25.01.2022 We need to be very careful not to dismiss women who report abuse by "upstanding" men in society, just because we can't imagine they'd be capable of such acts. So often, men like this are masters of image management, who will label their accusers as "crazy" or "drama queens", should they dare come out and disclose abuse to mutual friends or colleagues. I believe that this is one of the greatest barriers to a victim's ability to heal... lt is good to see that a full picture of this person's behaviour has finally emerged.
25.01.2022 Two Queensland women murdered by intimate partners in the last week... How can this be happening in a civilised society?
24.01.2022 ***OPINION PIECE*** A huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders in the past 24 hours. Current DV laws, meant that for many years we were gagged from ever exposing this man for the animal that he really is. Sadly, we were discouraged by police at the time, from pressing assault charges (despite visible wounds), which would have seen the matter become criminal. We could have then named him/his charity without fear of being locked up ourselves...... But, this led us to establish our charity Beyond DV, with a vow that it would be operated with the utmost integrity, to help and serve others- namely women & children impacted by DFV- the way a charity should be. What needs to happen now... We believe that the ACNC must deregister his charity, something we have been wanting to see for a very long time We believe that the CIVIL NATURE OF DV LAWS must be reviewed, to stop men like this from creating a fake public life- hiding the monsters they really are, behind the veil of secrecy that current DVO's afford them as CIVIL, NOT CRIMINAL matters. We believe that the Government must introduce a REGISTER OF SERIAL DV OFFENDERS- how many of these women, including our loved one, could have been spared the trauma they endured & still continue to endure, had they been able to access information about his violent past? Through social media we had watched all of the women in this article become involved with this man, but we were powerless to warn them and they were powerless to access information about his history of violence. All we could do was pray that they were safe- and they weren't... ***Please let this be the starting point for the radical changes that are needed to protect women and children from monsters like this.*** We were determined that something positive would come out of our loved one's experience with this man, but we'd be lying if we said it hadn't taken it's toll on our family over the years. We hope that it doesn't take a politician, having to experience something like this themselves first hand, to do the right thing by the women & children of our community.
24.01.2022 THANK YOU Last week, I was notified that we had been inducted into the Inaugural State Government DV Honour Roll in two categories- as an organisation & as an individual. Those who know me well, know that our reasons for running Beyond DV are not focused on receiving accolades, but on doing what we can, in some small way, to make a difference to the lives of women & children impacted by DFV.... I must, however, acknowledge and thank those people who nominated us- I suspect it was a number of the women we support. It means a great deal to know how much you appreciate what we are trying to do. Thank you also to the State Government for officially acknowledging the work we do. To the incredible Beyond DV Team (Board Members, Staff, Volunteers) and to the beautiful families we work with- I see this as recognition of the caring, supportive, hope-filled community we have all created together. Thank you

24.01.2022 NEW PROGRAM- H4L HOMEWORK CLUB Last week, we moved a step closer to delivering our newest program, our "HOPE 4 Life Homework Club". This program has been developed, in partnership with the Griffith University Education Faculty, to meet the needs of children who are struggling at school due to the impact of trauma.... I had been asked many times by our mums, if I knew of people who would offer cheap/free tutoring to their children, to help them re-engage in learning and start to experience success again. As a former Griffith Uni Education student myself, I was certain that there would be Preservice Teachers who would be willing to volunteer their time to help our kids, while at the same time gaining valuable real-life experience themselves. And I was overwhelmed... We now have 14 Griffith University Preservice Teachers who have signed up for our six-week Pilot Program, starting next term. They will work for one hour each week, with 14 children from our HOPE 4 Life Program, helping them with homework tasks or other areas of need and becoming another positive person in their lives. On Wednesday, we ran an Information Session at our Centre for our Tutors, with Griffith University Lecturers Loraine and Tasha. We also had Vicky, Jen & Jane- Behaviour Specialist Teachers from the Education Department, take our Preservice Teachers through some very valuable training on Trauma Informed Teaching Practices. I was so impressed by the passion, enthusiasm and desire to make a difference, which was expressed by these fourteen Preservice Teachers at the end of our session. This is groundbreaking work which we anticipate being able to replicate in many locations in the future. Thank you to everyone who has committed to this program- potentially life changing for these children...
