25.01.2022 "The joint letter to Biden argues that an end to the death penalty is especially important given his commitment to racial justice. Of the 49 inmates left on federal death row, about 20 or 41% are African American, compared with the 13% of the US population that is black."

23.01.2022 A Texas man convicted of double murder asked the state criminal appeals court in Midland County to vacate his conviction and order a new trial after it was revealed that the judge who presided over his criminal trial was simultaneously employing one of the prosecutors in the case as his judicial clerk.

23.01.2022 We would like to invite you to our upcoming event, where CPJP and Eleos Justice will be launching a report, State-sanctioned Killing of Sexual Minorities: Looking Beyond the Death Penalty'. The report scrutinises the role played by states - direct or indirect - in the killing of sexual minorities. To register, go to: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/report-launch-state-sanctio

22.01.2022 "In his annual address to the nation last month Mr Duterte claimed reinstating the death penalty by lethal injection would 'deter criminality'. But there is little evidence to prove that the death penalty can be a deterrent. Instead research has shown the punishment frequently affects the most disadvantaged. In the Philippines alone the Supreme Court said in 2004 that 71.77% of death penalty verdicts handed by lower courts were wrong."

20.01.2022 "The case for ending capital punishmenton practical, economic, and moral groundsis overwhelming. There is no need to add a foreign policy case for abolition. But just as Obama did with his executive order banning torture, Biden, if elected, will have an opportunity to act swiftly and boldly on capital punishment in order to reassure U.S. friends and allies and symbolically recommit the United States to the values it shares with the rest of the democratic world."

19.01.2022 "Turkey abolished the death penalty in 2004, although no executions have taken place since 1984. Restoring the death penalty would put an end to Turkey’s already-dormant bid to join the European Union."

19.01.2022 "The Duterte government’s overwhelming majority in Congress and continuing efforts to promote its campaign against illegal drugs means the justice committee is likely to support death penalty bills. Duterte’s 'war on drugs' has resulted in the deaths of more than 6,000 persons at the hands of the Philippine National Police and thousands more by unidentified gunmen. Accountability for these police killings, including those that victimized children, is practically nonexistent."

18.01.2022 "Before the last minute stay, Syed’s case had attracted considerable attention from death penalty abolitionists and human rights groups, who described it as another instance of the inhumanity of the death penalty in general, and the cruelties of Singapore’s system in particular."

18.01.2022 Iran has executed a 27-year-old wrestler accused of murder after he took part in anti-government protests two years ago.

18.01.2022 Robert DuBoise has walked free after spending almost 37 years in prison - including 3 years on death row - for a 1983 rape and murder he did not commit. I never lost faith that today would come. Now the world knows DNA proves I did not commit this crime. To walk out of this nightmare and hug my mother and sister after almost four decades, knowing I was innocent is bittersweet. I can never regain the birthdays, holidays and precious time I lost with them, nevermind the life I could have made for myself. I am grateful to be here, now with a chance to move forward, but I know there are more innocent people like me still behind bars."

17.01.2022 We deplore the Iranian authorities’ repeated use of the death penalty, which has earned it the shameful status of consistently being among the world’s most prolific executioners. There is no justification for the death penalty, which is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, and we urge the Iranian authorities to abolish it.

16.01.2022 An ex-bandit fights the silence of prison life with her notebook and pen. A family remembers the night their younger son was arrested for rape and murder. A woman finds out from her fellow prisoners that she's been given the death penalty.... Based on interviews with death-row prisoners and their families conducted by Project 39A, National Law University, Delhi. The Punished is a profoundly moving insight into the lives and minds of men and women demonised by society and discarded by the State. https://www.amazon.in/Punished-Stories-Death-R//9390351871

16.01.2022 "The evidence is now at the forefront of constitutional challenges to the death penalty in the United States. It has even made its way to the Supreme Court, where lawyers for inmates on federal death row have used autopsies to argue that lethal injection protocols constitute cruel and unusual punishment under the Eighth Amendment."

15.01.2022 Houthi authorities are using compromised courts to punish journalists for doing their job, adding to the armed group’s bleak record of abuses, said Afrah Nasser, Yemen researcher at Human Rights Watch. These journalists should never have been arrested in the first place, much less face the death penalty.

14.01.2022 Catch ‘High Ground’ in cinemas now. Set against the stunning landscapes of 1930s Arnhem Land, the film follows young Aboriginal man Gutjuk, who in a bid to save the last of his family teams up with ex-soldier Travis to track down Baywarathe most dangerous warrior in the Territory, who is also his uncle. High Ground was produced by the brilliant Maggie Miles - who we’re working with on Guilty Project - and who has done so much to raise awareness of the injustice of the death... penalty. https://youtu.be/WL-G4oCoDF0

14.01.2022 "On the campaign trail, Biden said he’d work to end the federal government’s use of the death penalty Although only Congress can fully abolish the federal death penalty, the president can do a great deal to speed its yearslong decline across the country."

