22.01.2022 Better Place, a Better Start Bradford project, are excited to announce the completion of works at Kettlewell Snicket in Canterbury! Local children from Canterbury worked hard with Better Place during the summer of 2019 to create artwork that would influence the designs of this revamped space. See the photos below to see how the children’s artwork influenced the stone carvings that can now be found at the snicket!... We hope that these improvements to Kettlewell Snicket can now make the journey to Canterbury Children’s Centre a safer, cleaner and more fun experience! Watch this space for more of our improvements across the Better Start Bradford area that we have developed with the local community! 12.01.2022 Introducing the newly developed The Roughs woodland at Bowling Park in Bradford! Together with Better Start Bradford, Bradford Council, The National Lottery Community Fund and Groundwork Yorkshire, the Better Place team have designed and installed a new pathway through Bowling Park’s woodland area, opening up accessibility for parents to take their 0-3 year olds to enjoy and experience nature on their doorsteps. In the woodland we’ve installed three beautifully hard carved ...timber animal sculptures and two children’s timber seats, plus 22 new large trees. After Christmas there will be information boards, plus bird and bat boxes installed that will introduce visitors to the wildlife and plants that thrive in the woodland. The new entrance will enable easier access to the area, with a new tarmac path running from the road to the roughs. We recently received the most wonderful feedback from Les Whitworth, a local resident, who wanted to share how much the work to improve Bowling Park meant to him: I live in West Bowling and have done all my life. I visit Bowling Park most days and I’d like to congratulate the people involved in the new work being carried out. The wooden structures in the wooded area are fabulous. All the new work being carried out makes the park a great pleasure to visit. Please keep up the good work and pass my congratulations on to all concerned, and I look forward to future projects in the parks. We hope you enjoy the new developments of The Roughs woodland and share your photos during the upcoming holidays of what you find there! 07.01.2022 Last week we took a collection of trees over to the ARC in Bradford as part of a busy day of tree planting! Around 150 trees were planted throughout the Cante...rbury community in Bradford, as the Better Place Bradford team joined Groundwork Pride Ltd to hand out trees and shrubs to local residents, and plant some at the ARC Community Centre. Each household in the area was given a tree, with the apple and pear trees being the pick of the bunch! If you live in the area we’d love for you to send in photos of your new trees over the next few months as they continue to grow! Let's hope they’re blossoming come spring time!! 04.01.2022 Bradford Council were recently awarded Tree Cities of the World recognition by the UN for their commitment to Tree-planting and promoting a greener, healthier community The council are planning to plant 20,000 trees across Bradford’s district as part of the Northern Forest Project, with local authorities and partner organisations in the north of England aiming to plant 50 million trees over the next five years!!! We’re thrilled that Better Place Bradford investment and ...improvement to the local environment in Bradford will have a positive impact on children’s physical and emotional wellbeing for years to come. The tree planting work on the Canterbury estate in Little Horton by the Better Place Bradford team earlier in the month was a brilliant way of getting the local community actively involved in creating a more sustainable and healthier environment to engage residents in tree planting and creating greener spaces in their community. The reaction of the local people has been brilliant, especially given the project was pushed back from March due to the lockdown restrictions. As November - March is tree planting season, the project has had to wait until now, but we’re glad it’s already having a positive effect in the area! This is your last reminder that you can watch the tree planting session on BBC Countryfile tonight at 6:15pm on BBC One. We can’t wait to see some familiar faces! https://www.bradford.gov.uk//bradford-to-feature-on-sund/ Better Start Bradford Bradford Council The National Lottery Community Fund Groundwork Yorkshire BBC Countryfile Extra Born in Bradford

02.01.2022 There are 18,290 trees on the streets of Bradford, and Better Place Bradford are busy planting even more! At the start of November Better Place Bradford, Better Start Bradford and Bradford Council were part of a tree planting day at the Canterbury estate in Little Horton, planting trees and handing them out to local residents across the neighbourhood, and BBC Countryfile were there to capture it all unfold! It was great to welcome Countryfile presenter Anita Rani back to her ...hometown of Bradford, and it was wonderful that the TV cameras were there to show what a positive impact the Better Place project is having on Bradford’s residents. 187 trees were planted or handed out to local schools, community centres and people’s gardens throughout the day, and the community is already benefitting from it! The team hope this will help improve the residents wellbeing, as green areas are proven to be relaxing, calming environments. Planting and being outdoors is great for the mind and soul, and we all need a bit of positivity this year! You can watch the story on Countryfile tomorrow at 6:15pm, on BBC One https://www.bradford.gov.uk//bradford-to-feature-on-sund/ Better Start Bradford Bradford Council The National Lottery Community Fund Groundwork Yorkshire Born in Bradford BBC Countryfile Extra

01.01.2022 Child psychologist Professor Tanya Byron has noted: The less children play outdoors, the less they learn to cope with the risks and challenges they will go on to face as adults Nothing can replace what children gain from the freedom and independence of thought they have when trying new things out in the open.