24.01.2022 If women were able to access information about a partner's history of violence, how many would be saved from the trauma of DV?? Finally this despicable man has been held to account for his behaviour. So very upsetting to know that this has affected multiple women, including a loved one.
24.01.2022 Final post on this topic... Kay, we are so very grateful for all the support you have given us over the years, and for helping to finally expose this "man" for who he really is. You have known about our situation and what led us to establish Beyond DV, since the first time I met you back in 2018. I have so greatly appreciated your advice and good counsel over this time.... No longer will we live in fear that this man will hurt another woman. The sense of helplessness is finally gone. I cannot fully explain how good that feels, after so many years... Now we can just focus on the charity, on supporting other women and children as they rebuild their lives after DFV and on advocating for stronger laws that keep women and children safe from DFV in the first place. Thank you for all that you do in the DV space- you are a true warrior and a force to be reckoned with. Through your words and actions, you change lives...
23.01.2022 We all agree that men can also be victims of domestic & family violence. Statistics continue to show however, that more violence is perpetrated by men towards both women and men. Sadly, yesterday's murder of a man by his daughter's partner is just one more example...
21.01.2022 I've seen this quote pop up on several Facebook pages in my newsfeed this morning and I love it!! Just over three years ago, on the flight home from a holiday in Queenstown, the urge to do something to help women I'd seen in the Courthouse through my loved one's DV proceedings became too great to ignore. I knew that so many women were also being impacted by DFV - surely we could do something to support them?... I started madly writing ideas down on the back of my airline ticket- by the time we arrived home in Brisbane, we had our DREAM. Over the next three months, that DREAM would become a GOAL, the goal then became a PLAN and in December 2017, the plan became a REALITY, with the registration of Beyond DV as a charity with the ACNC. Already as an organisation we have achieved far more than I could have ever imagined, sitting on that plane back from Queenstown. And there's still more to come, with two BIG PICTURE DREAMS we're currently working on and several smaller ones, which will see us being able to deliver new programs, to more women and children in more locations, as well as being able to provide additional support in other areas of recovery and awareness/education. This week we have another group of 15 women starting our Time Out Personal Development Workshops for DV Survivors. I cannot wait to run our Goal Setting session, with a wonderful new presenter, to help our ladies re-engage with their dreams and turn them into a reality...
21.01.2022 Giving each day your best, no matter what that may be... Enjoy your weekend!
21.01.2022 Today was a very, very good day. A person known to us, was convicted of domestic violence assault and sentenced, while we watched from the Public Gallery of the courtroom. No longer will he be able to hide behind his children's charity and his image of a "nice guy".... Thank you to the courageous lady who took him to court. Her Victim Impact Statement affected me greatly, as I knew it only too well. Thank you to all the other women who attended court today, all impacted by this man's abusive behaviour. We know there is more to come, we know so much more needs to be done to protect women from repeat abusers, but today was a step in the right direction...
20.01.2022 Great information in this clip about the signs of Coercive Control. Thank you to ABC journalist Rachel Riga, for the excellent coverage you are giving to raise awareness around this issue.
20.01.2022 Another recent post from one of the ladies in our Online Support Group. Absolutely love it!! Over the next couple of months we will welcome TWO new groups of DV survivors (30 women) into our "Time Out" Personal Development Workshops- the demand for this program is at an all-time high!... We look forward to introducing you to some fabulous new presenters who will be generously donating their time to help our ladies rediscover their strength, uniqueness, beauty and worth...
19.01.2022 WONDERFUL GLOBAL SUPPORT!! We recently welcomed Ross Vanderwolf, from the International Financial Planners organisation, Million Dollar Round Table, to a visit at Lillian's Place. We chatted with Ross and his daughter about our programs and they met a number of the women and children we support.... At the end of the meeting, we were blown away when Ross pledged to Beyond DV a $7000USD donation from the MDRT Foundation!!! This extremely generous donation will now be used on a small building project which will be commencing in the next month, to create an additional consulting space (for lawyers, counsellors and other visitors to meet with our clients), as well as a Cafe area, where we will offer Barista training (through our Pathways to HOPE Program) and sell coffee/tea/water/baked goods to park visitors, generating much-needed income for our charity. Thank you for this wonderful generosity Ross- we are so very grateful!!
