I’ve written a series of children’s books called the ‘Beyond a Joke’ series. They focus on the importance of compassion and kindness and aim to stop aggression and bullying. I wrote these books because I wanted to leave a legacy and to build a safe haven for children. Children as young as eight have committed suicide due to being bullied, and I wanted to teach children to support each other and not be passive bystanders. The second book, Don’t Stare at My Underwear It’s Rude, is a gentle way of telling children not to let anyone touch them inappropriately, and to always tell their parent or a teacher if something like that happens. Many of the protagonists in my books have disabilities. Most of my books are lessons in how a bit of kindness can turn teasing around. They teach children not to laugh at other children. Suzie Strauss, for example, has a cochlear implant to help her learn how to speak and hear. She is teased by other animals. The book shows how people feel when others are unkind to them. In another book, Willamina Wombat has an eating disorder. That book came from my work as a childcare worker when I overheard a three-year-old saying they didn’t want to eat something because I’ll get fat. It teaches children about photoshopping and that things they see may not be real. These are important messages today about things that are happening for children. Hopefully, the books will stop children being mean to each other and create a more inclusive society. Sometimes, we just need some kindness and someone to hold out their hand. An example o...f the Beyond A Joke Series books....empowering children, promoting inclusion, supporting each other and not being passive bystanders if someone is being bullied. My goal and aim is building safe havens Australia wide for parents and their children. Bullying is Beyond A Joke targets our young children. My hope and dream is to leave a legacy for many decades to come. 21.01.2022 I had the pleasure of working with the students at Belrose Public School on their STEM projects and I was amazed as a Teachers aide the imagination and determination the students had to produce such amazing work.

Eddie the Emu was once a happy and outgoing little emu. But shortly after he started the new year at school, he became quiet and anxious. He didn’t want to go to school anymore. His best friend, Penny the Glamorous Peacock, cares about her friend very much. She convinces him to tell her why he’s so sad. She discovers he is being bullied by some other kids when he walks home from school. Penny encourages Eddie to tell his parents. Don’t Stare at my Underwear it’s Rude by Kate Pennington shows children that if someone is hurting them, the best option is to tell someone they trust. It urges children to be brave, despite feeling frightened, to put an end to the bullying.
