25.01.2022 What do you think? Built-in bookshelf/toy storage from our place. This is a design Ben came up with for our place. It still needs a final coat of paint, the kickboards need painting and the piano needs it's rug under it to raise it, but we're pretty happy with it. The cubes are sized to fit some baskets from Ikea that we have (not pictured), and we found fabric boxes at Spotlight to put the toys in down the bottom. You can also see our wall-mounted Entertainment unit - I'll t...ry and get a good picture of that one soon. If you like this, give us a call and see what we can design for you! See more

23.01.2022 Yesterday's efforts, before and afters. We think this door is pretty darned cool! It's getting a couple of coats of tung oil finish today, and the frame is being painted, all in time for the big celebration this evening - Mullewa Railway Hotel's 100th birthday! Congrats to Demetri and the crew, and thanks for the opportunity to make this totally awesome door!

23.01.2022 Forgot to post this the other day - we finally put the finishing touches on the Cabin bed: some brass handles, and we installed the drawers with some heavy duty drawer runners. I reckon it looks pretty awesome painted!

22.01.2022 We're in there too!! Happy to be supporting this great resource for local people. Thanks Everything Geraldton ;)

20.01.2022 Some pretty sweet kitchen cabinet doors made from jarrah ply and Araucaria (hoop pine). These doors have been made to match the client's existing kitchen cabinet doors. I think I'm in love!! - R.

19.01.2022 We <3 doors. External, internal, french, multi-folds, venetian, even quirkier options like barn doors!! What's your favourite kind of door?

19.01.2022 Just received a shipment of jamb liners for some double hung windows... In other news, I HAVE A GIANT PIECE OF BUBBLE WRAP!!!! Small things ;)

19.01.2022 We've got this beautiful bespoke entrance door made from Merbau, Jarrah and Tuart drying in the clamps right now. Pretty pleased with it!

18.01.2022 Weve just finished this amazing* cubby house, manufactured and supplied as a flat pack kit, assembled and painted by volunteers at a local Kindy. *adjective supplied by one of the lucky recipients, age 4.

18.01.2022 Fancy architraves and skirtings can look really great... but what do you do if you need to replace a little bit (or a big bit!) and can't find your profile off the shelf? Give us a call! One of our services is copying and creating custom timber mouldings. We can help you track down a match for what you have, or find something similar, or even get new cutters made to match your profile exactly. We can also make solid timber mouldings from a range of timbers not available off the shelf.

18.01.2022 Jarrah ("eTread") single flight internal stairs with riser boards. Customer added their own handrail.

16.01.2022 Just finished installing timber balustrade.

16.01.2022 We've been making a lot of custom entrance doors lately. Your front door is like the smile on the face of your home or business. A special front door can set the tone of your building, and will be a statement piece people will notice and remember. If you want a unique and amazing front door, something more interesting than what you can buy at the shop, come and talk to us, and we will work with you to create something beautiful!

14.01.2022 101 years since the sinking of the Titanic. We've been watching a lot of documentaries about the Titanic lately, and in spite of the tragedy both of us continue to be struck by how beautiful everything about the Titanic was, especially the carpentry and joinery work. I've been pinning some pictures of the original Titanic, and some reproductions. This is one of my favourites - Titanic's first class Cafe Parisien. http://pinterest.com/pin/358317714073081342/

12.01.2022 Just finished installing timber balustrade.

12.01.2022 Ben had his scruff auctioned off to raise money for the leukaemia foundation at The Salvation Army, Geraldton. Raised $120 from a bunch of people who were curious to see what was underneath! Not the usual polished haircut he gets from Cut Throat Joe's Barbershop, but I reckon he looks alright ;) (Renae)

11.01.2022 Some of the staircases we have built over the last couple of years. We can supply or supply and install all sorts of staircases and external stairs.

11.01.2022 A lot of people love to get old things and make them look new again. A few crazy people (like me) love to take new things and make them look old. I'm even happier when I get to do it for a client! One of the most effective ways to make new timber look "old" is to use traditional-style products, like spirit-based wood stain, cream/wax polishes, or if you're really ambitious, french polishing (but you'd better be willing to work really hard for that one!). The quickest and easi...est way I've found for brand new timber is to use a diluted wood stain, apply thick, wait as long as you'd like (it gets darker with time) and then wipe off the excess. It brings out the grain in the timber, gets into the crevices and corners and ages the piece nicely. You can follow with a coat of oil, varnish or wax polish as you like. (The doors below will be getting a coat of Scandinavian Oil). One tip if you are staining a porous timber (like the Hoop Pine I was staining in the picture) is to use a sealer first. I used Feast Watson products from Bunnings for this project - Sanding Sealer to seal the grain which was then sanded off, and then Prooftint in Teak Brown diluted with Prooftint Colour Reducer in a special top secret formula ;) Wood stain is also a great way to "age" painted pieces. I like to use a diluted pine or teak stain, brushed on and then quickly wiped off (if it's a bit thick in places, you can use a bit of thinners on a rag to take a bit extra off in those spots). Combined with a bit of strategic sanding of the paint, you can achieve that "shabby vintage" look very easily! xxx Renae.

