19.01.2022 Developing the personal and social capabilities of our young people, will not only benefit them but will in turn benefit our communities. In a COVID world change and uncertainty are some of the few constants we can be sure of. Equipping ourselves and especially our young people with the toolkit and capabilities to manage the stress, emotions and challenges that come with continuous uncertainty is vital for our health and well-being. Developing these capabilities doesn't just... happen with the flick of a switch, it is a process. To build a positive and healthy community we have to first start with building up ourselves. At Beyond The Game we believe in understanding ourselves before we can truly understand and help others. Our framework for personal and social growth take an evidence based step by step approach. This framework is embedded in all of our holiday programs and activities are adapted and modified to cater for the appropriate developmental stage of our participants. We expect not just our participants to engage with this process but also our coaches. After all a coach can't truly lead with empathy and achieve the outcomes they want without having an understanding of what makes themselves and their players tick. 09.01.2022 Anxiety and other psychological disorders are massively on the rise among our young people. The schools, mental health support services and private psychologists in our communities are inundated with requests to support our young people and simply can't cope with the demand. Whether it be pandemic related, the impact of social media or our generally busier and more expectant society the issue is real. At Beyond The Game we openly address the reality that we will all at some... time have to manage anxiety and overcome psychological challenges. We explicitly teach positive coping strategies & help seeking behaviours in our programs and provide our young people with the opportunity to practice them in different contexts. Combining these strategies with physical activity and team based sports is a great way for our young people to learn how to manage the mental and emotional challenges of the world we live in! 04.01.2022 This is a recent quote from 24 year old American gymnast Simone Biles. She is America’s most successful gymnast with a combined total of 30 Olympic and World Championship medals to her name. Regarded by many as the greatest gymnast of all time, in her young career she has rejected the boundaries of limitations and re-imagined what is possible in the world of gymnastics, inspiring millions along the way. However, on Tuesday Simone decided to withdraw herself from the Olympic t...eam events citing mental health struggles and an overwhelming burden of expectation. This is a sad and eye opening situation! Add to this the recent mental health challenges faced by another high profile athlete in Naomi Osaka and it solidifies the necessity in having robust mental health and well-being structures in place for our athletes, which should begin at a grassroots level. Thankfully in this instance Simone Biles expressed gratitude and thanks to the supportive and structured response of her coaches and USA gymnastics throughout what has been a more than challenging few years, culminating in Tuesday's decision. The importance of providing our young athletes and community members with the correct tools to manage stress, develop and maintain positive health and well-being is just a small piece of the puzzle. We must also provide them with cluns and organisations which have a strategic framework for well-being, a responsive support network and safety net they know will catch when they fall, and they will fall. Beyond The Game works with community clubs in helping them develop their own understanding of how to promote health & well-being, as well as assisting clubs in setting up structures and frameworks to ensure our young people are supported when they face challenges. 04.01.2022 Resilience is one of the highest ranked psychological character strengths for success according to psychologists. In a sporting context resilience is a key characteristic of successful athletes. As much as highly competitive people hate to admit it, they don't always make the right decisions in a game or put in their best performance. We all have bad days! Whether it's on the pitch, the court or in the pool failure is one thing all athletes experience! You can choose from a ...variety of inspirational (often cheesy) quotes to capture the importance of responding appropriately to failure. Michael Jordan, Serena Williams and even Rocky Balboa have all in their own way articulated the importance of learning from failure and persevering to achieve success. While there are many different terms used to encapsulate the idea of resilience one thing we can be certain of is that resilience is a cognitive skill that can be developed with practice and the right framework. Unfortunately like any worthwhile skill it doesn't just happen overnight it takes a change in your mindset. You can be sure that Australia's Ash Barty will bounce back from her first round exit at the Tokyo Olympics today. She will demonstrate her capacity to be resilient in defeat and acknowledge her mistakes. Honest self-reflection is one key step to developing a resilient mindset. How do you as an athlete or coach respond to failure? Do you practice resilience forming habits individually or discuss them with your teams? Beyond the Game's programs provide evidence based frameworks for developing resilience in ourselves as players and our teams. Get in touch to find out more! https://beyondthegame.net.au/
