Dr Rachel Carson, a socio-legal researcher, Zoe Rathus, law academic and Caxtons Colette Bots will discuss what family law processes that truly provide for the best interests of children could look like and the important balance between enabling childrens participation and protecting their wellbeing. 18.01.2022 Right now the government is deciding the long-term level of support for the 1.6 million people currently without paid work and the millions more facing uncertain futures. Todays National Day of Action is your chance to send a clear message to our elected representatives that we cannot go back to the old Newstart rate of $40 per day that left people without enough to cover the basics like food, housing, and healthcare. By calling your local Member of Parliament and tagging ...them on Twitter you will make sure your voice is heard as these important decisions are being made. https://raisetherate.org.au/national-day-of-action/

16.01.2022 Have your say Review of 18 month retirement village buy-back laws. If you are living in a retirement village, you have probably heard about the 18 month buy-back laws that were introduced by Parliament a few years ago. These laws apply to residents who are exiting the retirement village (i.e. moving out and selling their unit).... In the past there was no legal limit on how long a unit could be up for sale - sometimes residents would have to wait years before they would receive any proceeds from the resale. Now, the 18 month buy-back laws mean that if your unit hasnt sold after 18 months, the village must buy it back from you (and pay out your exit entitlement). At present, the 18 month buy-back laws are being reviewed by an independent panel to consider how these laws have affected residents and village operators. Caxton Legal Centre encourages any residents, former residents or their family/friends to participate in this review process and ensure that seniors voices are being heard. The review will help the Queensland Government consider whether the 18 month buy-back laws should remain in place. Resident feedback will form an important contribution to this review process. If you, or anyone you know, is living in a retirement village or has previously experienced the retirement village exit process, you may wish to provide feedback. To do so, you can complete an online survey at the link below. https://www.hpw.qld.gov.au//independent-review-of-timefram Alternatively, submit your written experience or join a limited number of consultation sessions between early August and October 2020. To get involved please email [email protected] or call (07) 3233 3520. National Seniors Australia COTA Queensland Queensland Seniors U3A Brisbane

16.01.2022 Over-policing and over-incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continues despite a global movement calling for change. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to die in police custody, and in prison, at extraordinarily high rates. Caxton Legal Centre staff are acutely aware of the discrimination Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experience, including by police, through our human rights work. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders have long called for independent investigations into police misconduct. Reform is crucial if we are to see genuine change.

15.01.2022 Its Seniors Week. 14.01.2022 Financial abuse of an older person can include actions such as misusing or stealing their money or assets, pressuring them to change their will or transfer property, refusing to repay a loan and not allowing them to access their own money. It is one of the most common forms of elder abuse and is predicted to increase with the economic and employment stresses of the pandemic. Now is a time when we need to look out for each other, especially those who are most vulnerable. ... If youre concerned that an older person in your life is experiencing abuse, call Caxton Legal Centre on (07) 3214 6333 or the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 651 192 for confidential advice, support and referrals. We were also very fortunate to be gifted a painting! Thank you so much to the Elders, students, teachers and mentors who came to Caxton and shared their culture with us.

13.01.2022 The relationship between individual human rights and Covid-19 restrictions have been in the news again this week. 13.01.2022 Many government services and national, industrial-scale charities working with millions of Australians increasingly assume that digital access and literacy is universal, but it is still far from reality.

11.01.2022 Everyone knows that children do best when they are supported, nurtured and loved. But across Australia, children as young as 10 can be arrested by police, charged with an offence, brought before a court and locked away in a prison.