10.01.2022 Wall-mounted MDF TV/Entertainment Unit. As promised, here is our wall-mounted, toddler-proof (well mostly!) TV/Entertainment unit. Manufactured from MDF and awaiting its final coat of water-based enamel, this unit has been designed to hide cords for a neat appearance, keep our DVD collection organised, and keep everything out of the reach of our toddler. Ben is also going to make a cover for the Foxtel cords in the next few weeks. If you like this idea, we would love to help design and manufacture something to fit your needs!! (Please excuse the skirting boards - our floor is currently undergoing a rejuvenation!)

09.01.2022 Something to be aware of if your home has double cylinder deadlocks - either don't lock them when there are people inside, or make sure that the key is easily accessible. If you have kids in the house, leaving the key in the deadlock on the inside might be a good idea.

09.01.2022 A beautiful collaboration between Ben Farrington Carpentry and Joinery and Steele Campbell Building to create a stunner of a staircase in Merbau.

09.01.2022 Just received these pictures from a client of the new entrance way we built for her. What a gorgeous update, and I LOVE the Christmas decos! Thanks Natasha :)

08.01.2022 One of our favourite timbers to work with is the stunning wood of the Araucaria cunninghamii, also known as "Hoop Pine" or "Queensland Pine". Hoop Pine is a very high quality timber, with a fine, even textured grain. It ranges from a light creamy colour to a yellow brown. Hoop Pine takes stain and finish well and is a joy to work with. Hoop Pine is perfect for all internal joinery and stairs. Our Hoop Pine is sustainably sourced from plantations in Queensland. Interesting facts: Despite the similarity to true Pine, and having "Pine" in it's common names, Araucaria is a genus of evergreen conifer only distantly related to true Pines!

08.01.2022 New team member due to start March 4, 2014.

06.01.2022 An absolutely magical staircase with recycled Jarrah treads by Ben.

06.01.2022 Just did some minor cosmetic updates and added some more photos to our web page. Go check it out, share it with your friends :D http://www.bfcarpentry.com

06.01.2022 Ben has started doing kitchens again - beginning with ours! This is part of our new kitchen, and even without kickboards and not quite finished the painting, I think it looks pretty fantastic. I'm loving the Jarrah eBench tops - so easy to care for and very hardwearing. Ben has a gift for kitchen design - he's managed to fit more storage space in our tiny kitchen than in some I've seen that have two or three times the floor space. - Renae.

06.01.2022 Some pretty magic Vic Ash stairs Ben just finished. Simple but sophisticated. Love it!

06.01.2022 I couldn't help myself...

05.01.2022 The finished version of the Jarrah "fort" door we made for Mullewa Railway Hotel.

02.01.2022 We get a lot of clients bringing us pictures of things they saw on Pinterest that they would like re-created for their home or business. So I thought I'd join the craze, and post pictures of things I think are interesting! I started off with some pictures I took of doors and windows I found on my recent weekend in Perth and Fremantle. I know of a few pretty doors and windows in Geraldton I'd like to add too. Come follow us on Pinterest! http://pinterest.com/bfcarpentry/pins/

02.01.2022 We have almost finished this gorgeous built-in "cabin bed". It has cupboards above (with a ladder to reach them), drawers below, bookshelves at the foot and small shelves above the head. It is designed for an extra long single mattress. The client is getting it painted all in white for her very lucky little boy :) I think it's pretty cool, don't you?

02.01.2022 Replacing old timber treads (the bottom ones) on a metal-framed staircase with brand new Victorian Ash treads. The Wattyl Estapol 7008 finish on these was incredible!

01.01.2022 Some fence insert panels made from sustainable, plantation grown DesignPine products. The advantages of timber over metal for fencing is that timber doesn't rust or corrode, and all it needs to spruce it up every 5-10 years is a coat of paint - and it can be painted any colour you like! It also works out a lot more cost-effectively than metal, and is better for the environment (less energy required to produce and less carbon emissions from production). Another great option for fence panels is a product called SolaDeck screening. SolaDeck is another enviro-product that is made from highly compressed styrofoam. As a decking material and a fencing/screening material, it is maintenance free and looks very effective. The downside to SolaDeck is that you are limited in colour choice, but the available colours are very modern and on-trend.
