25.01.2022 Happy children enjoying the sunshine today. #yayforplay #childrenschoice #happychildren #getoutside

23.01.2022 Meet our staff Monday’s Hi, My name is Charlene. I am new to the childcare industry but I come into this with my Cert 3 in childcare, my Cert 4 in Education support, and I am also a beginners coach for gymnastics. I am also a mother to 2 children, so I know what it’s like to want what is best for your child/children as they begin their journey into the childcare setting. ... I believe that children should be provided with a safe and caring environment to give them the best start to their learning years. I also feel children learn best through play as they get to let their imagination run wild and do it their way, how they want, in their own time, and I will be there to help guide and support them along the way so they can achieve the things they would like, no matter how big or small it is, and help them find their feet along the way. I am excited to start my journey at Silverlea with my amazing coworkers and also the wonderful families and children we have. I cannot wait to continue to get to know you and your children personally and I am excited to be able to help them with their new journey to watch them learn and grow in this setting! So let the fun times and magic begin!

22.01.2022 We are very lucky to have a beautiful garden that attracts lots of birds and insects. To extend on some of the children’s emerging interests, Claudia provided the children with the opportunity to create some simple bird feeders with pipe cleaners and Cheerios. This experience brought on a lot of discussion and information sharing about why it is important to look after animals, what we think wild birds eat and how they help the environment. There was a sensory element to b...e enjoyed too with some of the children quality control testing the Cheerios first. #yayforplay #discovery #exploration #curiousminds #environmentalwarriors

20.01.2022 Today we ventured into the magical world of wizards and fairies. The children used their creativity and imagination to independently create their own wands with a variety of different resources. We had children and educators turned into frogs, dinosaurs and flies. I wonder if anyone knows a magic spell for tidying up the play space ... #yayforplay #magic #wands #abracadabra #childrenschoice

18.01.2022 What a beautiful day to be out in the fresh air! We witnessed lots of teamwork and collaboration. Our mixed age setting is providing the children with so many opportunities for social learning and development. Highlights from our day: Children working together to build a marble run. It was delightful to listen to the children share their thoughts and ideas, and evaluate and modify their designs based on what it was they were trying to achieve.... Children effectively negotiating and taking turns carting each other around the playground. Our preschool aged children solving the problem of some our younger children not yet being able to navigate the climbing wall. Children engaging with others through play based on common interests. Children assessing and managing their own risks while engaging with the environment - more on this later!! Stay tuned for another post. Children sharing their knowledge and understanding in a conversation about the magic of magnets. Children experimenting with everyday objects to explore sounds. #yayforplay #childrenschoice #getoutside #riskyplay #sociallearning #collaboration #mixedagesetting

I completed a cert 3 in early childhood education and care, and am currently studying my diploma in early childhood! ... 08.01.2022 Friendly reminder. This Thursday

08.01.2022 Children are 100% washable! We tried to beat the heat today with some spontaneous water play in the sand pit. The older children worked together to wash trucks and engaged in some imaginary play while incorporating dinosaurs into the water. Our babies enjoyed the opportunity to get wet and messy, happily splashing into buckets and small puddles of water created by the older children’s play adventures.... #yayforplay #beattheheat #waterplay #coolingoff #spontaneousactivites #exploration #discovery

06.01.2022 As promised, our risky play post! Apologies for the lengthiness. What is risky play? Risky play can be defined as a thrilling and exciting activity that involves a risk of physical injury, and play that provides opportunities for challenge, testing limits, exploring boundaries and learning about injury risk (Sandseter (2007; Little & Wyver, 2008).Feb 25, 2015)... It is often, understandably, a controversial topic. Why do we willingly provide and encourage such opportunities? Because when we look at things from a different perspective and assess not only the risks, but also the potential BENEFITS of such opportunities, we are able to give the children ownership of their own learning. Benefits of engaging in risky play: * Building resilience and persistence * Balance and coordination * Awareness of the capabilities and limits of their own bodies * The ability to assess and make judgement about risk * Handling tools safely and with purpose * Understanding consequence to action * Confidence and independence * Resourcefulness * Creativity and inventiveness * Curiosity and wonder * Problem solving What did risky play look like at Silverlea this week? Thursday was a standout. It was all about climbing and getting up high. Different ages engaged with the set up in the outdoor environment differently. Risky play for one of our youngest adventurers involved navigating the planks and frames - which she did quite efficiently with no input from educators. Risky play for Miss Five looked very different. She was able to manipulate the equipment to serve her purpose - first, helping some children with the climbing wall on the fixed equipment. And then after discovering the magic of magnets in their feet, seeing just how far up the shade sail supports she could get the ponies to stick. She hypothesised, she experimented, she tested, she evaluated, and she modified as necessary - all independently. There were moments where she sought some advice and guidance, but aside from offering some things to consider - ‘what might happen if the ladder falls?’, ‘I wonder how we can make sure it doesn’t?’ Miss Five developed and resourced her own learning experience through supervised risky play and was able to share her learning and pass on knowledge to her peers. Not content with letting their sister have all the climbing fun, and getting impatient with waiting for a turn at the ladder, our Master Fives improvised! #yayforplay #riskyplay #childrenarecapable #mixedagesetting #childrenschoice #whenbenefitsoutweightherisk
