18.01.2022 I am fortunate enough to be on an great three day advanced course on Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP). The presenter has worked with some of the best international researchers in the area. She is a great person to learn and update skills with. Many women have issues with pelvic organs prolapsing (sagging), and the risk increases with age, vaginal delivery, obesity, repeated heavy lifting, chronic respiratory conditions (coughing) and constipation due to the increased pressure o...n the pelvic structures. If a person has mild symptoms (a sense of heaviness or something coming down, possible low back pain, difficulties emptying your bladder or bowel), the symptoms can be improved by pelvic floor muscle training and lifestyle re-education such as avoiding high impact exercise or aggravating factors as above. If the symptoms are more moderate/ severe (a large protuding bulge) then a pessary may be a good option for some people. A pessary is a silocone device that can be fitted to support the prolapsing (sagging) pelvic organ. This may then prevent the need for or delay surgery. If you do need surgery it is a good idea to get assessed properly and get more than one opinion on the type of surgery you need. It is not always necessary to have a hysterectomy (removal of your uterus), if you have an advance uterine prolapse. It is possible to have a surgical procedure (hysteroplexy) to provide more support. Not all gynaecologists are able to do this. It depends on their individual training and preferences. This is why it is good to have more than one opinion. A pessary is also a good option to allow a person to return to high impact activites like running or weight lifting. This is only possible for a select group of people as it depends on the type of prolapse and individual anatomy whether the pessary will be effective. This is why is is worth getting assessed by an appropriately trained medical professional (GP, Gynaecologist or Pelvic floor physiotherapist), so you get the best advice.

13.01.2022 I am constantly astounded how many amazing people I know who manage multiple challenging things in their lives. Parenting, sick children, dance rehersals and performances, sports grand finals on top running their own business! Others still positive, bright and smiling despite significant financial difficulties and poor health. All of my lovely friends who do these things and are incredibly humble and think nothing of what they manage in their every day lives. It is so im...portant to take time out to acknowlege how well we do especially when things get overwhelming. Just chatting to friends or colleagues helps put things in perspective. I would just like to say Thank you to my lovely family and friends for their great support. I treated a patient today with bladder issues following an overdose. I feel very fortunate to have the support I do. It is very sad that some people do not. Beyond blue has some great resources to help, along with Helping minds for WA family support in the community. https://helpingminds.org.au https://www.beyondblue.org.au

13.01.2022 I am incredibly grateful to be live in Perth, W.A. at the moment and not in one of the Hurricane devastated areas. We are so lucky to live somewhere safe. I saw a post for a petition recently pleading with hotels to let people take their pets. I can only imagine the anguish of having to leave one behind. We have a Border Collie - Wilfred or 'Wilfie'. He is very much one of our family. I was much more strict when we got him but now 10 years later he sleeps on my daughter Niamh's bed. They love each other lots. I dont think we could leave him behind. Thank god I dont have to make that choice. Please donate to help if you can. I already have. http://links.mkt4012.com/servlet/MailView

10.01.2022 Merry Christmas everyone. I hope all your christmas preparations are going well! It is the usual craziness. Just dont forget the stress relief. I had a most beautiful walk with my daughter and two dogs this evening. The light was golden and gently warm at the end of the day. It made such a difference. It is the longest day of the year tomorrow! How wonderful and how lucky we are. I have managed to make my Zucchini pickle to give as presents. This is one of the things I like most to do at this time of year - cook and make things. Not always possible. My house still needs cleaning - usually not top on the list. Enjoy your family and friends and all the precious time with them. Stress relief and friends are good for overactive bladder's even if alcohol is not! Stay safe and have a wonderful christmas, :)

08.01.2022 I just want to say a huge THANKYOU to the wonderful family, friends and colleagues that came to my official launch. It was so lovely to share a glass of champagne and chat with all those lovely people. I am again humbled by the number of compliments I have received. Including the ultimate one of being introduced to a colleagues mother and asked if I would mind seeing her. Of course! Mothers are precious, even more so as we get older. I found it hard not having mine ther...e who has poor health on-going and was not well enough to attend. In my teary moment earlier in the day I consoled myself with the fact that I knew Mum would be there in spirit with my beloved step-Dad (Allan) who was one of the most beautiful human beings to grace this earth. How blessed I am to have had these people around me. I was equally touched to come home today and find that another business near by had sent a message apologising for not being able to attend (they were teaching), welcoming me and wishing all the best! My hope is that everyone around me will 'flourish' as per my practice name. :) See more

03.01.2022 I have been overwhelmed by all the wonderful positive feeling coming my why this week. Thank you so much to my lovely friends and patients - present and past. I met with a well known obstetrician this week to tell him about my new venture. I have treated a number of his patients over the years in the public system. He was incredibly welcoming and asked me a few strategic questions about treatment for vulvodynia (a vulval pain condition). The first point I made was how imp...ortant it is to have a team approach. There a number of things a pelvic floor physiotherapist can do to help and we can make a big difference. These may include pelvic floor muscle relaxation, massage or trigger point techniques, daily relaxation, visualisation and breathing. Possibly laser or other electrotherapy techniques. Working with a Clinical Psychologist to enhance body image, relaxation or deal with past trauma, in conjunction with other medical treatments. None of these things should be stand alone treatment. Best practice is to incorporate a whole team including your medical specialist , psychologist, pelvic floor physiotherapist and complementary therapists (eg acupuncturist) as appropriate. The bottom line is that we are all individuals and respond to things differently. Over all it is a multi-level approach that has the best outcomes. If you know anyone with a pelvic pain condition or have one yourself, pelvicpain.org.au - The Pelvic Pain Foundation of Australia website is an excellent resource. See more