17.01.2022 COMMUNITY SUPPORT We are always so grateful for the support we receive from our local community. Last week, we were presented with $1000 from The Lions Club Camp Hill/Carindale, which was raised through the recent sale of Lions Christmas Cakes. This wonderful donation will go towards our Time Out Personal Development Workshops for DV survivors. ... Thank you Marie, Jorge and all the Lions Club members See more
16.01.2022 Thank you Brisbane Lions!! We have received enormous support from the Lions since we established Beyond DV. They show great commitment to working in the community to end violence against women.... Great organisation, great culture
16.01.2022 A number of community issues are in the spotlight at the moment, including domestic and family violence. I think this quote captures the mood very well...
15.01.2022 Walk to HALT Domestic Violence Today we came together as a community to remember Hannah Clarke and her beautiful children and to offer our love and support to Lloyd & Sue Clarke and the whole Small Steps 4 Hannah team. With White Ribbon Day just gone for 2020 and with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gendered Violence starting this week, we must never let the significance of Hannah's Place be forgotten and we must vow as a community to continue fighting for the rights of... all women and children to be safe... Enormous thanks to Cr Lisa Atwood, Cr Fiona Cunningham, Small Steps 4 Hannah, White Ribbon Australia, Rotary Carindale, Snr Sgt David Beard PCYC Carindale, Beyond DV volunteers for working so hard to bring this event to life
15.01.2022 We are very grateful for the support we receive from our local representatives from all levels of government. Yesterday, in his speech to Parliament in Canberra, Federal Member Ross Vasta spoke of the work that Small Steps 4 Hannah and Beyond DV are doing to support victims of domestic and family violence in his local community. Thank you Ross, so greatly appreciated
14.01.2022 Very sad to hear of the passing today of women's rights activist Ruth Bader Ginsburg. If you're looking for an inspirational movie to watch this weekend, I can highly recommend "On the Basis of Sex", which tells the story of the powerful impact she made in a "man's world".
13.01.2022 RAISING AWARENESS... On Tuesday this week, Sue Clarke & I presented with Kelly-Ann Tansley from BDVS, in an online forum to almost 900 Queensland Government staff. Our focus was on Coercive Control- what it is and how it can look in relationships, based on our own experiences. We also looked at why criminalisation of this insidious behaviour is critical to ensuring the safety of women (recognising that some men will also experience this).... The feedback we have received has been extremely positive- education is key if we are going to change attitudes, behaviours and perceptions around Domestic Violence. Thank you Brenda Parker, Deputy Director General in the Qld Government, and Beyond DV Board Member, for giving us this incredible opportunity
13.01.2022 Very distressing to read the level of intimidation/control in this case... Hoping that lessons are learnt. We cannot allow these types of incidents to continue.
11.01.2022 COMMUNITY SUPPORT- THANK YOU We have just finished handing out Christmas groceries and gifts to our families at our Centre. Again, over the past few days, we have been overwhelmed by the support of our community.... Thank you to The Rotaract Brisbane River City team, for the boxes of Christmas goodies and pantry staples you dropped in The Mt Gravatt TAFE Team, for the children's gifts, clothing donations and gift cards you dropped in Cath Toomey, Joe Kelly and the whole Coorparoo community for raising just under $1000 for Beyond DV at the recent Christmas Carols event Anonymous community members, who have donated almost $1000 via our website in recent days To see the community spirit alive in such an incredible way is so heartwarming and means the world to us and our families. Thank you...
11.01.2022 Financial Abuse has impacted so many of the women we support. Sadly, it often continues after leaving an abusive relationship, as perpetrators take victims through protracted legal actions, refuse to pay child support etc. This is why providing the basics for our families- weekly groceries from Foodbank, donated home-cooked meals from the Christian Church and gift cards to buy petrol, is so critical and such a practical way to relieve some of their financial stress. And the l...adies are extremely grateful. Huge thanks to those community members who have supported us to meet these basic needs Repost White Ribbon Australia "Financial abuse is a form of domestic violence involving the use of money as a tool of power and control. It is estimated 90 per cent of all domestic violence cases involve some form of financial abuse" We call on all community members to walk alongside each other and work for change. Our Community Action Groups are groups of people coming together to prevent violence against women in their community. These groups will develop a community-led response to support change in their community Want to know more? http://ow.ly/614w50BxrYI
10.01.2022 "Intimate terrorism"... This is exactly what we need to be seeing and hearing- those who are in a position of authority within the legal system speaking out to advocate for the criminalization of coercive control... https://www.smh.com.au//intimate-terrorism-why-the-murders
09.01.2022 Those who know our personal experience with DV, would know why we are so passionate about this issue. If the coercive control elements of our loved one's case had been treated as a criminal offence, we believe that her repeat DV offender could have been exposed many years earlier and numerous other women may have been spared the trauma of his abuse. We need to get serious about making DV perpetrators accountable for their actions. The safety of women and children is far too important to ignore...
