25.01.2022 Locals learning the art of building fuel-efficient rocket stoves. These energy saving stoves cook faster, have less smoke emissions, retain heat, use 1/3 less fuel, are easy to use, safer, environmentally friendly and affordable. Sustainable Energy & Organic Farming Systems (SEOFS) run these FREE training sessions in local villages. ... All that is needed is mud (ant hill soil), water, grass and sections from a banana palm. It is estimated that by 2025 Africa will run out of firewood. In partnership with SEOFS and other local Agroforestry groups we are addressing the problem from both sides - increasing the trees in the landscape and reducing the amount of fuel required. There are many gains to be made. #partnerships #rocketstoves #fuelefficentstoves #africa #uganda #onestepatatime #lifechanging #agroforestry #wood #forabetterfuture

25.01.2022 Master TreeGrower training this week has been an amazing experience for the 60 participants. Today we covered tree measurement, fuel-efficient stoves, nurseries, fish farming, apiary and visited a very excited group of school students. Thanks to CIA Tax - Australia for their generous sponsorship of this event. #ciataxaustralia #sponsorship #shoutouttovolunteers #africatraining #mastertreegrowertraining

24.01.2022 We visited this school in Gokwe, Zimbabwe. As a result of the Master TreeGrower program in 2016, this school has planted over 2000 trees for fruit & timber. The children gave us a tour of their forest and were so excited! CIA Tax - Australia sponsored MTG training in 2016 and the results being overwhelming. We are looking forward to similar outcomes from the 2018 training CIA sponsored! #corporatesocialresponsibility #ciataxaustralia #sponsorships #investinginthefuture #worldchanger #csr #sproutprogram #schools

22.01.2022 A very special young lady doing our training. Her name is Blessing, she is 20 and lost both mum and dad when she was 7. She had been walking 10km each day to school on top of collecting firewood and water to look after her grandmother who she had been living with. My heart goes out to people like her. When we asked her what she wants to do when she finishes school she told us she wants to go to uni and do economics then try and work with orphans to help them have a better life. #whataninspiration #alwayslookontgebrightsideoflife #itallstartswithadream #whatalegend #payitforward

21.01.2022 #DidYouKnow? The highly climate- and biodiversity-friendly agricultural practice of agroforestry is now practiced widely around the world, but its roots are deeply indigenous.

19.01.2022 Some more photos from our recent Mbarara Master Tree Growers Program in Uganda earlier this year. Porta Timber sponsored this training as well as many others... without our amazing sponsors these programs would not be possible!

18.01.2022 Reminiscing...... Uganda

14.01.2022 For many of our friends and partners in Africa it has been tough going. Our latest May Newsletter highlights some of the impacts COVID-19 has had on them. http://www.beyondsubsistence.org.au/newsletters

13.01.2022 The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently expressed concern over the resurgence of Covid-19 infections in many African countries. Cases are on an upward trend in 14 countries and in the past week, cases rose by over 30% in eight countries. The WHO believes the arrival of cooler winter weather in southern Africa has increased the risk of infection. Uganda is the country of most concern recording a 131% week-on-week rise in cases with isolation centres and intensive care... units under strain. Lockdowns have recently been re-introduced. Zimbabwe also heads into another lockdown this week with daily infection rates recorded at around 600 per day and deaths at 26 per day. Angola, Namibia and DR Congo are also experiencing a significant resurgence in cases. Of great concern is the number of Covid-19 variants being detected in Africa. The UK (Alpha), South African (Beta) and Indian (Delta) variants are all active as well as a new variant recently identified in Nigeria. Their prominence, however, is unknown because very few African countries have access to the specialised genomic sequencing needed to detect these variants. The fatality rate has also become a major concern. Twenty-one African countries are recording death rates above the 2.2% global average. However, this may be due to the low number of tests being undertaken, pushing the average higher than the global figure. In some countries there is such a shortage of testing kits that patients need to pay a USD$50 fee to be tested. To date in Africa, the WHO has recorded over 5 million cases of Covid-19 and 134,000 deaths. However, the actual numbers are most certainly far higher than stated given the low testing rates and primitive health care systems in many of the poorer African countries. We remain deeply concerned for the Covid-19 situation in many developing nations. #pandemic #africa

12.01.2022 We have been supporting the Kabale Agroforestry Network to work with the Ikamiro community to secure the area that was so badly affected by a major landslide and floods in 2017. As you can see from the photos, Musiime Jimmy and the team at KAN have done a amazing job teaching the community how to raise their own seedlings and how to prepare trenches to plant and secure the hills. We are also so thankful to several wonderful donors who enabled us to buy seed, materials and gar...dening equipment to make all this happen! We visited this village and hiked to the top of the mountain which was 2200m above sea level, we got to see first hand the locals constructing trenches with the use of hand hoes which as you can imagine is extremely difficult. #togetherwecandothis #landslides #communityinvolvement #agroforestry #workingtogether

12.01.2022 In 2016 Beyond Subsistence delivered a Master TreeGrower program in Gokwe, Zimbabwe. This school was visited by the participants and a young plantation of eucalyptus trees were observed. After learning about managing and marketing the trees, the school opted to cut them down for poles about 18 months later. With over 1000 trees harvested, the proceeds from the sale were able to be used to add two new wings to the school. The trees are now re-shooting for another crop. Another wonderful success story! #zimbabwe #successstory #mastertreegrowertraining #knowledgeispower #harvesting #trees

10.01.2022 The New Year is here and we would love to share with you the latest news, inspiration and insights from Beyond Subsistence - in case you missed our December Newsletter.

08.01.2022 This was the final session of the recent Mbarara Master Tree Growers Program. We discussed issues of river management such as erosion, trampling by cattle, illegal sand mining, increased nutrient levels, weed invasion (water hyacinth) and siltation. This river flows into Lake Victoria, being part of the catchment of the worlds longest river, the Nile. A big thank you to Porta Timber for their on-going sponsorship and commitment, these training programs are creating a positive impact in people’s lives and landscapes. #portatimber #mastertreegrowertraining #impact #abetterfuture #investinginpeople

07.01.2022 The first three days of our Master TreeGrower program in Mbarara, Uganda have been a wonderful experience for the 50 participants. Lots of learning about growing & managing trees, citrus and grapes. The group has visited a number of local markets and even had a demonstration on how to build a fuel-efficient stove. The Master TreeGrower program is a life-changing experience for those participating. 03.01.2022 Next week Mbarara in south west Uganda will host this country’s 5th Master TreeGrower program. Why do we keep rolling out these programs in Uganda?? According to the World Bank, farming is the major income source for over 60% of the population. Improvements to the productivity and sustainability of these farms is having a profound affect on local communities and the environment. Thank-you to our major sponsor Porta Timber for their generous support of this important work and ...our Beyond Subsistence volunteers Craig and Trevor Meers for their time and efforts in delivering the training. . . . . . #uganda #mastertreegrower #sustainability #productivity #communities #sponsorship #environment #volunteers #training #corporatesocialresponsibility #portatimber #makingadifference #investinginthefuture #worldchanger #brighterfarming #agroforestry #lifechanging #impactingpeopleslives #allivatingpoverty #treesagram #investinourfuture #training #jobs #africa #trees #treefarming #support #farming #farmingforourfuture #timber See more
