19.01.2022 Leave No Trace (LNT) Principle 6 - Respect Wildlife "The stark truth is, if we want wild animals, we have to make sacrifices." ~ Colin Tudge, Wildlife Conservation... Encounters with wildlife inspire tall tales and long moments of wonder. Unfortunately, wildlife around the world faces threats from loss and fragmentation of habitat, invasive species, pollution, over-exploitation, poaching and disease. Protected lands offer a last refuge from some, but not all, of these problems. Consequently, wild animals and marine life need recreators who will promote their survival rather than add to the difficulties they already face. We know that animals respond to people in different ways. Some species adapt readily to humans in their domain, resume their normal behaviours and may have become "habituated." Other animals flee from humans, abandoning their young or critical habitat. Still others are attracted and endangered by human food and rubbish. Because outdoor recreation is dispersed over large areas and at all times of the year, its impacts on wildlife can be equally as disruptive. All species are to some extent, affected by people visiting their habitats. We are responsible for coexisting peacefully with wildlife.

19.01.2022 WHATS IT LIKE AT YOUR PLACE? Albany, Esperance, Denmark, Mount Barker, Hopetoun, Ravensthorpe and Walpole. *Winds up to 100km/h... *Possible thunderstorms and hail *Dangerous surf conditions Get ready now for severe weather in parts of the Great Southern If you live in South Coastal and South East Coastal districts you need to get ready now for the severe weather coming tonight. Locations which may be affected include Albany, Esperance, Denmark, Mount Barker, Hopetoun, Ravensthorpe and Walpole. This weather is not unusual for this time of year, but could damage homes and make travel dangerous. WHAT TO DO: DFES has these tips to help you and your family get ready now: Store or weigh down loose objects around your home like outdoor furniture that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds, causing damage or injury Ensure your emergency kit is complete including a battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit Ensure pets and animals are in a safe area Move vehicles under cover Boat owners should securely moor their boats Campers should find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephone if there is lightning. If you are away from home contact family or friends to prepare your property. WEATHER DETAILS: Bureau of Meteorology advised a deep low will move through the Southern Ocean during tonight and Sunday, bringing the potential for damaging winds about the south coastal districts. DAMAGING WINDS averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts to around 100 km/h are possible within the warning area and could cause DAMAGE TO HOMES AND PROPERTY. DAMAGING WINDS are expected to develop about the south coast between Walpole and Albany from around 5am WST and gradually extend eastwards through the Esperance coast during the day. DAMAGING SURF CONDITIONS which could cause BEACH EROSION are likely to develop on Sunday between Cape Naturaliste and Israelite Bay on Sunday morning. Showers across the warning area will generally produce light falls, although some areas near the coast between Walpole and Bremer Bay are likely to receive moderate rainfall. Thunderstorms and small hail are also possible throughout the warning area. Conditions should gradually ease from the west during Sunday afternoon and evening. ROAD CLOSURES AND CONDITIONS:

16.01.2022 Leave No Trace (LNT Principle 5 - Minimise Campfire Impacts "In gaining the lovely and the usable, we have given up the incomparable." ~ Wallace Stegner... Wildfire destroys thousands of kilometres of bush each year in Australia. Many of these fires are either carelessly or accidentally set by uninformed campers and travellers. Setting controlled fires is a practice and science of experienced land managers and Indigenous people, and is based on weather, sources of ignition, and fuel. The intent is to reduce the amount of fuel in the forest under-storey in order to decrease the chance of uncontrolled hot fires and regenerate growth. In contrast, large uncontrolled wildfires set unintentionally during hot, dry windy periods can spread rapidly and result in the critical loss of natural habitat, property and human life. Along with the destructive nature of fire, the natural appearance of many recreation areas has been compromised by the careless use of campfires and the demand for firewood. Campfires are beautiful by night. But the enormous rings of soot-scarred rocks overflowing with ashes, partly burned logs, food and rubbish are unsightly. Surrounding areas have been stripped of their natural beauty as every scrap of dry wood has been torched. Some of us grew up with the tradition of campfires. But they are no longer essential for comfort or food preparation.

06.01.2022 Leave No Trace (LNT( Principle 7 - Be Considerate Of Others "Supreme over all is silence." ~ John McPhee... "Silence is the element in which all great things are fashioned." Thomas Carlyle Today, we must consider the rights of traditional land owners as well as share the wilderness with people of all recreational persuasions. There is simply not enough country for every category of enthusiast to have exclusive use of land, wilderness, trails, bush, lakes, rivers, and campgrounds. Yet the subject of outdoor etiquette is often neglected. Were reluctant to examine our personal behaviours, least of all in the wilderness where, to many, a sense of freedom is paramount.

05.01.2022 It is great to report that around 500 trees and shrubs were recently planted at Blackwood Campsite just south of Balingup. The site has been very bare since a bushfire destroyed the surrounding pine plantation. The planting was undertaken by Parks and Wildlife Indigenous Trainees and National Park Rangers based in the Blackwood District.

04.01.2022 Today is RUOK Day. 2020 has had many hurdles and now more than ever, it is important to check in with those around you and ask the question. Sometimes its those that you least expect that are hurting the most. And to those who may not be coping, remember it aint weak to speak.

04.01.2022 WILLIAM BAY NATIONAL PARK IS OPEN The wait is over. The iconic William Bay National Park, including Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks, is open to the public! Tha...nks to a $4.4 million investment by the State Government, people will be able to enjoy newly sealed roads, carparks, toilet blocks and signage when visiting the popular park, allowing easier and safer access, and protecting the fragile coastal vegetation. Utmost care and attention to engineering and design has allowed provision for over 200 parking bays, more than doubling the parking capacity in the park. As one of the region’s tourism drawcards, the park’s diverse landscapes and turquoise waters attract more than 300,000 visits each year. Over the last few months, we have worked with local contractors, the Shire of Denmark and Great Southern Development Commission to deliver these much-needed improvements to the park. We would like to thank the community for their ongoing patience and support throughout this project.