09.01.2022 HOPE 4 LIFE YOUTH PROGRAM It was so lovely to have a visit from our local Councillor Lisa Atwood today at our annual HOPE 4 Life Youth Camp. Lisa helped the kids collect wood for a campfire, bake damper and construct a tent in the bush.... We have 40 young people and 20 Mentors involved in our program this year. The positive stories that we are already hearing from the young people & their Mentors about their time at camp confirms our belief in the importance of building a strong sense of community with positive role models. Knowing that we have the support of community leaders like Lisa is so greatly appreciated!
07.01.2022 700 new beds for women fleeing DFV- very welcome news...
07.01.2022 I didn't think his bail would last very long- a menace to society...
06.01.2022 Kindness- costs nothing, but it's value is priceless. Thank you to the kind souls we interact with every day through our charity...
06.01.2022 A great article emphasising why more focus needs to be placed on supporting children who have been impacted by Domestic and Family Violence. Our HOPE 4 Life Youth Program aims to place strong role models and positive mentors into the lives of young people impacted by DFV. Creating a sense of community through connections with others helps them to realise that they are not alone... We look forward to welcoming 45 young people and 20 Mentors at our upcoming annual H4L Camp ... https://thesector.com.au//why-we-need-to-focus-more-on-th/

05.01.2022 This is a really good article by our White Ribbon Executive Director Brad Chilcott. I would highly recommend taking a few minutes to read.
05.01.2022 AMBASSADOR NEWS Congratulations to Brisbane Lions Vice Captain & Beyond DV Ambassador Harris Andrews, together with his team mates, on a fabulous win at the Gabba last night! Harris attended our HOPE 4 Life Youth Camp in 2019 to present medallions to our young people at our Awards Ceremony.... Obviously, due to COVID restrictions/the AFL Bubble, Harris was unable to attend our Award Ceremony at our Youth Camp yesterday. However, he sent along a fantastic video message, which we were able to play for our 40 young people, with a focus on working as a team, creating positive relationships and striving to achieve your dreams. This was greatly appreciated by us all and the kids got a real buzz out of watching Harris. We have a great relationship with the Brisbane Lions Football Club. A number of their players have attended our fundraising events and have also offered to be involved with our Youth Program- we look forward to this happening when restrictions are eased. Thank you Harris & all the best from the Beyond DV Team and our families for your Preliminary Final in two weeks.
05.01.2022 IF YOU'RE READY TO REBUILD YOUR LIFE Beyond DV is a Brisbane based organisation that supports women and children as they rebuild their lives after Domestic & Family Violence. We offer a wide range of unique Recovery Programs for women and children (trauma informed, strengths-based & evidence-based) that have been created by the Beyond DV Team and are delivered from our beautiful, welcoming Centre in Brisbane.... If you have been out of an abusive relationship for at least four months, and would like to talk to us about how we might be able to support you and your family, contact us on [email protected]. Beyond DV was proudly inducted into the Qld Government Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Honour Roll in 2020
04.01.2022 Horrific abuse! Hoping that the survivor and her children are able to rebuild their lives after such sickening acts. Domestic Violence does not discriminate!!
03.01.2022 LIFECYCLE WHITE RIBBON EVENT Yesterday we attended the Annual Lifecycle Cycling Club White Ribbon Event. It was an honour to be able to talk to the large group of cyclists & supporters in attendance, about White Ribbon and the recent survey results which revealed shocking statistics around Domestic Violence perceptions. It shows us that there's still so much work to be done.... It was also good to be able to give some real life examples of the positive impacts that Beyond DV programs are having on the lives of women and children as they recover from Domestic & Family Violence. Thank you Tim for organising another fabulous event. Thank you Lifecycle Cycling Club for supporting Beyond DV, through donation of proceeds from the day.
01.01.2022 It was an honour to present on White Ribbon Day, to the Department of Justice and the Attorney General. Now is the time to turn our conversations about DFV into actions...
