healthy lives, studies show that they still face greater discrimination, abuse and stigma in society, leading to poorer mental health outcomes. We all know how challenging it is being a young person living in toda...y's world - the added stress, anxiety and pressure that an LGBTQIA+ young person can face means that it's incredibly important we support them each and every day. This year's theme focuses on the important and necessary conversations we have in our daily life - such as our sexual orientation and gender identity. These are important conversations that shouldn't just be on Wear It Purple Day, but every day. Learn more about how we can take the first steps to change by using inclusive language in our everyday interactions. https://www.wearitpurple.org/s/PRONOUNS-MISGENDERING.pdf If you are a young person needing support, the Better Pride support and well-being service can help. 16.01.2022 Next year important funding from the Commonwealth will be cut, adding a significant burden to the Family and Relationship Services (FRS) sector, a sector already strained by COVID-19. Many vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the community are provided largely by not-for-profit organisations using funding from various levels of government. ... Better Place Australia is concerned that the funding cuts will impact those who need it most and that the Government act to address this urgent issue. 01.01.2022 Welcome to #NAIDOC week, starting from Sunday 8 November and ending on Sunday 15 November. The theme for 2020 is Always Was, Always Will Be, recognising Australia’s First People who have occupied the continent and its adjacent islands for over 65,000 years. Better Place Australia is proud to support NAIDOC week and is excited to share, learn and celebrate with meaningful conversations, reflection and staff participating in the many community events happening virtually acros...s Australia. Today, Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islanders are more likely to experience poverty, poor health and mental health outcomes, and poor life expectancies in Australia. While much headway has been made by way of Indigenous rights, health and life expectancy, we have a long way to go. We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded and pay our respects to their elder’s past, current and emerging, and those of the other areas we provide services to within Australia. Each year reminds us of the ongoing aspirations of our communities as they continue the movement towards justice and equality. Find out more about NAIDOC Week and join an event: https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/2020-theme #NAIDOC2020 #mentalhealthmatters