13.01.2022 Australia’s Strategy for Abolition of the Death Penalty sets Australia apart from other countries that have abolished the death penalty because of its outward-looking policy of pursuing abolition in other countries. It is not limited to advocating the restricted use of the death penalty in instances where Australian nationals are sentenced to death as was the case with Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan. It takes a principled stance against the death penalty 'in all circumstances for all people'.

12.01.2022 "Despite the wide assumption that the federal death penalty is the 'gold standard' for capital cases, in reality, these defendants often encounter the same poor lawyering and misconduct found in state trials yet with the benefit of even less judicial scrutiny after the fact. Vialva’s case is a perfect example. His trial records reveal myriad problems, from ineffective assistance of counsel to an expert who assessed his future dangerousness using junk science. But these issues have never been heard in court."

12.01.2022 To commemorate the 18th World Day Against the Death Penalty, Justice Project Pakistan will be hosting a unique live art performance based on four short stories written by acclaimed novelist Mohammed Hanif on October 10. Titled ‘Before The Sun Comes Up’, the stories offer a glimpse into the lives of four prisoners as they await the dawn of their execution.

11.01.2022 "A sticking point during six years of negotiations on the reciprocal access agreement (RAA) has been whether Australian troops would potentially face the death penalty if convicted of serious crimes while in Japan. Japan’s justice system retains capital punishment for cases of multiple murder or aggravated single murder."

10.01.2022 "Biden has made eliminating the death penalty part of his criminal justice platform, a move that breaks from his past support for the death penalty and makes him the first Democratic presidential candidate or president-elect to take a consummately anti-death penalty stance since Michael Dukakis in 1988."

10.01.2022 This year we are marking the World Day Against the Death Penalty in conjunction with Australians Against Capital Punishment a little differently. We will be hol...ding a COVID-19 appropriate Zoom webinar rather than our usual in-person dinner. We are pleased to announce that we will be webcasting a recorded address - made especially for this event - by the famous Sister Helen Prejean, long time activist against the death penalty and author of the book Dead Man Walking, portrayed by Susan Sarandon in the movie. Sister Helen's lifelong work continues through her Ministry Against the Death Penalty based in New Orleans. But the pandemic has, of course, limited her ability to raise funds through live speeches in the United States. As a result, JWMF and AACP have decided to forgo any money from the event ourselves and instead set a fundraising target of $10,000 for Sister Helen's ministry. The webinar will go to air at 6:30pm on Friday 9 October 2020. We hope you can support the event by registering and making a donation. To register for the event and receive your Zoom link, go to: https://events.humanitix.com/world-day-against-the-death-pe Please donate to the bank account of Australians Against Capital Punishment, which will be coordinating the fundraiser for Sister Helen's ministry: BSB: 633-000 Account Number: 134984681 If you have any enquiries, please email us at [email protected]. Please feel free to share this post in order to spread the word. Thank you for any support you can provide.

06.01.2022 "On criminal justice, he has moved far from his much-criticised "tough-on-crime" position of the 1990s. Mr Biden has now proposed policies to reduce incarceration, address race, gender and income-based disparities in the justice system, and rehabilitate released prisoners. He would now create a $20bn grant programme to incentivise states to invest in incarceration reduction efforts, eliminate mandatory minimum sentences, decriminalise marijuana and expunge prior cannabis convictions, and end the death penalty."

05.01.2022 "Saudi Arabia is considering ending the use of the death penalty for drug-related offences, a change that could spare the lives of dozens of prisoners in the kingdom every year, according to a Saudi official and human rights groups that monitor capital punishment in the country."

05.01.2022 "Researchers found that misconduct by police and prosecutors is among the leading causes of disproportionate false conviction of Black defendants. For example, 78% of Black defendants who were wrongly accused of murder were convicted because of some type of misconduct. That number is 64% for white defendants, according to the study. An even wider gap: 87% of Black defendants later found innocent who were sentenced to death were victims of official misconduct vs. 68% for white defendants."

05.01.2022 Just Mercy is now available on Netflix in Australia. The award-winning film follows world-renowned civil rights defence attorney Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) as he recounts his experiences and details the case of a condemned death row prisoner (Jamie Foxx) whom he fought to free. The film also stars Brie Larson, Tim Blake Nelson, and O'Shea Jackson Jr.

03.01.2022 22-year-old Nigerian singer Yahaya Sharif-Aminu has been sentenced to death for insulting the Prophet Muhammad in a song he circulated on the messaging platform WhatsApp in March.

02.01.2022 "Hudson said he will not squander this opportunity. His goals centre around helping other prisoners win release and changing the public’s perception that few are redeemable. He is most proud of the young men he mentored to ensure they don’t repeat the mistakes of his youth, and wants to continue sharing an anti-violence message."

02.01.2022 The sworn accounts by executioners, which government filings cited as evidence the lethal injections were going smoothly, raise questions about whether officials misled courts to ensure the executions scheduled from July to mid-January were done before death penalty opponent Joe Biden became president. https://www.9news.com.au//c9526489-7f6b-4199-82f5-f52fa868
